Forums - Gaming - Do You Prefer Action RPG's or Turn Based RPG's?

With pretty much my only exceptions being Earthbound, and Pokemon X, I prefer action RPG's.

Reasons listed below:

-Less grinding

-Easier to understand and master

-No random encounters

-Combat is more satisfying and less tedious

-Your level doesn't hinder you as much as it would in a turn based RPG (ex. You're a level 4, but you have the best weapon in the game, so you still have a good chance of winning)

This is just my opinion. List yours below!

Your reasons are not working. Action RPGs can involve grinding, and turn based can be designed to not involve it. There are action RPGs that are hard to understand and master, and easy turn based RPGs. Turn based RPGs don't need to have random encounters and action RPGs can have them. The tedious combat-part is subjective anyways, and as many ways to implement combat in turn-based or in action RPGs I wouldn't generalize on that. And your level can have the same influence in action-based RPGS and in turn-based RGS. All your reason are a question of the design of the particular game, not so much inherent to the different gameplay-styles.

I personally prefer turn-based, while I also like a lot of action-RPGs. You have time to overthink your actions and this way it isn't that stressful. Also you usually can't control a whole party in action-RPGs. I usually prefer action-RPGs that are slow like Xenoblade Chronicles, where you have enough time to plan your actions.

Turn based RPGs all the way. However I like when they mix it up a bit. FFXIII, Resonance of Fate, Valkyrie Profile 2, Valkyria Chrinicles all have completely different turn based play but are still highly strategic and engaging.

Also I like grinding and random encounters and the fact that you can practically click away unwanted battles. In action RPGs you need your entire concentration for every battle which makes grinding or even progressing through weaker enemies a chore.

God forbid you need to stay focus during any fight. Lordy lordy lord.

If you fight hundreds of battles each of which lasts only a few seconds but you still need to keep up your skill and concentration and all that for minimal gain, Yes that is a chore and nowhere near fun. That's like working on a conveyor belt.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I enjoy both but if I had to choose I'd pick turned based over action based.

Action RPG: Xenoblade Chronicles
Turn RPG: Pokemon Series

Action RPG don't require that much attention or concentration during those mininal encounters. Just like I spammed the X button to grind on FFXIII, the same can be done for those easy enemies on an action RPG. Not to mention that action RPGs tend to be more forgiving in grinding/leveling (Mass Effect, Fallout, Kingdom hearts) It's contradicting my original quote but that's how a lot of Action RPGs operate.

And a few seconds of fighting rarely require concentration, unless its some sort of weird, insta death, scenario.
