Handheld games are designed to be played in shorter amounts of time, so they tend to be more densely packed and more straight forward to tackle. For instance like with Kid Icarus's pot design for tackling a level, then you quickly play through the level and then move on to the next( due to hardware mainly but this has evolved into a style)

Thats where the whoe "save your game anywhere" thing came from.
As a designer this is quite clear to me.
