why is it on Ninty to create new blue ocean games. Do people realize how HARD that is and how even harder it is to be successful? Not to mention the fickleness of the audience. Sony and MS seem to be doing fine by not making new blue ocean games. IF Ninty had to do anything is make new RED ocean ones IMHO

Sticker Star's problems can be largely blamed on the dev team. From what I gather, Miyamoto did not want Intelligent Systems to play it safe, and Intelligent Systems interpreted that as "don't make a RPG".

that is some funny miscomunication

That's funny stuff. Miyamoto is a "problem" that almost ANY other game company would love to have. And for that matter, so is Satoru Iwata (former developer of games like Kirby, Earthbound and Smash Bros.).

And any talk about Nintendo repeating their franchises too much, is both laughable and disingenuous, when you stop to consider yearly installments of Madden, of WWE, of CoD, of Assassin's Creed, etc. When you stop to consider Halo 5 is on the way, as is a new Infamous, and likely a new Gears of War, and let's not forget PS4 launching with Killzone, etc.

Nintendo puts out new IPs like Wonderful 101 that people ignore, while claiming they're waiting for the next Mario Kart or Smash Bros. or Zelda or Metroid. People claim they want "new and fresh" from Nintendo, yet with the exception of the success of the "casual" titles last gen, when they DO put out different stuff, fans often bitch and complain. When Nintendo tries new things with their old IPs, fans often bitch and complain, and say "Why can't it be more like Mario Galaxy or Ocarina of Time", etc. Yet then when Nintendo gives people more classic experiences, they turn right back around and bitch and complain about Nintendo "always doing the same thing.

Bottom line, Miyamoto is hardly a "problem", and people not only don't really know what they want, but they also love to complain, and NEED something to complain about, which is why you see so many Nintendoom threads popping up every single day, as if they were original in the slightest.

He's a genius game designer but he's not a great businessman/manager.

He should just stick to what he does well.

Wayne Gretzky was the greatest hockey player ever, but was mediocre as a hockey coach. Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player ever, but has been mediocre as a basketball owner/GM.

Just because you are great in one avenue doesn't mean you have what it takes in a completely different avenue.

Hiroshi Yamauchi didn't know the first thing about making games or even playing them (lol), but he knew business at least to a good extent, was ruthless, and also was smart enough to know when to delegate.

@OP:

Impossibru! We already know who's to blame for Ninty problems!

I don't think it's all Miyamoto or Iwata's fault but this article is VERY HELPFUL in getting people to realise that Miyamoto isn't a god and has presided over a reduction in the selling power of Nintendo's games.

However amazing you think 3D World is, it wasn't the game Nintendo needed it to be and many of the decisions that led to that are Miyamoto's.

Ditto. The problem with the Wii U thusfar hasn't been the games or even Nintendo's IP portfolio, but that Nintendo did a terrible job prioritizing them. Had the Wii U launched with Zelda U and X it would have a crushing lead.

Some of that's not Nintendo's fault, though. The new Zelda game has already had a huge development team working on it for years, and there's really very little Nintendo could have done to speed it up short of cut content. Cutting two years of content to make the launch would likely have ruined the game. The same is likely true with X. The console-selling titles just couldn't be made quickly.

Nintendo just got cornered this time. I still think they can manage second place in the generation overall if they stick to their guns, but their only way forward is certainly a tough one.

The thing is. Nintendo has been making these games for years. Nintendo knows how long a Zelda or Mario takes to make. They could of launched a Zelda game with the launch of the Wii U. They need a thing called planning ahead. If A Zelda takes 2.5 years for a fully polished game. A secondary team should of been working on it. While Skyward Sword was being made. This would of allowed a better launch state for the system. Miyamoto deals with a ton of games all happening at the same time. Having two Zelda's wouldn't be any different.

If Miyamoto ran a TV show. He'd end up getting his popular show cancelled. It takes 6 months to 1 year to do one half hour animated show. So when you see that Batman episode in 2013. People where animating it back in 2012. Along with multiple teams to do 4 episodes at once. This hits resonable release dates. And normal release flow for the shows season. It's not even more exspensive to the company. You're still allocating the resources the same way. But Nitendo is waiting for one team to finish one game. Rather then spend the cost of the game while the first one is being made. That is valuable time wasted to reach people.

