Forums - Gaming - Making KH 1.5 and 2.5 HD as exclusives makes no sense

Regarding your conclusions, I think it all depends on the dev and its expectations. I mean, Cavia's games sell like crap in my opinion, yet they still make exclusive 360 games because they seem to have a hardcore fanbase that makes them profit, no matter how small the sales or the japanese fanbase (they do tend to localize the games though).

that studio is already closed... T_T

FUCK.

I meant to save Cave -_-

And yeah, it's a tragedy that Cavia closed :(

Yeah, i really enjoyed bullet witch and Nier and i played those games without knowing that both are from the same studio for a while.

My guess is Sony paid for exclusive rights. It was still dumb of Square to make them PS3 exclusive since KH3 is on both consoles and releasing the HD remakes on 360 would have introduced the series to more people and help sell more copies of KH3 on XB1.

i agree.
idk if sony made them exclusives.
But nintendo and MS should pay for getting the game?...
i imagine they putting sora in smash bros to get the wii U port. With also a KH3D included in 2.5 version...

If the sales are just going to be 3:1 in PS3's favor in comparison to sales else where, there is just little necessity to put it on more consoles. SquareEnix screwed themselves up by trying to cater to 360 last gen, with every entry selling subpar, with only FFXIII making its money back for the development looking at sales. No need to make a PS4 version as PS4 will be able to play it with PS NOW feature by the time this comes out, and a PS4 version will add virtually nothing to it.

I would love it to be on Vita like FFX/X-2 tho.

That's because the SHMUP audience was on 360 at the start of gen. Cave has also just made a PS3 game and porting over some of the 360 titles.

Then what's the point? The risk?

Wat? I think its a game by game case of course. I am sure there will be more risk taking with some Xone JRPGS. Persona 5 might be a much bigger budget then Persona arena. (But who knows?)

Maybe you're right, but what's more risky financially? Puting Kingdom Hearts 3 on Xbox One, or puting Kingdom Hearts HD on 360? :P

Like a i said before Square Enix must be hoping that the Xone demographic will be "better" than 360's.Or Microsoft moneyhated Square Enix to broke a possible exclusive deal with sony.This would explain why the PS exclusive FF versus 13 becomes the multiplat FF15.

About KH1.5HD Square Enix probably didn't want to spent too much money on a HD port.So they thought "which is the best platform to release a jrpg?"

360 have a great install base but lack demographic+fanbase;

WiiU have demographic+fanbase but lacks of installbase;

PS3 have the best of both worlds!

Add this with the fact that two of the 3 "games" of the collection were PS2 exclusives and youhave your answer.

The strange part is that it's not on 360 since 3 is coming to the One. Not being on Wii/WiiU isn't that strange. I guess Sony has some sort of deal on the 2 main games.

The strange part is 3 coming to Xone.There is two possible reason for that:

1 - Square enix hopes that Xone demographic will be different than 360's(bigger japanese appeal,more j-softwares);

or

2 - MS opened the money flood-gate and money hated  Square enix to put KH3 on their console.

3. They're putting the games on Xbox One just because. They'll still get some additional sales. Consistency doesn't seem to matter to them since the remasters aren't on the 360.

It's more worthwhile for them to make new games multiplat than remasters I guess.

the problem with your "3" is that,like @wright said,KH3 will be a big budget AAA game,porting a game like that for a console that dont have the fanbase and (probably)the demographic is actually pretty risky(It's Square enix we are talking about! remember tomb raider?).add this with the fact that the Xone install base is(and probably will continue to be) smaller than PS4's and KH3 will sell 3:1(maybe 4:1).

Look MGS:GZ for example. It's a PS brand-related game made by japanese developers.It's selling(based on VGchartz) 3:1 and it's a SHOOTER(which usually is an xbox strong demographic genre).

I'm not saying KH3 will sell bad on Xone but Square enix(like any third party publisher/developer) have it's own projection.(again remember Tomb raider).And based on other JRPG and even other japanese games.It's very possible that Xone's will underperform.

Decision was made with assumption that X1 would dominate the NA market again. North America is the primary market for Kingdom Hearts by a landslide. The possible Japanese sales are pretty pointless as all that matters for KH is how well it does in the US.

Being an AAA game gives them more incentive to make it multiplat. Higher risk = higher likelihood for a game to be on more than one platofrm.

It was brought up earlier in the thread that risk was the reason why Gust games or whatever aren't multiplat, but the more likely reason is that sales would be so irrelevant (the games don't sell that much to begin with) that it's not worth taking the time to make a 360 version, ie. lack of a good opportunity cost.

Well you basically said what people are trying to explain to @wright!

KH1.5HD is low budget project likely most of the "HD ports"and let's faced HD port don't sell more than 1.5~2 million(i don't know if there actually is an HD port that crossed the 2m) so why bother porting a low budget game on platforms that will sell something like 300k life time.
