This is the reason I dont like them.
Rather than creating their own stuff, they go around preventing the creations of other companies from appearing on other platforms.
They are a liability to the industry.

When Sony buys an exclusive or studio: "Yay! Another reason to buy Sony hardware! Developers love Sony!"

When MS buys an exclusive or studio: "BOOOO!!!! MS is ruining the industry with all their munnies! MAKE UR OWN GAEMS!!!!!"

Microsoft cannot create their own games. They have to buy them. Thats the only way they can fight back against Sony. It's also the reason I am now buying the Xbox One before the PS4. I'll play the PS4 a little later. Microsoft just solidified that Xbox One in my house first! Damn Microsoft! LOL! To me their two greatest franchises ever are the ones they purchased in Halo and Gears.

MS creates and buys IPs. That's no different than Sony. Sony bought Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, and Media Molecule after they created popular IPs.

I think the biggest difference is MS more often invests money in IPs they don't own. Sony on the other hand has lost support from developers because they didn't want to give their IP to Sony.

Their IPs are their own. They arent just buying up IP's like Microsoft.

Like I said, MS will invest money for studios creating IPs even if they don't own it. Sony on the other hand tends not to get involved with studios unless they own the IP and may eventually buy the studio.

Either way, BOTH COMPANIES have thrown money around to buy IPs and studios. Sony would probably buy more IPs if they actually had money. Instead Sony has been buys trying to save money.

Ultimately, Gears of War is a great purchase for MS. If Sony bought Gears... lets just say Sony fans would have been very happy.

The situation is far from equal dude. You're playing damage control. Theres no shame in it MS kind of needed this to keep their brand stable. I'm perfectly fine with it.

In regards to the OP, MS has the money buy IPs and create new IPs.

They do both.

Microsoft's answer to every problem lately has been to throw money at it. And when that fails they throw more money at it, then they keep throwing money until the problem goes away. It seems to be working for them.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

This is why I like Nintendo. They're the only one of the big three that is a developer. Nothing wrong with spending money to get IPs though, so long as you use them. I honestly wish Nintendo would get their hands on IPs more often, because I'd like to see what they'd do with them. Imagine if they'd gotten Atlus, and instead of Fire Emblem x Shin Megami Tensei being a cross-over with 3rd party, it was a totally 1st party deal. It would mean a more unified vision and a better game. Other M suffered from being developed by Team Ninja. Sony is a hardware company first and a software publisher second, but they take good care of their developers. Microsoft is...strange. They're a software company first, yet they aren't game designers. Games is a business to them. Even Bungie, the developer of their biggest IP, left them. It creates, for me, a serious crisis of brand identity with them. Their IPs, from the biggest to the smallest, are tied to them by money and laws. Their gaming division ends up specializing in neither hardware nor software as a result. Their strength is in their services and online ecosystem. Not a bad specialization at all, makes them very unique in the industry to be sure, but not something that will hold my interest personally as a gamer.

They do it because they can. I'm sure that other companies would love to have the opportunity to do the same, throw money at their problems.

Of course their IPS are their own because Sony looks to purchase the whole company to make all their IPs exclusive to their platform.  How this is any different or can be considerd as some move to promote creativity is well beyound my understanding.  Hell if any company can make this claim is probably only Nintendo.

So out of the 15 studios Sony had, they are down to 13.  Out of the 13 studios Sony owns today how many were bought and not inhouse

Evlolution Studio - bought

Guerilla Games - bought

Media Molecule - bought

Naught Dog - bought

SCE Bend Studio - bought

SCE Cambridge Studio - bought

SCE Studio Liverpool - bought

Sucker Punch - bought

Now lets see some of those studios that just could not get that extra motherly nurturing and were closed

Zipper - bought now closed

Big Big - bought now closed

incognito Entertainment - bought might as well be closed since no development is coming out of that studio.

So out of 15 studios, 10 of them were bought.  The reason I will always have a PS systtem is because Sony knows talent and purchase that talent.  To act like Sony is this nuturing company that doesn't look at the botton line and does not run their divisions like a business is really out there.

What do you expect a big coporation like MS to do.  In the last 2 years you have read about a lot of developer talent going to MS.  They have purchase exclusives for their console at a drop of a nickel.  They have also spent a lot of money increasing the size of their main studios.  The have also increase the size of their first party studios up to 21 now.

Now do not get me wrong, this does not make any of those studios good or even make MS first party studios better than Sony or Nintendo, it just means that they are spending the money to develop in house first party content which should be an indication that they are serious about their platform.
