Forums - Nintendo - Why Nintendo's software can no longer carry their home consoles...

To state the obvious, yeah pretty much OP. Plus playing Nintendo games since the NES, nothing is making me go I have to have that system(WiiU)! Not like with past systems. And the numbers seem to back that up. Sometimes truth hurts.

I dont think the wiiu is the only problem besides the network look and feel of that being from 2001, the only thing it is missing is the dial up box. They really need to tighten it up and make accounts and games that tie to it, you know since we have had since 2005.

I see this as a Gamecube gen waiting to happen....when even Mario Kart Double Dash couldn't save it.

the gamecube had some great games though,   Eternal Darkness is still one of my Favorite games of all time.  IMO nintendo should drop the price of the wiiU to 100$ and drop the tablet as a included device, but this is my own opinion i dont like using the tablet to play games, its just big, its a cool idea but its just too damn big for me and my wife to use all the time, also it eats up batteries like theres no tomarrow.  seems to always need charging

No offence, but even if you hate the gamepad, you should be able to see this is a horrible idea. It would split the userbase. Support for the gamepad would drop due to it no longer being included with the console, leading to alienating earlier adopters. The console was designed from the start with low latency streaming to the gamepad in mind. It would be a complete waste of resources (both current manufacturing and previous research and development) to start producing gamepad-less consoles.

With the situation the Wii U is currently in: shifting momentum and confusion over the difference between the Wii and the Wii U, a modification on this scale would be disastrous.

The gamepad is a solid idea, even Microsoft and Sony think so, or they wouldn't be making their own versions. That said, you can use a wiimote or pro-controller if you want. There's an official extended life battery, and you can always play with the gamepad plugged in for longer sessions.

The best bet is to push out more quality games, try and win over more third party support, and get the awareness of the product out there.

see now if somewhere, anywhere on the box or at the stores someone told me i could use the pro remote instead of the gamepad i would have picked a WiiU up, the gamepad is just too big for tv use, also theres already confusion surround the WiiU, when i first saw it i thought it was a new version of the Wii not a whole new console, Nintendo should have never named it WiiU,  i get the idea of the Gamepad, i use my Vita currently to remote play and such.  but i just dont want to hold a tablet size controller the whole time i play a zelda game thats 40+ hours long.  if the Pro Remote will work for more then a second controller then i may pick up a WiiU.

I definitely agree about the name. Super Wii would have been perfect; it sounds better than a Wii and relates historically to the upgrade from the NES to Super NES.

the lost of some of thier 3rd party support has made the WiiU for alot a second console not thier primary.

is it really that different than the Wii/PS360/PC situation? at least for me Wii was my secondary

I think the OP makes a fundamentally flawed argument.

With the N64, Nintendo had little choice but to reimagine their franchises. The shift from 2D to 3D had a profound effect on gameplay. It really doesn't make sense to use re-invented franchises to make this argument, when the hardware is what dictates these changes, or allows them.

Besides, as we have seen time and time, and time, again, it isn't always necessary to completely change a franchise to keep it appealing, and that applies to Nintendo as well as anyone else. (see: Pokemon) It is necessary to change when the hardware warrants a change, or the franchise is in danger of losing its appeal.

Well millions disagree with you.  The Last Of Us, Demon's Souls, Killzone, InFamous, Resistance, MAG, MGS4, LBP,  Heavy Rain, and Uncharted are games I could not imagine going through last gen not playing.  Guess what?  8 of those were 100% new IP's.  There isn't Uncharted Party 3 or Killzone racing.  Nintendo isn't unchallenged in the games department...

Guess what, apart of heavy rain and TLOU, I couldn't imagine myself playing those fucking generic and boring games you mentioned. It would give me aids. You like them ? Ok, cool story bro.

Now the top 15 of most sold games of all time:

ALLLLL NINTENDO

Now the top 30:

All nintendo, minus 3 games from take two, 1 form microsoft and 1 by Sony and 1 by activision.

No one can match Nintendo son.

It's easy to have the highest selling games when there are so few.  Order of total software sold by Platform:

PS2

PS1

Wii

360

DS

PS3

Notice how even the juggernaught of the DS has had less software sold than the 360?   Also the 360 is close to overtaking the Wii, and the PS3 is on track to overtake both.  The PS3 just had too many exclusives release close to each other.  I didn't mind because I loved them all.  Oh and LOL at LBP and MAG being generic! I laughed pretty hard at that one...

So you like Nintendo.  Great!  But do you honestly think the Gamecube had better and fresher games than the N64, or the Wii the gamecube, etc...?

Bolded is one of the worst arguments I have ever read. It couldn't have to do with the quality of the games at all. Nope. The PS2 had a ton of games and two seperate GTA games managed to make it onto the top sellers list, how did that happen?

The PS3 released too many exclusives for them to sell greatly? So you're saying if TLOU, Demon's Souls and Killzone hadn't been released, the others would have skyrocketed up the all-time top-seller's list?

I don't know how you can say that the Wii didn't have a lot of fresh ideas for games, they were going crazy with motion controls, and hinged the success of the whole console on the premise. A few more games to add to the list:

N64:
Pokemon Snap

Gamecube:
Luigi's Mansion
Wind Waker
Metroid Prime
Super Mario Strikers
Donkey Konga
Battallion Wars
Eternal Dakness

Wii:
Wario Ware: Smooth Moves
Red Steel
Super Paper Mario (3D shift mechanic)
Xenoblade Chronicles(?)
Zack and Wiki
Trauma Centre
Rhythm Heaven Fever

Wii U:
Nintendoland
Game+Wario
Wonderful 101
New Super Luigi U (focus on speedrunning mixes up the game)
Zombi U (great immersion with the gamepad)

There's planty of innovaative software on each system, and the Wii U is too early in it's life to judge yet, but as long as we get more asymmetric gameplay a la Nintendoland, it'll be fine.

