Forums - Gaming - Do You Prefer Action RPG's or Turn Based RPG's?

I enjoy both, but with any RPG my enjoyment of it boils down to one thing, the story. An RPG is nothing without a good story.

Admittedly I've only started playing RPGs recently but I like to have the choice. Currently playing Ni No Kuni and enjoying the action battles going on there but I'm completely open to turn-based

Star Wars: KOTOR was a great blend of the 2, though mechanically it worked like a turn-based game the ability to move around made it feel very real-time, I played it for a couple of years and never really noticed it was actually turn-based until I read about the battle system later on

turn based by a country mile

Turn based without doubt.

Slowing down the game allows the game designer to create a game which requires some level of tactical expertise in order to prosper.  The faster the combat, the more the game has to be dumbed down made more reaction based.

I like chess.  I treasure games that test my mental abilities, since they're a lot more rare than the twitch type.

I assume Kupomogli's comments on ESIV are concerning the potential imbalances later in the game. I always point out there was actually a difficulty slider if things got out of hand. I had the Wizard's Tower dlc (otherwise you had to join the Mage's Guild.) and found building weapons with enchantments like this was a big equalizer.

I was replying to each of the ops negatives about turn based.  He stated that action is easier to understand and master, and I used Oblivion as an example that there are action games that aren't so easy to understand and master.  Most peoples first time playing Oblivion they'll probably ruin their character by gaining several levels with little to no stat increases.  The game is a great game, better when you actually know what you're doing.  After playing Skyrim for around 20 hours, I think Oblivion is a far better game.

Action RPG all the way. Turn-based is antiquate system in my opinion. Nobody will stand there and let you wail on them just cause it's my turn. Although both require skills and strategy, I feel that action RPG give me unlimited control over my player.

If I am strong and skilled enough to take out my enemy without a single scratch, I should be allowed to, not get hit and waste resources due to a large group encounter or the sorts.

I am glad we are turning away from turn-based. Again, it's just not a proper way to fight. Sure, these are video games and fantasizes but that kind of thing break immersion for me. I will play RPGs with turn based combat but I enjoy action much much much more.

EDIT: Action RPGs require just as much strategy. Blocking, dodging, countering, positioning, and it involves such as many strategic decisions that have to be made in turn based like a specific weakness or buffs and debuffs.

Turn based RPGs all the way. However I like when they mix it up a bit. FFXIII, Resonance of Fate, Valkyrie Profile 2, Valkyria Chrinicles all have completely different turn based play but are still highly strategic and engaging.

Also I like grinding and random encounters and the fact that you can practically click away unwanted battles. In action RPGs you need your entire concentration for every battle which makes grinding or even progressing through weaker enemies a chore.

God forbid you need to stay focus during any fight. Lordy lordy lord.

I understood why you mentioned Oblivion and commented to avoid the slight chance someone might feel it was not worth trying at this late date.  No disrespect intended.  You're comments weren't overblown obviously.

If it weren't for the Dragonborn dlc I would still prefer ESIV by a mile as well.  With it they're pretty close for me.  I just really enjoyed the setting and it was great to hear a few snatches of the music from Morrowind.  If you still own Skyrim I hope you'll give it another chance.

With pretty much my only exceptions being Earthbound, and Pokemon X, I prefer action RPG's.

Reasons listed below:

-Less grinding

-Easier to understand and master

-No random encounters

-Combat is more satisfying and less tedious

-Your level doesn't hinder you as much as it would in a turn based RPG (ex. You're a level 4, but you have the best weapon in the game, so you still have a good chance of winning)

This is just my opinion. List yours below!

That is interesting.

-more grinding? Not necessarily. Look at Monster Hunter and the whole hunting ARPG genre. Insane ammounts of grinding!

-Easy to understand? Also subjective. If its well made, it will have a plethora of spells and combos. Kingdom Hearts for example. It can get pretty complex. Its not easy, its just that you can start by mashing buttons.

-Random encounters have been mostly removed from all JRPG's series. But again... look at Kingdom Hearts. It has random encounters aswell after you clear the level.

-combat more satisfying and less tedious? Subjective. A combat that makes me mash the buttons without hardly thinking, for example the combat in Tales of Graces, bores me tremendulously. Having some semblence of strategy is essential for enjoyment. Mashing buttong is repetitive and boring.

-Your level does not hinder you. Again this depends on the game. Most ARPG's are also level based and also hinder you if you dont level up.

My point is, you are beeing biased for some reason. I like both. Dont want to see any of them go away. But personally, i tend to like turn based when its well done (like Persona 3/4). This is because i love to strategize.

Action RPG's tend to steer into button mashing more often than i am confortable with. When they dont they are pretty good aswell though.
