I really can't help but respect and standards are disappearing fast in the Western world. Nothing is sacred anymore and it sucks. I'm glad Nintendo stay Japanese in their ethos.

There are jokes in good taste and jokes in bad taste. Lets imagine for a minute that Ubisoft comes out and says "We're all bored to tears working on the PS4, Assassin's Creed will now be and Xbox One Exclusive." That would also be too far.

It's funny how this attitude is only ever taken by people who weren't directly insulted. This isn't about offense, it's about respect. Not of Nintendo, but of gamers. Making "We've just finalised our engine for current system X, and it's incredibly well optimised" as an April Fools joke is beyond atrocious. It's the equivalent of, for instance, Microsoft announcing that they're launching the Xbox One in Japan tomorrow and it's coming with three games from major Japanese franchises bundled, at a low price. Such an announcement would not be an April Fools joke, it would be Microsoft making fun of Japanese gamers for a laugh. Frostbite weren't mocking the Wii U itself, nor were they mocking themselves, or Nintendo. They were mocking gamers who would dare to want the Frostbite engine, and games made using it, on their platform of choice. And going "maybe you shouldn't be on the internet, you're way too sensitive" is pretty much the equivalent of saying to the rape victim "maybe you shouldn't be walking through that area at night, you're too easy to rape", and letting the rapist off without criticism. Obviously, the rape analogy is an extreme version, and there's no equivalence between rape and mockery, but it's the easiest way to demonstrate the absurdity of the attitude - by taking it to its logical extreme. |
Really?? How is it any different that telling people to play SF2 on max difficulty, getting a perfect in every round, and beating Bison in less than 2 minutes in order to unlock Sheng Long? People wanted Sheng Long, just like people now may want Frostbite games on WiiU, but neither are actually possible. SF players were "made fun of for a laugh" for actually believing it, since it wasn't possible, but it's known as one of the best gaming April Fools' jokes ever. Turn around and joke (lamely, I add) about how something that isn't possible for the WiiU and all of a sudden, it's about respect and people being mocked? Yea....you are sensitive. And no, you're not comparable to a rape victim in any logical comparison (extreme or not). A rape victim has something done to them, against their will, and some people will victim blame (you shouldn't have walked around dressed like that, for example). But what was done to you against your will in which someone calling you sensitive is victim blaming? Nobody forced a WiiU on you, then laughed at you when certain games don't come to it and said "maybe you shouldn't have gotten a WiiU".
And don't say my analogy with the SF prank isnt applicable since it wasn't a developer that made the joke. EGM was still a business that's held to a standard and had costumers, same as EA.

Won't believe a word until he shows a Nintendo tattoo.

Exactly how would that be too far on April Fools day? You know they're joking so just laugh it off. People can make "Wii U sells tons of units!" Jokes every day but get sensitive when Frostbite makes a joke on the day you're meant to say jokes.

Hmm maybe my example was bad. The point is that you don't insult your own audience. You don't see Oprah Winfrey making fun of mothers on mother's day. It's in bad taste. Maybe if this was a news show then fine, make fun of us all you like, but not a game developer because that can be construed as a serious opinion. Not only that, but if it was just a news journalist it would probably be some trumped up story no one cares about, however a game developer can without a doubt poke fun at where it actually hurts.
Allow me to demonstrate why this particular joke was bad for EA. I personally believe that EA doesn't give a crap about the Wii U anymore. Their support as a third party publisher has gone out the window, I don't even know about any prior, current, or future EA titles for the Wii U. I believe at this point that EA has actually told its developers that the Wii U is never gonna happen for them and that may have even created an atmosphere where openly bashing the Wii U is acceptable at an EA development studio. All of this is just my own personal baseless conjecture about EA, but when an EA developer makes jokes like these, it suddenly doesn't sound so baseless anymore.

Three things, here: the claim that you can unlock Sheng Long didn't come from Capcom, it wasn't possible at the time to release add-ons to the game, and the Frostbite Engine is entirely possible on Wii U, given that the Wii U is stronger than the PS3 and 360, which the engine does run on.

Are you seriously saying this? The analogy is that you're blaming the people who bought Wii U's, rather than the company that made the tasteless joke. You're saying that, if people are offended, that's their problem, when all they did was buy a Wii U under the understanding that the company was going to be fully supporting the system (remember the "unprecedented partnership"? The thing where, until about 3 months after launch, they kept saying that they loved the Wii U and were going to support it fully?).

I'm sorry, but you have to be joking, right? You don't think there's a difference between EGM making an April Fools joke about an already-released game made by another company, in which you have to do something that is practically impossible in order to unlock the character, the effort going into which would involve the person playing the heck out of the game and probably enjoying it along the way, and a company that makes games saying "hey, we're releasing our games on this system. PSYCH!"
Surely you must see the difference between these two situations. And surely you must see the difference between the claim that a character is unlockable in a game and the claim that you're going to be supporting a gaming system that you said for about two years you'd support, before suddenly changing your mind after people had already bought it. Note that EA had supposedly had Frostbite attempt it a bit, some time in late 2011 or early 2012... but didn't bother telling anybody that they'd given up until mid-2013.
On the one hand, you have EGM mocking Capcom. On the other, you have Frostbite mocking gamers. Funny how some people try to make out as though these two situations are the same, or that Frostbite mocking gamers is actually a good thing.
Just admit it - you aren't saying "you're oversensitive" because of the situation, but because you think mocking Nintendo fans is fair game. In other words, you have more contempt for your fellow gamer than for companies that mock them.

If the joke had simply gone "We've just optimised our engine for Mario and Zelda", then nobody would have been the least bit bothered. What they said, when factoring in that it was an April Fools joke, was "Haha, you Wii U owners are so stupid, expecting us to support your system of choice."
That's not a joke, that's openly mocking a portion of the videogame community. And rather than the community pulling together and saying "that's not appropriate", a large portion of it has joined in the mockery, claiming that it's the Wii U owner's fault for being offended or upset. Quite simply, you are what's wrong with the gaming community at this point in time - the same sort of people who go "you shouldn't expect a perfect product immediately, there's always a few bugs" when EA releases SimCity in a completely unplayable state, or when they release Battlefield 4 with netcode so bad that the primary selling point of the game is almost impossible to play. When you place all of the blame on the consumer, on the gaming community, rather than the companies that have these sorts of attitudes, you are condoning the mistreatment, disrespect, and outright dishonesty that these companies peddle.
It's good that they saw their error, but the error is done. I hope the Wii U never gets another EA title.
