Forums - Nintendo - Knack outsold Super Mario 3D World ... right ?

Eh... every game is promoted by its publisher, but there are different degrees of that.  For example, Call of Duty: Ghosts had tens of millions of dollars put into its marketing campaign.  Obviously it was more hyped by its publisher than a game like Inversion.

As for Knack, it had a pretty decent amount of hype.  It was, I believe, the first game showed off for the PS4.  Mark Cenry did a lot of interviews about it.  Being in every demo unit is a sort of hype (although Sony had little choice on that one as they couldn't put Killzone on the demo units).  It certainly had more hype and promotion than something like Puppeteer or Tearwaway.

At any rate, Knack's sales are decent for what it is.  It's sales are along the lines of other similarly promoted launch titles like Zombi U or so, and it has a decent shot of reaching 1 million if the PS4 maintains momentum.  Nothing wrong with its sales, but the comparison to Super Mario 3D World was stupid from the beginning.

It's doing better than it should due to being a launch title. The combination of a genre that is no longer relevant (Mascot platforming), being a mediocre game to begin with and being a non-graphical showcase pretty much make this game a dud out of the water.

It was used by Sony as promotional material because it was one of the 2 retail exclusive they had to showcase after Drive Club got canned for not being ready.

For hype to exist and not be just a dictionary definition, the promotional material has to generate positive word of mouth and press coverage.

It got neither and even previews which generally puts on the kid glove like IGN was running story that at best paints a neutral picture. The finishing blow was Cerney's own admission that the genre is no longer relevant and the game was second tier. The creator of the game was literally saying to the specialist press that he had low expectation and thinks most people who buys this game will do so as an afterthought after getting Killzone / CoD / BF4 / AC4.

This game will only reach 1 million if it becomes a bundle bait. It will be the first retail game to go to PS+ and will be forgotten within a year.

You pretty much explained the reason there yourself. The reason it is a well known title is because it is one of the two first party launch title. Had this come out on the PS3 it would get as much publicity as the recent Ratchet game (none).

Knack is a bad game in a genre that no longer holds much relevance in today's market unless your name is Mario. The title had flop written all over it.

New person, same argument. Just go read what I said to others.

As I said before, I simply expected better numbers for a 1st party launch title with a 1st party push. You people keep getting upset over that, its amazing.

Isn't it strange that all these different people are saying the same thing to you, but you are still ignoring it.

No one is getting upset, but more so laughing at your stubourness to not see why your argument is flawed.

I'm really not sure why people are spending so much time arguing whether the game was hyped or had hype or whatever.  If it makes you happy we can just say "the game was promoted relatively strongly by Sony" and be done with.

And yeah, it will be forgotten within a year.  That is the fate of most launch games.

mr puggsly already denied saying it was promoted rather then hyped. He is just flat out wfong and trying to bait people. Those type of responses tend to get attention. Hence, why people are spendimg time on it. Even if we talk about promotion from Sony mr pugsly is still incorrect considering Knack has no TV spot like he suggested. Did it recieve more promotion than Puppeteer? Yes. Killzone? Not even remotely close bjt he sure is making it sound like it

I never said it would reach 10m before the end of last year. But 1.1m sales worldwide has to be incorrect. We're talking 3 months worth of sales including Black Friday and Christmas. 1.1m..? Does anyone have any idea what the NPD figures are for October, November and December..? It should have done over a million in just the States alone during that time if you include Black Friday and Christmas sales.

I'm pretty sure when Nintendo give the sales at the next quarterly meeting that it's going to show more than 5m Wii Us sold. September 30th they sold 3.9m. Only 1.1m for the Quarter that has the busiest shopping days in the year makes absolutely no sense at all. :o/

Yes you did. No they dont. Yes... we are and BF numbers were awful for Nintendo as confirmed by Nintendo and NPD. For October they were 50k if I remember correctly and 230k for Nov. Dec isnt out yet.

Oops, my bad. I said between 10 and 15m when the Wii U first launched, but revised that to 7m after the software drought.

There should be an investor's meeting during these next few days I think so we'll find out how accurate VGC is then. I'm pretty sure that it's undertracked.

Its perfectly fine to have expectation, but honestly just how many game in the genre do well these days?

I'm gonna just stop you there, the rest of your post is a tangent.

I know mascot platformers aren't the most popular genre today. But I expected the push from Sony and being one of two 1st party launch titles to make sales stronger. Sometimes that's enough to make a game a hit.

I don't think people are ignoring Knack because of the genre, people are just really turned off to that game.

Well laugh it up, but I stand by my OP. God forbid someone have expectations that are a little higher.

Making an indie game : Dead of Day!

if you look at the latest sale Data there are 2 Wii U games in the top 10 in sales (Mario 3d world and new super mario bros). Actually if you look closely its the only next gen console to have any games in the top 10 in sales.

Both mario games above 300K

Not bad....

It's funny because if the Nintendo fans really wanted to be a bunch of rage inducing trolls then we would make a thread about SM3DW outselling Gran Turismo last week on an install base 1/16 the size. Or maybe a thread about how NSMBU has already outsold Killzone 2,Killzone 3,LBP2,Infamous 1+2, and Resistance 1-3.