Same goes for all their games. They could hit properly spaced released windows for their other franchises. If they did this. but they seem to not want to hire more people to do the work in a resonable time. They're basically the reverse of EA. EA throws games out as fast as possible. Not caring about length or bugs. But Nintendo will take 4 years to eleminate all bugs and make a good game. Nintendo even admitted doing HD is more work then they thought. Are you serious? No one at the company tested HD build times before it was needed? If I was Iwata. I would of had one of Wii's games done in HD. So I could see how long it took. This would benefit the company in research. And also give them a freebie reissue on Wii U. At a later date.

Smash was started when? A little bit before the reveal of Wii U? Why was it done this freaking late? Why wasn't a side team designing stages, thinking story ideas, roster list, moves ETC. Right after Brawl was completed. You don't need to have Sakurai free for all these things right at the start. He can come in later. While other people start deciding on the direction they want the game to go. Sakurai then gives the aproval.  You need to just start earlier. Both extreme sides are negative for consumers. The Wii U hardware was being built years in advance. Why can't Nintendo do the same for their games?

Gamefreak seems to be the solo company that actually does this with Pokemon. So we get good and complete releases for the games on set times. It probably helps that they also have to follow closely to the TV shows releases. Because they can't be waiting on Gamefreak in building the games story. And Nintendo recently released X/Y world wide. But couldn't do that for all the past games before? Becuase, they where too lazy to have a translation team work along side the JPN team building the games, till this point. They need to put the extra effort in for now one. Relying on 3rd parties is basically a lost cause at this point. Nintendo Needs to really think about their time on games. So they can fill in the huges gaps. Then try to deal with that 3rd party mess and consumer image.

Doubt they can manage that, im way more intrested in X1 exclusives then nintendo ones.  They sinply arent making games that appeal to a varied enough consumer base to take second.  Also X1 has NA to fall back on for sales, Wiiu will badly lose Japan to the PS4 its nonexistant in Europe and it can pretty much settle for third place in NA.

Partly true, but I expect both PS4 and X1 sales to drop off over the next quarter.  That's been the generation-wide trend thusfar. That, and sales are basically tied in NA for the moment. The PS4's price likely means that market will eventually go to Sony, too. The real problem with the X1 is that it's splitting most of its market base with the PS4 and losing on most fronts. Back in Gen 6 the PS2 managed to sell 150 million units because the original XBox didn't really split the market base. The split started happening for real with the 360.

If the PS4 has unified the market base again (with the exception of the MS and Nintendo hardcore, of course) then it will once again hit 150 million units, give or take. That puts the X1 in the 30-40 million unit range.

So to recap, I expect sales to slump soon, the Wii U is the cheapest console, and still has the lead despite a year of poor sales. It most definitely can manage second place. It's just difficult.

Blame for what? People keep talking about "who's to blame". The only problem Nintendo had in 2013, was not getting their goddamn games out in a timely fashion. That's pretty much it. So wherever the blame lies for THAT, sure. The Wii U itself, is fine, the controller is a great piece of tech and fun to use, the eShop is lining up with a LOT of great upcoming content. The retail games are on their way. Third party support needs to pick back up for sure, but the system is going to do well in 2014, just on the strength of the games coming out this year. The question is not "will Wii U do well in 2014", but rather, HOW well will it do? Will it see moderate success, or substantial success. That all depends on how Nintendo plays their hand, and them making sure they deliever a steady flow of games from now on. There isn't any "blame" to be laid anywhere, honestly. They just need to pick their shit up and get back up to speed. Period.

They have posted an operating loss for 3 straight years after never posting a loss in their history prior. The buck stops at Iwata, ultimately he has final say on all decisions at Nintendo.

Honestly I think they probably are on pace to post a loss again next fiscal year.

If Pokemon X/Y, Mario 3D World, Animal Crossing, 2DS + 3DS, Monster Hunter 4 royalties, Zelda: ALBW couldn't turn a profit for them I don't think this year's lineup is appreciably better for sales. It looks like the 3DS has peaked already for year-over-year sales so they are likely looking at lower 3DS sales next year.

The Wii U isn't fine, it's a disaster right now and a financial drain on Nintendo. No one but a very small minority care about that controller.
