I'm particularly looking forward to FFXHD

Old style FF gameplay is really missed by me. Last one we had really was FFX-2. (a) I was confortable going through an FF game knowing I wouldn't have to grind as it was mostly balanced, (b) I found special ways over time to make my characters even better when at first I was just making sure they survive, the random encounters gave the terrifying fear that maybe just maybe a Malboro will appear and you'd have to peg it and (d) at the start of the battle your characters were clean slate and you had to pimp them out, especially if it was a boss fight. In FFXII and FFXIII most of these things were missing.

I don't think I've ever played an RPG without being a bit over levelled so I've never played with that amount of fear.

FF XIII did have the long tactical battles in terms of bosses, the problem was that with that and XII you basically had to have your plans pre-set. I set up some gambits in XII and just played it without really changing in other than swapping in new abilities. Same with XIII, you had some plans set up then you do have a few ways to execute them which was good. I definitely enjoyed both games though

I'm now playing tons of XCOM. I don't really know why I like it so much, since it has lots of issues, but is definitely great fun

I now prefer action RPG. I used to love turn based but I grew tired of grinding and random encounters (mostly because of DDS2 and SMT3)

I like turn based the most. It's a lot more strategical and most of my favourite JRPG's are turn based games.

I like the Tales of series though.

I LOVE the Tales series but I prefer turn based...I miss the good old days of FFX or Xenosaga. If it is action based I prefer it to be like Tales or more like Legend of Dragoon even though that was not TECHNICALLY action based. I also love Legend of Legaia so I am pretty weird lol.

The absence of evidence is NOT the evidence of absence...

Action RPG's easily, I just find them more fun and involved than turn-based RPG's.

you people know that turn based doesnt necessarily mean random encounters right?
Atelier games are turn based but dont have random encounters.

It depends on the game. In an RPG, 90% of the fun depends on the Story and only 10% depends on gameplay for me... Without a story an RPG is just repetitive. I may favour turn based systems, but I really liked Kingdom Hearts....

I do not really like the western systems of RPGS with tons of loot. It feels so annoying when you pick up 100 weapons and none of them are better than the one you have already equipped (Borderlands)... In a JRPG, if you find a weapon in a treasure chest in a new dungeon, it is most certainly better than the one I have equipped.

Final Fantasy X had an almost perfect gameplay for me. You could exchange characters during the fight and therefore you could level your whole party at the same time.

I personally like both, but if I have to choose, I like turn based more.

Imo Paper Mario (1 and 2) is the absolute perfection of how you should do turn based RPGs. No random encounters, but it takes some level of skill to avoid some battles; almost no grinding at all (you can perfectly beat that game without ever doing any backtracking); with action commands battles never get boring; battles have plenty of strategy thanks to different skills and the use of badges.

Same with the Mario & Luigi series, although I feel those games don't have as much strategy as the Paper Mario games.

Nintendo and PC gamer

Well... considering my favourite rpgs are Kingdom Hearts and Dark Souls,I have to say that I like action rpgs more.Although I also like FF and Pokemon very much.

Neither; the good old isometric PC games had it right; hybrid solution with a pause button and complete control over every action and movement at your own pace and behest.

Final Fantasy used to have some really awesome turn-based combat and I also liked the real-time system in Final Fantasy XII, amazingly enough. Perhaps the best example of properly implemented turn-based combat is Temple of Elemental Evil though, it was damn near perfect and suited the D20 (D&D 3-3.5 Edition) rules much better.
