If This Keeps Up, Xbox One Has A Big PS4 Problem

Yes, it’s early. Too early for anyone to pop the champagne corks, declare victory and stand over the other guy with the scowl of a champion. But Microsoft MSFT -0.97% has a problem with the Xbox One in its war with the PS4 and it had better solve it soon or else it risks having a much smaller installed base, perhaps half the size by the holiday shopping season in 2014. As Paul Tassi wrote here in Forbes, Sony announced the sale of the 7 millionth PS4, which it turns out occurred two weeks ago. That led Microsoft to respond with a report of its own claiming 5 million Xbox Ones shipped to retailers. The careful observer has already caught the difference between sales and shipments, suggesting Microsoft’s number is soft.

But worse for the Redmond, Wash. software giant is the trend: Each month this year, Sony has sold nearly a million PS4s while Microsoft has barely shipped 400,000 Xbox Ones to retail. If we assume, perhaps generously, that Microsoft’s installed base is up to 4.5 million at this point and that the channel isn’t getting stuffed with unsold consoles (a trip to my local Costco suggests those Xboxes are literally piling up), Microsoft could have barely 8 million Xbox Ones in homes by year end.

Sony, by contrast, is on pace to double that total if things continue as they have so far in 2014. Certainly, things could change the equation, though Dave Thier notes that even with Titanfall, the Xbox couldn’t outsell the PS4 in March here in the U.S. Everyone seems to agree the biggest issue is the $100 price gap between the two systems, which is mostly a function of the decision to bundle the Kinect with Xbox One. But there is little doubt that ill will associated with the botched Xbox launch hasn’t helped matters much.

The question is when, whether and how Microsoft will react. It’s certainly not the case that the Xbox One launch numbers are a disaster overall. But if these tepid monthlies continue, they might seem like one a year from now. And there doesn’t seem to be any catalyst that will alter the equation short of either a price cut by Microsoft or, ironically, some slowing in the sales of PS4. There, perhaps Microsoft has some room to be encouraged. If you look at the chart, you can see a trendline for each console which closely matches the actual data points. While the Xbox line is getting awfully flat, Sony’s higher line is also beginning to crest.

Microsoft’s “problem” looks a lot less serious if the PS4 doesn’t run away from it with a much larger installed base too quickly. On the other hand, if it does, the question is when does it become too late for Microsoft. And there’s an issue of whether the company should even bother. While Xbox is a hugely popular product, it’s not an especially important profit center for Microsoft. Some have even speculated the gaming division has lost billions over the past decade. It’s easy to say, “Well, Microsoft should just trim $100 off the Xbox One and eat a billion in losses on the next 10 million consoles” but it’s not readily apparent new CEO Satya Nadella would see that as a good use of corporate cash (even though Microsoft has plenty).

Still, momentum has a way of snowballing. And right now, PS4 is not only outselling Xbox One, it seems to be outselling it by more and more as time passes. Microsoft will have to decide soon whether to do something about that or risk also-ran status.

that graph shows that xbone sold nearly a million units by nov 15,.. a full week before it was available at retail.

clearly, everything this guy says is bullshit if he missing that glaring of an oversight.

The first dot for the XBone begins on 11/21 (PS4s dot begins at 11/15). The Xbone line starts at the beginning only for trending purposes on the graph.

Fewer and fewer people want them because people want a GAME console that is powerful and satisfies their needs as gamers. There's so many other options for media hubs that are substantially cheaper, that paying out $500 + paywall after paywall for one becomes completely redundant. It's been said since the announcement of the XBone: The brand was built up as a console for core gamers. M$ pretty much just alienated their fan base by almost completely ignoring the games section and focusing almost entirely on gimmicks. The only way for the XBone to grow is if it becomes a game console. Beyond that, it's doomed to continue spiraling in the shadow of PS4. Thing is, the majority of consumers already know which system is the better choice, and that's unlikely to change anytime soon.

0331 Happiness is a belt-fed weapon

X1 needs way more exclusive games. I'm not sure even if they grow their first party in leagues if we can see any results by the time it's sales will be render such an effort irrelevant. Assuming they got 1000 developers today it would be Oct 2015 before we would see them.

After TF I can't help but think that most larger companies aren't gonna be going single platform for much longer in 8th gen home console development. They want to recoup those costs more effectively cause they are huge.

The major issue is in the coming months the whole supply issue should end for Sony in Europe and Microsoft lacks a major release to close the gap.

The four regions:

1. North America - This is still very much a battle and likely will be through 2014 and 2015.
2. Europe - The Sony domination here is well beyond what I expected and hard to see gap narrowing.
3. Japan - The PS4 may be struggling for 2014 here, but X1 will do little and by 2015 I expect support to pick up there.
4. Rest of the World - Sony advantage, but bit of a wild card with Brasil and potentially China mixing things up.

For 2014 it is hard to see anything but Sony gaining a strong lead. Microsoft's goal should be to keep it close or they really will be in trouble come 2015.

With the huge sales the Xbox One has got, $450 + Titanfall and Forza 5($400 one day due to an error at Amazon,) I'm thinking it's less about how much the Xbox One costs over the PS4 and that more people than we expect are aware of the difference in power. How many 720p/900p on Xbox One stories have popped up, 1080p for PS4 all pointing towards the fact that PS4 is more powerful.

Or it could be other things. Like how support for the 360 practically dropped off after three years, the value of PS+ over XBL, the increase in support of the PS3 to the end of the gen after the first few years, the large amount of Japanese exclusives if they're a fan of those games, or maybe some people purchasing systems their friends are getting and they switched to PS4 because of one of these reasons above.

The Xbox One is more then 60% ahead of the X360 during the same period.. This with being a MORE expensive device, and having to go HEAD to HEAD with another console release.. ( Xbox 360, Wii, and PS3 all released a YEAR apart).

I am sorry.. There is NO problem here... besides possibly the Wii U.. but even there I think Nintendo is fine, just won't hit Wii #'s.

Predictions on 12/01/15 - Generation 8 Totals:

PS4: 85-95m
X1: 55-65m
WiiU: 20-30m

What type of fitting is used for those curves? It doesn't look right. I'd like to see a graph like that for an entire generation PS3, 360 or whatever.

Another Xbox is doomed article *yawns*

Wake me up when PS4 has a worthwhile exclusive.
