Forums - Gaming - With the PS4 out and X1 nearly, can we say clearly Wii U's power failed to live up to next gen claims?

Wii U is closer to PS4/Xbone than Wii was to PS3/360. We were right about that.

I disagree completely.

As seen by most DF Face-offs, Wii U performs worse on average than most X360 games when Wii performed better (at almost everytime) than PS2 games.

So on paper Wii is a bit between PS2 and X360 generation wise when Wii u is at best exactly at X360 levels.

Wii u is one generation apart from X1/PS4 when Wii is at 2/3 a generation apart from X360. Wii is closer to X360 than Wii U is from PS4/X1.

I am talking of course (as the OP intended) strictly technically speaking. Wii U have already lots of great games (and will have more) that never will release on PS4/X1.

Wii U's difficulty with multplats is because the games in question are built on nearly a decade of optimization for PS3/360 but not for Wii U, and said ports are pretty much all low priority rushjobs by C teams.

Wii and 360 were separated by two fundamental barriers; HD, and programmable shaders. No such disparities exist between Wii U and PS4/Xbone, just a power difference.

But Wii multiplat were better than on PS2 even without optimizing the game for Wii. Do you think Wii multiplats developers tried to optimize their game on Wii? I don't remember so, quite worse than with Wii U games in my memory.

But there is more than power. Memory also. Wii u has 5 times less memory available than next gen. And about the Gpu you may be right but don't ignore the difference between 0.160 Tflops and 1.2Tflops for X1 (with better tech). At last the CPU on Wii-U is too different than the jaguars and no doubt weaker than X360, forever preventing any direct X1/PS4 ports. Don't you see most developers now target for all next gen games X64 64bit 6 cores for CPU minimum, this target now routinely translated on PC version (COD)?

So overall, Wii u has different barriers from X1/PS4 than Wii from X360, you are right here, but those barriers are nonetheless as much (or more) uncrosseable (5 times less memory, around 10 times less flops power if you average X1/PS4 gpu power, CPU separated by 10 years old tech gulf).

Wii was easier for devs to handle out of the gate because it had the same architecture as the Gamecube; with Wii U, it's unfamiliar hardware.

With PS4/Xbone, there just aren't any paradigm shifts in how graphics are done this time around, like HD and programmable shaders, which separated Wii from PS3/360.

The law of diminishing returns is also in effect.

As for CPUS, even PS4/Xbone's CPUs are not a big leap over PS3/360. Cervat Yerli of Crytek was quoted as saying that "the CPU performance is better than last-gen but not by a huge margin."

I won't argue more with you about graphics because I love my Nintendo games and they are my favorites games out there.

The most important are the games, always the games. Why do I even discuss with you about graphics when this last year I've enjoyed most of my gaming time with my loving 3DS, a level tech PS2 gaming machine? I will by the Wii U, soon, and sure enjoy the usual Nintendo games on it.

But I try to keep objective and not blinded by my bias toward Nintendo games as you may have noticed I have been disappointed by recent Nintendo aggravated stubbornness about their hardwares.

Not going to say power doesn't matter because it's a big reason to move to next gen. I will however say that just like I don't care about the gap between PC -----> PS4 or the gap between PS4 ----> Xbox One I don't care about the gap between PS/BOX -----> Wii U.

Nintendo with their strong first party support deserve to be a main player in this generation. They need to build their online considerably, redesign and rename the Wii U like they did with the 2DS (lol), and adapt by creating some more bro friend oriented games. I'm not saying they should make only CoD, but expanding their talent and adding some freshness to their powerful software would be nice.

Project cars is the game that only has next gen versions.

Also, Wii U doesn't get more next gen multiplats because it is a Nintendo console, and because it is a Nintendo console. Also, NIntendo makes it.

Wii U is to the PS4, the same as the 3DS is to the Vita in terms of performance. Nice difference in paper, not so much in visual fidelity.

power isnt the problem. the problem is the lack of will(and time and money) to make these games optimized to wii U. If they do that, it can accept any next-gen game.

and exclusive wii u titles crush the ps360. now, do you have any point whatsoever or just the unoptimized ports?
