With a lower price, new bundles, and a decent selection of games under its belt (including and especially SM3DW, due in just one more month), I think it will finally start to rebound in a big way. The PS4 and XBO will be brand new, and while they'll do well their first few weeks on the market, because early adopters are typically few in number I doubt either system will be able to individually best a system that's going into its second holiday (plus the PS4 and XBO aren't coming out in Japan until February, which could reduce the PS4's potential numbers by as much as 500k, though considering how poorly Xbox does over there it might reduce the system's holiday sales numbers by no more than 100k). It may be all too brief, as I expect the PS4 to take the #1 spot next holiday, but this could very well be the Wii U's one chance to be the king of the eighth-gen hill. That's not to say the Wii U will drop off a cliff again after the holidays. I think with all the gains it will have made this holiday, it should be able to retain some solid momentum in the new year this time and get some further boosts from huge titles like DKC, MK8, and SSB. I think 2014 will be the peak year for the Wii U, and while it will almost certainly fall far short of taking the top spot for the year, it should still compare favorably to the competition, perhaps doing roughly on par or only slightly behind the XBO. If Nintendo can keep supporting it with strong first-party titles, it should have a decent finish by time it's off the market. |
Pfff, Wii U will be the best selling system this coming generation.
