N64 did pretty well in America no doubt, though to be fair to the GameCube, it probably had easier competetion ... a bumbling Sega and Sony was still a newcomer for the first couple of years.

The GCN had to face a much more established Playstation brand and Microsoft had much more money to throw around than Sega did. Though the GameCube had its own issues too.

While I never wish Nintendo ill, it does seem like them having challenges means rewarding gamers with incentives to buy. This bundle for $300 is the strongest push I've seen to really move systems.

This is why I don't want anybody to dominate the field. When they have to compete for our money, we win!

I'm telling you guys, this holiday will be the Wii U's time to shine. With a lower price, new bundles, and a decent selection of games under its belt (including and especially SM3DW, due in just one more month), I think it will finally start to rebound in a big way. The PS4 and XBO will be brand new, and while they'll do well their first few weeks on the market, because early adopters are typically few in number I doubt either system will be able to individually best a system that's going into its second holiday (plus the PS4 and XBO aren't coming out in Japan until February, which could reduce the PS4's potential numbers by as much as 500k, though considering how poorly Xbox does over there it might reduce the system's holiday sales numbers by no more than 100k). It may be all too brief, as I expect the PS4 to take the #1 spot next holiday, but this could very well be the Wii U's one chance to be the king of the eighth-gen hill. That's not to say the Wii U will drop off a cliff again after the holidays. I think with all the gains it will have made this holiday, it should be able to retain some solid momentum in the new year this time and get some further boosts from huge titles like DKC, MK8, and SSB. I think 2014 will be the peak year for the Wii U, and while it will almost certainly fall far short of taking the top spot for the year, it should still compare favorably to the competition, perhaps doing roughly on par or only slightly behind the XBO. If Nintendo can keep supporting it with strong first-party titles, it should have a decent finish by time it's off the market.

Pfff, Wii U will be the best selling system this coming generation.

The 3DS will go in burst in 2015 while Nintendo refocuses their efforts entirely on the WiiU for 2016 letting the 3rd parties do what they will with the 3DS .

Nintendo Land is a steal at $30 and I'm hoping I can buy NSMBU+NSLU (all-in-one disc) like is in this package seperately at some point (as I had NSMBU but traded it and will eventually want to play NSLU and own both after the gen is over).

Systems Currently Playing: WiiU, PS3, 3DS

Also Have: Atari 2600, NES, SNES, PS1, N64, PS2, Wii, GB, GBC, GBA, DSLite, DSi, Android (RazorMax), iPhone (4), iPad (2)

Nintendoland is so bad it even got Nintendo banned from E3. They showed it as the finisher to their last ever E3 conference and the organisers said "Sorry Nintendo, that just isn't right" and banned them from future conferences.

.........I don't get it.

Now THIS is my kinda bundle.. Alright Nintendo, you've FINALLY sold me. My limit to purchase the console was always $250, and now technically it has reached that price with this bundle, and actually even less as you get $60-$80 worth of games in the bundle, which you are only spending $50 more on. The console and 2 games (which also happen to be my most wanted games on the Wii U that are out now) for $300, is a pretty damn good deal to me. Assuming I land a job soon, I will be picking this up this year..

I wasn't sure either at first, but I think he meant because Nintendo didn't have an actual conference this year and just put out a Nintendo Direct.

Packing in Mario? That's so 1985. Then again, it also works. Good decision, Nintendo.

I actually like Nintendo Land a lot. It's a great game and showcases a lot of what the Wii U can do. NSMBU isn't really graphically impressive at all and looks 100% possible for the Wii to pull off but there is no doubt Mario is the biggest name. It's a lot of fun, too. This is what everybody said they should have done and Nintendo is finally doing it. They're trying to save the Wii U and I hope it works. It's a great console that needs exposure.

The SNES launched with Mario as well. The N64 was the first console to NOT offer a proper Mario as a pack in.

Heck, mine came with a mail in offer for SMB All-Stars, too!  It was Mario overload.  I can forgive the N64 since it had a Mario title at launch and, at the time, nobody was offering pack-in titles anymore.  Gamecube dropped the ball with Sunshine coming out so far after launch and, despite its success, I think the Wii should have had a Mario launch title, too.  Luckily Wii-Sports was able to tow the line.  With the Wii U, they had a Mario title at launch and opted to sell it seperately.  It was obviously going to move software but I still think it would have moved more hardware packed in!

I agree. Mario was INVENTED to be a pack in game and to sell hardware. And you know what? No one has ever done it better. Hopefully going forward, this becomes the norm again. Get those damn consoles in houses and THEN sell the software.
