Forums - Gaming - Take-Two shoots down idea of developing any Wii U games

I think if Nintendo wants to have success with older gamers and have the third parties that make those types of games take them seriously, they themselves have to make a flagship IP for that audience and prove that it can sell in the millions.

If Nintendo still had say James Bond or Perfect Dark and were selling 3-4 million copies of that every time out, they would have third parties like those that make games like Grand Theft Auto and BioShock wanting in on their platform.

All the pubs that make mascot/kids-centric games support the Wii U with things like Rayman and Sonic and LEGO and Skylanders because they see the sales Mario and Pokemon generate and that want in on the gravy train.

Demographics, Nintendo. It's not a conspiracy, it's just common sense.

Exactly why his response is stupid. Volume of consoles is nothing to do with it but demographics is. No one is denying that.

That said, we make these really big, AAA titles that work on some platforms, but not others." I think this was his attempt to vaguely address that. And if you know this to be true. Why complain? I see alot of people crying again but completly ignoring the demograph issue. There are still some people who cry about Wii not getting Bioshock or GTA4. Really? do people really think Wii was capable of running those game? And when i say run those games i mean RUN those games, not this Force Unleashed or Sonic Unleashed crap where they are two COMPLETLY different games that share the same name. To further prove my demograph thing, look at Bully sold half of the 360 version on Wii, HALF with a higher user base. Oh and BTW take 2 did support WIi, with Table Tennis games, because those were the games people WANTED to play on WIi, for those who didnt like them thats their problem, buy any of the other 3 platforms for those games you wanted.

Did anyone expect anything else ?

The Wii exploded out the door, with incredible sales compared to it´s nearest competitors

...but the support by Take-Two (Rochstar and 2K) was still sparse.

no it wasnt, they just didnt do the games you wanted to play

Honestly Take Two just didn't do many games that could've even worked on the Wii.

GTA IV/V - impossible
last gen GTA port - there isn't one on the other consoles either, so why a Wii port ?
Red Dead Redemption - impossible
L.A. Noire - impossible (3 discs on 360)
Borderlands - sandbox + online heavy = no chance
Bioshock 1+2 - big levels but could've been downgraded potentially (though Wii released too late for Bioshock 1)
Bioshock Infinite - UE3 so probably not.
Mafia 2 - sandbox, so unlikely

Rockstar Table Tennis - yep
some 2k sports games - yep
some shovelware - yep
last gen port of Bully - yep, perfect audience but only did half as much.

to be fair Bioshock 1 did come out later on PS3, but i agree with the rest.

Sony is publishing the Borderlands 2 port and The Walking Dead, so Sony (not 2K nor Telltale) hired devs to put those games on the Vita. Nintendo could hire devs like Sony, but they don't because they're Nintendo. As for the Wii situation, GTA IV, Red Dead, and Bioshock were not possible on the Wii due to the Unreal and Euphoria engines. They could of hired devs to make Wii ports with a custom engine like Activision did with COD, but due to the fact that the Bully Scholarship Edition and Manhunt 2 Wii ports didn't sell well, that's when they knew their audience wasn't on that console. NBA 2K sold well on the Wii, so they continued porting those games up until NBA 2K13

I'm not sure regarding Borderlands 2 on Vita, but it seems likely to me that, with Take Two having been the one to publish the original, they would have a say in porting. But I will accept that my knowledge of the details of the situation are limited.

I do, however, know more about the situation regarding Wii titles. You claim that Bully and Manhunt didn't sell well... the thing is, Bully sold about half a million copies, which is about half the amount sold on the Xbox 360. This cannot be described as "didn't sell well". If GTA were to have comparable performance, then you'd expect the Wii version to sell about 5 million copies. Manhunt 2 sold about as well on the Wii as on the PS2, so sales of that game can't really be attributed to the system, either.

And the claim that the Unreal engine wouldn't work on Wii was absurd from the beginning. Even Epic said it's possible, and that they just didn't feel the need to do it - if a company wanted to bring a huge franchise to the Wii using Unreal Engine 3, Epic wouldn't have refused to port it. But then, GTA IV was made on Rockstar's own engine, RAGE, which was also used for Rockstar's Table Tennis, for Wii. Euphoria works on iOS and Android, so it would also work on Wii.

By the way, Nintendo doesn't refuse to publish third-party titles at all. Consider Ninja Gaiden 3 and Sonic Lost World, for example. But it's not as simple as going to the company and going "we'd like to fund you to develop the game for our system" and immediately getting an agreement.

500,00 is a respectable number, but this is Rockstar we're talking about. GTA IV sold over 800,000 copies on PC, yet they never put Red Dead Redemption nor GTA V on PC. So it's not that they dislike Nintendo or PC, they just expect their games and ports to sell in the millions, same reason why they haven't continued on the Manhunt or Bully IP. Look at Max Payne 3, it sold over 3 million copies, yet they fired all the devs that worked on it at Rockstar Vancouver. Nintendo does publish some 3rd party games, but they're all Japanese. They used to publish some western games back in the day with Rare, Eternal Darkness, and Geist, but the only western game they have published recently is LEGO City Undercover

It is difficult to believe that grown people thinks all of these companies/3rd parties don t put their games on the Wii U for reasons other than business reasons-

I have a Wi U as our main (only home) console (also have 3DS). I very much want 3rd party support but understand why we are not getting it- Nintendo needs to step up and see that we get at least some of the quality 3rd party games since it obviously can t make enough games on it s own to compel enough people to buy the Wii-U.

Nintendo was insistent tat it would be different re the Wii U and 3fd party support but they have done nothing to attract and maintain it. So they are not able to make enough 1st party games and 3rd party has gone away hence extremely low Wii U hardware and software sales- not a big mystery. So those of us that own a Wii U will have fewer and fewer games to choose from going forward w little if any access to quality 3rd party games (after Watchdogs) .

What compelling reasons do people have to buy a Wii U today? There will be some that buy for specific games like Smash Bros and MK but even those are not going to be purchasing much additional software on the system-

If it only did half as much, then it wasn't perfect for the audience.

"¡Viva la Ñ!"

Well, at least one dev that is honest. Not the "WiiU cannot handle the game because of less power" or "If we release something for WiiU, it shoud utilize the gamepad right"-crap. This at least is honest:
Take-Two believes that Wii U just doesn't have the consumer base to warrant its attention right now. "Our strategy is to meet consumers where they are," Zelnick elaborated.

To all that claim missing Wii and 3DS-content. Well, Rockstar and TakeTwo aren't much into handheld games. They made Chinatown though, but it didn't sell well. Probably because their offerings are meant for home console. For Wii the statement still holds true: "Take-Two believes that Wii U just doesn't have the consumer base to warrant its attention right now." Do you think a GTA would have sold well on Wii? Consumer base doesn't just mean the basic numbers, but also the demographics. And he is right. GTA on WiiU would be bought by some for sure, but it wouldn't by far reach the numbers of PS3 and X360 version. I'm aware that these consumer-base will not be built, if they don't start it to cultivate with games. But I can't blame them. Such a thing is a risky and expensive work.

goodness A Ninty fan that gets it.

They should make a 3ds port of gta 5 then port that port into the wii U

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.
