If that were true, then Nintendo would be buying new studios regularly to suck the life out of. Sadly, they can't even do that right. :/

Uhh... No. How many people are going to remember Mass Effect in 15 years? How about 30? |
well if they keep making them 15 years from now I don't get why people would forget about ass Effect, had Nintendo kill mario after the first 3 games barely anyone would be remembering it bra

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Well its not far off, really.
FIFA does 12-15 Million a Year on consoles at retail.
The Sims as a franchise had done over 150 Million, as of 2011. This doesnt include the mass popularity of it on Facebook, which has over a Million people playing per day.
Battlefield 3 sold over 16 Million units, Battlefield 4 is on its way to 10 Million.
Need for Speed as a franchise had done over 140 Million, as of 2009. Will be pushing 160 Million as a franchise now, probably more. Does ~5 Million per Year, or more.
| Mr Khan said: Or if those facebook likes couldn't be attributed to astroturfing or something equally nebulous Nintendo tends not to pull shit like that. |
Or if you actually had a legit counter, or proof. Sales and social media tell us that EA games are more than a match for Nintendo games in terms of popularity. Sales tell us that EA games are that popular. FIFA as a franchise is arguably bigger than anything Nintendo has.
Edit -

I missed that. Went for "Super Mario", thinking it would be under that name. The official tick of approval is on both.

Well, I find this to be nonsense. Mario yearly? Well, that's if you consider Mario Kart, 3D Mario, Mario Party, Mario & Luigi, Paper Mario, NSMB, etc to all be the same game.. Which they are not. same characters, true, but totally different games. Most of them are one per console which doesn't make them "yearly" at all. NSMB2 and NSMBU were released in the same year BUT we won't see NSMB series until next handheld or home console. This year we'll have Mario Kart 8 but MK9 won't arrive until... Next handheld. And so on.

I'm not saying "forgotten entirely", but EA is playing in a far different league when it comes to "social relevance" except for EA and FIFA. |
I'm not sure how you define social relevance but I think the series is still very fresh and popular. One of the biggest meltdowns in intenet history was a result of ME3's ending. If it can spark that sort of a reaction then I'm pretty sure the series will remain popular. As long as the games remain good then I think Mass Effect will be around for a while.
Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

Well you might have a point but overall Nintendo sold more than any other EA franchise. The Super Mario Bros franchise alone sold 262 Million. We can count Mario Kart too which is heading to 100 Million and Mario Sports (35 Million), Party (35 Million) and RPG (12 Million) and we say that the Mario franchise overall sold about 463 Million. All this taken from Wikipedia, the same source you use to take those numbers.
And that's just Mario. Pokemon is at 245 Million.
You might be right in saying that in the years 2010 to 2014 EA is currently selling more software. But overall it's not even close!

Hey, Im not doubting the longevity of Nintendo IP, its been ultra popular for Decades. Nothing rivals Nintendo IP when we look back through the history books... But we are talking about current popularity going into the future, arent we?

Well indeed, currently EA is more popular. That's why Nintendo is trying to be more like them!

I hate EA for killing most of my favorite PC development houses.
Nintendo hasn't done anything like that, so I certainly wouldn't consider them the new EA just yet.
Though I do disapprove of their DLC ventures, I have so far opted to just not purchase the games in question.
| Anfebious said: That's right, Nintendo is the new EA. Take some time... let your mind process it. It's quite a hard journey to acceptance but we can do this together guys. If you need evidence about what I am saying you just need to see the recent Nintendo news. Remember when Mario was not a yearly release? Well I do, Mario was a game that we waited with anxiety for years,It got us crazy! Nowadays we have one per year! Just like some EA franchises. Not only that but Nintendo is embracing DLC in their games, something that some years ago would have been considered heresy... And you know how EA is an evil company right? Well Nintendo isn't too far behind in evil practices... if you need proof, come and read this: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=178963&page=1# Even Maelstrom agrees with this and he already did an article about it, what further proof do you need guys? I know what you are all thinking now, you are all in the "denial" phase. Don't worry I'm already at phase 4... depression. It's a long road but you'll get where I am in no time. EDIT: I am posting the Maelstrom article for everyone to see. He makes some good points. http://seanmalstrom.wordpress.com/2014/03/02/nintendo-x-ea-or-why-nintendo-will-remain-lost-in-the-wilderness/ |
I think the real question is: where have you been? None of this is news. Nintendo has ALWAYS been like this. They've been milking Mario since the NES days, and we got multiple Mario games a year in the early 90s. From the release of the first Super Mario game in 1985, Nintendo released a new Mario game every year in America except for 1986, 1987 and 1993 (and in 1986 they released the real Super Mario Bros 2 which was released only in Japan). In the NES days they had an illegal monopoly over the gaming market thanks the policies that forced third parties to keep their games exclusive to their systems, which played a huge role in the NES's dominance in the 80s. As soon as this was ruled illegal in the courts and as soon as friendlier partners and better platforms came along in the two successive generations, third parties fled them like flies. From a brief skimming I can say those problems mentioned have been endemic to Nintendo for a long time.
When it comes to DLC, all Nintendo is doing is getting with the times, and they honestly do it a lot better then many other companies do in my opinion. They've yet to have a $5 horse armor incident.
So no, Nintendo is not the new EA. Nintendo is Nintendo, as it always has been. I guess you are just now waking up to the kind of company they have always been? I also think you are overexagerating things like "evil practices" big time. Nintendo is still a decent company. Just very old fashioned and archaic.
