If the joke had simply gone "We've just optimised our engine for Mario and Zelda", then nobody would have been the least bit bothered. What they said, when factoring in that it was an April Fools joke, was "Haha, you Wii U owners are so stupid, expecting us to support your system of choice."

That's not a joke, that's openly mocking a portion of the videogame community. And rather than the community pulling together and saying "that's not appropriate", a large portion of it has joined in the mockery, claiming that it's the Wii U owner's fault for being offended or upset. Quite simply, you are what's wrong with the gaming community at this point in time - the same sort of people who go "you shouldn't expect a perfect product immediately, there's always a few bugs" when EA releases SimCity in a completely unplayable state, or when they release Battlefield 4 with netcode so bad that the primary selling point of the game is almost impossible to play. When you place all of the blame on the consumer, on the gaming community, rather than the companies that have these sorts of attitudes, you are condoning the mistreatment, disrespect, and outright dishonesty that these companies peddle.
