Does that mean the PS2 was a fad, because its successor fared worse??

The PS2's marketshare was cut in half by Microsoft with the Xbox 360. The years head start and third party exodus served Microsoft well. Between the PS3 and 360 they essentially have the PS2's sales. They are more stable to the market because they attract actual gamers outside of their core audience. Their audience was sustainable, just dragged along in a tug of war between the two companies. Nintendo is another story...the market is going to shrink considerable because of Nintendo creating a market that doesn't actually care for gaming.

The Wii lasted a normal console lifespan. A fad would have fizzled out in 2009.

It started to fizzle out in 2009.

The Wii has sold 43 million units since 2009. Fizzled out my arse.

It started to fizzle out in the Summer of 2009.  It did get the first 2D Mario game on a console since the NES era which allowed it to have decent Christmas numbers, but really PS3 has been gaining on it since the first $299 model was released.

Sorry, but selling more than the lifetime sales of most consoles (and more than half PS3 or 360 sales to date) after that point isn't fizzling out.

I know the "hardcore" as desperate to try to rewrite hsitory to exclude the Wii, but reality disagrees.

The reality is that Xbox 360 has already outsold Wii in America and the PS3 is going to outsell Wii in Japan and Europe and with future price cuts probably worldwide.  Fads don't have that longevity.

Neither do consoles, in 95% of cases. It's not that the Wii's lifespan is abnormally short, it's that PS3/360's are abnormally long.

Actually guy, this is how you "tell it how it is..."

You obviously do not own a Wii U, Jason Rubin or OP of this thread, or you would know everything
you just said is nonsensical garbage. eShop, MiiVerse, Hulu, Amazon, YouTube,
Netflix, NintendoTVii, PLEX in 1080p HD, AWESOME Internet Browser, Miis, Wii U Video Chat in HD, etc. and our online is 100% FREE and do you have any idea how ridiculously cheap Nintendo's DLC is? I even watch my Detroit Lions win on SUNDAYS now THANKS TO NINTENDOTVII. You can doodle on the f'ng screen even, they have live polls and trivia with other fans, MiiVerse conversations and a map of the football field on the GAMEPAD!!! Even LIVE stats from ALL of the other games!!!

Out of 27 games that I own for Wii U, 20 of them are 3rd party and rated M for mature. EDIT: Sorry, Only 18 of my games are rated M. I didn't realize that Injustice: Gods Among Us and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 were rated T for teen.

Practically every single game has online except for sniper v2 and
batman origins, for some reason, the developers lazily left out the
online for no apparent reason, though the games did cost less.

I also have seven, yes SEVEN different control schemes: Wiimote,
Wiimote/Nunchuk, GamePad, Pro Controller (with an 80-hour battery life, might I add,) Classic Contoller, Classic Controller Pro and Mayflash Gamecube Adapter using my WIRELESS WAVEBIRD. You guys will be lucky to even have TWO on the other consoles. There is also speculation that the 3DS may be able to be used in the future for the Wii U.

It is because of uneducated, misinformed fools such as yourself, Jason Rubin (and others at DICE, EPIC, CRYTEK (all LIARS,) etc who all said that the Wii U was too underpowered to even run their engines which ended up being absolute LIES and destroyed the Wii U's reputation and potential at ever being taken seriously by the gaming community OUTSIDE of Nintendo Hardcores,) that the Wii U is bashed on by "hardcore" 12-20 year olds and the rest of the "mainstream" media and sheep.

By the way, my Wii U is also 100% backwards compatible with ALL WII peripherals and games and homebrew still works like a CHARM! What's that? All my Virtual Console and WiiWare was also transferable? And saves? Gee golly!

Show me even ONE XB1 or PS4 that does these things and I will buy those consoles! Enjoy your new advertisement/spying machines whose "exclusives" will in some cases also be on PC! And after seven years, let me know how that extra $420 you just lost to paying yearly Live and PSN fees feels. I'll go spend my extra $420 on some ACTUAL 420 and a few more Wii U games... Good day to be a Nintendo fan...

Yeah your console is amazing and yet no one is buying it. Ps4 will probably out sell it worldwide in less than 4 months.

A "fad" is generally thought of as a successful formula that's not repeatable after a certain time period.

The Wii had a monstrous 2006-2010, but the Backstreet Boys had several no.1 albums too, not just 1 hit record. Today they have a niche audience of hardcore groupies and that's about it.

The Wii had its time, and its time is over. Whether you want to call that a fad or whatever is just arguing semantics.

That applies to every successful console ever.

The difference being the "formula" for the Playstation 2 (which really just aped the formula from the SNES mixed with Genesis style marketing) still works today.

The Wii formula does not, ergo, one is seen as a fad while the other is not (a core gaming console with lots of third party games and an emphasis on software aimed at male teenagers/college students sold at a relatively affordable price).

Actually in comparison to these, Wii's life was abnormally short.

Atari 2600 6 Years
NES available 20 years
Genesis 10 Years
Playstation One 12 years
Playstation Two 12 years

Wii is still available today, so in those terms it's at 7 years and counting.

Genesis, PS1, and PS2 were all six years from release to replacement; just like the Wii.

These kind of threads are utterly retarded.

People's logic: SM3DW comes out. Doesn't sell 3 billion copies in a single day = it's a flop. Completely dismissing the very well known fact that games from those franchises are known to have outstanding legs.

Yeah, the Wii U isn't selling like it should. But it's still only a year old. Content is coming out. People and the media are talking about SM3DW, praising it left and right. It's the first extremely good release for the system (based on its universal acclaim both by the media and gamers who play it). All it takes for a system to sell is to have games worth the purchase. Mario Kart 8 is coming, the new Zelda will be shown soon, X is coming.

Sure, the Wii U won't get to the top of the gen sales wise, but I suspect it will be the second console for most gamers out there. It's too soon to tell if it will pick up or not. But counting it out this early is utterly retarded. In fact, I'd say those who count it out openly like the OP does are nothing more than attention whores and trolls. There, I said it.
