Forums - Sales - Nintendo 3DS vs PS Vita Sales

Whats the point of playing any game on a handheld? You're actually making it quite clear the only reason you bother with 3DS is because there aren't better versions of the games on Wii U. So actually, 3DS isn't a preference, you're just putting up with it because you're being denied the games via other superior outlets.

I've played handheld games all my life^

On my GBC, on my GBA, on my DS,on my PsP, on my 3DS.

I like HANDHELD games. I really dont want to play console games on my handheld unless they're better on the handheld. Its why I play MH3U on my 3DS/WiiU and why I prefer playing RE:R on my 3DS and its why I play PS1 games on my Vita :

Because i want to go out and bring my games along with me. If i go on a trip with my girlfriend to another state i don't want to pack a long a ps3/360/wii u along with me, just bring a small case and my 3ds/vita with me. And are you seriously telling me a game like pokemon would work on a home console? if you're honestly telling me this i would go as far as to say that you haven't played any good handheld games, because trust me, there are some that just will not  be anywhere near as good on a home console .

I wonder if the lifetime Vita sales will ever reach at least half the sales the PSP had...

But all those 3DS games are just console games that aren't available on a home console. Especially the likes of Luigi's Mansion 2 and Mario Kart 7. RE:R is now available on home consoles, as is Mirror of Fate. This is where this argument about whether a game is a handheld game or a home console game gets completely lost on me.

A game is a game.

I like the Vita for providing me with near current generation quality (technically) titles in the palm of my hand, meaning I can enjoy that on my commute to and from work etc. I like the 3DS for the games I can't play on another format, however given the option, normally I'd opt for another format if it was an option.

That said, Mirror of Fate, I tried on PS3 the other day, eugh... that nice low res screen really does hide a multitude of sins.

As for racing games, Ridge Racer was great on 3DS. Though 60fps without the 3D effect would have been preferable, more in keeping with the PSP games. I don't know what Namco were thinking with the Vita release.

No they are not, from a game design perspective they arent at all. Kid Icarus Uprising's level style and set up is tailored for a handheld, it can translate well to a console with tweaking but its very much a HANDHELD experience.

If I wanted to play a Kid Icarus game on a console I'd like it to be like Starfox Adventures.

Whether a game is on a console or a handheld is irrelevant. Its about how its design is tailored and how its meant to be experienced. Handheld games in this manner feel vastly different from console games. Graphics arent the only difference.  IF a dev wants to port his game to a console just to make a little extra money ( indies do this alot) then yeah sure, but it doesnt really feel different.

If Atlus wanted to make a Etrian Oddysey game for the WiiU I'd be all for that , infact it'd be freaking awesome, but its interface and design would obviously be different from how they are on handhelds.

I have no qualms with handheld games at all. I prefer them to home console games purely for being able to take them anywhere and everywhere (my wife currently lives in another country so yes, having my games available to just put in my pocket and play anywhere is a blessing!)

That said, why wouldn't a game like pokemon work on a home console? There's a reason Nintendo allowed you to use the Transfer Pak to play Pokemon on your N64 :p it may have features that lend themselves to handheld gaming, but the games themselves would be just as good on a home console. Personally I think cross-play is the perfect solution to such as this. Best of both worlds.

Actually, it's set up to not require 2 analogue sticks. Compensating for a design choice Nintendo made with the 3DS. Developers work with what they have got.

There is no such thing as a "handheld experience". Some games may be better suited to portable gaming than others, but a game is a game regardless of it's platform.

But you only need to look at the number of people who cite Starfox 3D and Ocarina of Time 3D as great handheld experiences to see that this is true. Actually they're just home console experiences from 15 years ago which Nintendo's handheld hardware has only just got to the point where it can run it.

Handheld games are designed to be played in shorter amounts of time, so they tend to be more densely packed and more straight forward to tackle. For instance like with Kid Icarus's pot design for tackling a level, then you quickly play through the level and then move on to the next( due to hardware mainly but this has evolved into a style)

Thats where the whoe "save your game anywhere" thing came from.
As a designer this is quite clear to me.

Oh my mistake, i thought it was just a in general statement.

It's hard to describe why i think pokemon doesn't work nearly as well on consoles then handhelds. When i played pokemon colliseum and XD there was something that just never felt anywhere near as good as a handheld pokemon. With the streetpass feature i just meet a lot of random people and maybe sometimes trade/battle. I think one of the best thigns is that when i'm at my college, i just get that green light to appear on my 3DS telling me that someone is nearby that i could interact with. In my opinion, if you were on something like the wii u and just interacting with someone using wi-fi battle/trading, it would not be near as good just finding someone at random in person and battle/trading with them.