The Wii did have fresh ideas for games.  Did you look at the list?  I put practically as many as the gamecube.  Yeah the Wiimote was very innovative.  I just said it again.

As for the Wii U games you listed:  Here we go again listing rehashes and badly rated games as innovative.  Maybe they were to you, but they weren't innovative enough to everyone else.  To be on my list a game had to be 1) New or a complete evolution of a series, and 2) Highly praised.   I no doubt missed some games in every generation, but Zombie U is the farthest thing from that criteria I can think of.  A mediocre Zombie game is not new.

So Zombie U is as innovative now as Golden Eye was?  Really?

Also W101 got mediocre reviews and sold nearly nothing...

What does it matter if it got mediocre reviews and sold nearly nothing? Does it make the game LESS creative/new? No, no it doesn't. Just take a look at Tearaway and the Puppeter made by Sony. Got high praises, sure, but sold near to nothing. Or take a look at Knack for that matter. Mediocre scores, and will probably not sell all that well. The same goes for Ryse. Sure, they'll have some success, but I predict that SM3DW >> them both. Anyways, does that mean they're not new experiences? No! So don't try to belittle W101's creativity just because it's a Nintendo IP that's sold bad or got mediocre scores.

Getting Mediocre review and selling nothing does not earn it a classic rating in my book.  SOCOM 4 got similar scores and sold badly, and I wouldn't mention it as one of Sony's best.

Where did I say that this game is/will become a classic? I didn't even imply that.

At this point I just want to say that I am not saying Nintendo makes terrible games. They just haven't made almost anything new that is good for a long time.

Does anyone really disagree that over time Nintendo has come up with less and less new IP's, and that possibly it affected their sales?

This kinda ties in with what we were discussing, so I'm adressing it as well.

@Bolded, that is NOT what you said in the OP. Moving goal posts much? You simply stated that Nintendo is out of fresh and innovative ideas, or at least that those ideas have gotten fewer and fewer.

Man, you're so dellusional, I'll just stop talking with you. You don't even answer half the points I put forward. Why even bother. Let's be absolutely clear on this, though: the DS and the Wii (and the software to those consoles) are among the most ground breaking innovations this industry has seen - at the very least since the jump to 3D in the 5th generation. Who initiated that? Nintendo.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

.  A mediocre Zombie game is not new.

Mediocre to me is a game which design is still stuck in 10 years ago, with shinnier graphics.

HInt: The dudebro shooter you praise as innovative on your "next gen lol" console? yep, it's mediocre. And pretty trashy.

NOW, You see, Narbacular Drop (just google it) is deemed as a mediocre/average game that brings along a great mechanic: Portals. Yes. Then valve bought it and made... wait for it... PORTAL.

Can you see see the difference between a mediocre trash game (Killzone SF, Ryse, Knack) and a mediocre innovative game (W101, Wii Sports?)

If you can't, there is no hope for you, and from my experience in this forums, you gonna get ban-hammered soon with that behavior. You can expect a congratulations post from me in your wall when that happens :P

Holy shit this thread I don't even know where to start.

Why is the WiiU failing compared to the Wii? Most likely answer is that the Wii had a refreshing potential concept that could appeal to a wide set of demographics, which greatly inflated its sales. The WiiU on the other hand, despite the tablet gamepad being a newish concept (as apposed to the current widespread use of regular tablets), does not seem to appeal to the same wide set of gamers. Maybe when more games come out, that exhibit the same appeal that worked on the Wii (Wii Sports, Wii Fit, etc), and the WiiU price comes down, and enough Wiis get put in the closet, it will gain more traction. Many Wii gamers still play their Wii and are not interested in upgrading to the WiiU yet. The WiiU is simply not catering to its past audience, but attempted to target another specific demographic, which is not at all wooed.

Why might the PS4/XBONE be as successful if not more so than the prev gen? These new consoles are specifically catering to the gamers they already won. All they have to do is more of the same and do it better and they are almost guaranteed to keep pace.

There are many different types of gamers. Doing the exact same as done before can be a successful strategy. Doing new things, Wii, could lead to a major success, or WiiU, could lead to a failure (WiiU is not _yet_ a failure, but its not exactly a success yet either).

when was the last time nintendo introduced us to a brand New Character, not a rehashed character in a new setting? i honestly cant think of a new character in Nintendo's Stable, where with Sony you have Drake and the Infamous guy, who were introduced last gen. with MS you got the Master Chief and maybe others i dont know about(im not a xbox fan) but with nintendo it seems you see the same old guys, Mario, Luigi, Link, & DK

I mentioned this previosuly, but what is the difference between a new IP and using an existing character/world in a completely new way?

the difference is that the second option gives haters an excuse to pathetically say nintendo rehashes their games. but for them, it's totaly okay when other companies make the same games, slap a different character in it, and call it a new ip.

Hmmm:

NintendoLand - 77
Game + Wario - 61
Wonderful 101 - 78
New Super Luigi U - 77
ZombiU - 77

Except for Game+Wario, the games are all just shy of an 80, is that badly rated? I'm going to guess that you haven't played the first 2, to see the innovative uses of the gamepad. Wonderful 101 is a fresh IP. New Super Luigi U isn't 100% new, but it is a fresh way to play (speedrunning focused) and the first time Nintendo offered a full revamp of a Mario game as DLC. ZombiU is a true survival-horror, the game is highly polarising as most people (especially reviewers) expected a shoot-em-up, which is what we've come to expect of so-called survival-horror games like TLOU.

I love the bolded statement, try to shut down my argument as being anecdotal, but you can speak for everyone? Right.

Your crusade is pointless, if you don't want to like newer games, you're not going to.
