I don't understand this analogy. Why would game announcements and reveals let you down? If they let you down in terms of games I would completely understand, but why are reveals so important? |
Did I say that? And don't you mean a lack of game anouncements and reveals? But anyway ... I'm let down by Nintendo being out of touch (as the title of this thread points out). This is just another link in that chain in their pattern of behavior.
Also, unlike other people I was not keeping my hopes up for anything (though new revelas would have been nice). I'm more incensed about the methods they employed tonight. DK is going to be great, but that was not the place for it.
And to answer the latter part of your post (although it doesn't really realte to me), Nintendo have great games. That's established. Target audience, push, marketing and communication in general are important, and to me, they seem to be at fault here. Their games need to be channeled with these things in mind. Nintendo needs to capture mindshare of gamers beyond their fanbase. They're losing that battle. I'm disappointed in what I perceive to be consistent self sabbotage - not simply revelas or a lack of them in one award show.
Playstation = The Beast from the East

Sony + Nintendo = WIN! PS3 + PSV + PS4 + Wii U + 3DS

Really?

I honestly think the game looks great, but choosing to reveal it to the VGX audience over something that would have fit the demographics better is a bit.. odd. I'd say a new Smash trailer would probably have done more good than Donkey Kong.

The way you make an announcement won't have any impact on how well a game will sell. Today Nintendo showed Cranky Kong on the VGX, to an audience very different from what the game caters to, but tomorrow, we see a huge marketing campaign for DKC: Tropical Freeze, and it sells amazingly well thanks to that marketing. My point is that how you reveal a game, level, character or whatever won't have any impact on how the game is or how much it will sell.
Similar to what happened to 3D World, the game got destroyed by people on gaming forums, they however love it now.
What Nintendo did today won't matter much at all in the long run, in both sales and quality of the game, hence why I'm asking why it is so important how you do a game reveal.
This talk about Nintendo out of touch is true for many things, but not today's reveal. Nintendo's problem go waay beyond what happened today, in fact, Cranky Kong is the number 2 trend on Twitter right now, I think they accomplished their goal.

He had a pin of Metroid during the the DKC showcase. Hence why people believe he hinted at a new Metroid game. He also almost spill the beans.

I can't be bothered to care. The show was awful this year. If Nintendo had actually cared, they would have been the only ones.
Not sure why Donkey Kong is a bad game to show compared to Double Fine's game. Game Trailers obviously thought their audience cared a lot about Donkey Kong, since they spent like 10 minutes talking about that arcade game competition.

Yeah, I really like him. There's a lot of Nintendo fans on YT, who love to make excuses and damage control, but he's straight with his audience. Plus, I like seeing people be critical of Nintendo. He also has a great speaking voice and looks like Will Smith.

I mostly disagree, the main thing about Nintendo is that they are completely different, it's what makes them interesting
On the other hand, I didn't find that game interesting at all. Just not in the slightest
But who are they targeting? Wii owners or HD console owners? Because they are very different markets. They don't seem to be doing very much to appear to HD owners and things like Donkey Kong only really appeal to their very core Nintendo fanbase
