Forums - Nintendo - Now what is the biggest reason you are on the fence about getting the Wii U?

I WAS on the fence between PS4 and Wii-U simply because I grew up a Nintendo kid in the 80's and have owned every console they've released, AS they released them. But I just can't do it anymore. I've realized that it's just, not the same company I fell in love with in the 80's and 90's. The days of OOT are over. They're no longer either willing or able to create games, CORE games, that blow our collective minds. There was a time, between 85-'00 when this was the case, but no more. The last game I can remember was Metroid Prime, and that was what? 11 years ago?

I realized that my fascination with them is now all nostalgia. To this DAY, when I hear the theme to Metroid, Zelda, Mario and Donkey Kong Country, I stop in my tracks and drift off into some memory induced childlike trance. But that's all it is, memories. They were AMAZING memories, but you can't put your arm around them.

I'll always have my NES,SNES,N64,Gamecube to play but, that's where it ends. Its' time to say goodbye.

i really, REALLY hate comments like this. it's the same old Nintendo. idk what the fuck makes you think something's changed

On NES, they basically INVENTED the modern industry. On the N64, games like Mario 64 and OOT changed the way we think of hard core games and gameplay mechanics. During that stretch, they were at the forefront of this industry, umatched. That's no longer the case.

What CORE game has had the impact of Mario 64 or OOT, since then? I can't think of one single title. Sure, there's been a lot of great games, and I've purchased most of them, but that's all they were, great games. They don't reinvent the wheel anymore. They don't release anything hard core anymore that changes the very definition of "core".

That magic is gone.

you're acting like Sony has that so called "magic"

lol, magic my ass!

Nintendo is the same old Nintendo, wether you like it or not.

You're only 23 years old which means you were what, 6 years old when the N64 launched? I was 6 years old when the NES launched. So I've got a lot better understanding of not only Nintendo, but the entire industry. When I was your age, I was also a die hard Nintendo fan, defending them at every turn online. That was during the Gamecube years, which the Wii-U is probably most going to emulate. I was constantly facing charges of a company that had lost it's way. Double Dash, WW, Star Fox, Sunshine, hell even Metroid Prime, the best Gamecube game, was pretty much hated on by core gamers for being repetitive (I didn't see it, and still don't as I love the game). I was in total denial. This was NINTENDO. The father of the modern industry. The people who INVENTED Zelda and Mario. The single more innovative company ever. How could anyone dog them?

But it was pretty much all true. The titles on Gamecube, sans Metroid Prime, were all pretty much lack luster, by the numbers, safe and predicable sequels that didn't do anything better than their N64 predecessors. Great games, fun games, but the ground breaking innovation was gone. There's a reason why when you see a top 100 list, almost every time, the N64 version will outrank the Gamecube version. Sure, people of YOUR age, who were kids, have fond memories of Wind Waker and Sunshine and think they were classics but let me tell you, not many adult gamers felt that way.

If it weren't for the casuals, Nintendo would have been in a WORLD of hurt, at least with home consoles.

i played that N64 and enjoyed Mario 64. bought a GBC, enjoyed the hell out of that library, bought a GBA, enjoyed classics like Mario World and Mario Bros 3 and Metroid Fusion, etc. GameCube came, and i enjoyed Metroid and Mario Kart DD, Wii came, I enjoyed Zelda Skyward Sword, Xenoblade, Mario Galaxy, etc.

the games all felt "Nintendo".

also, Nintendo would be in a world of hurt? you do know that Nintendo made more money in the GC era (their worst era) than Sony with the PS2 (their best era).

there's litterally no point in continuing this argument so I'm just gonna stop now. have fun with life.

You ever see old people in nursing homes playing Ninja Gaiden, Kid Icarus and/or the first Metroid? lol. Hell, people who've never plays games in their entire life probably couldn't even get to the first castle in SMB lol.

Am casual so i don't know what i am talking about like 93% of the time. Just wondering what you think of Mario Galaxy 1 & 2. They claim to be the highest rated first party games on this metacritic website.

Thanks in advance and i'll pray for mojo.

Three great games that were absolutely outsold by Wii Sports, play and Fit.

If you like Nintendo console games and really need to be able to play them, but also need third party software to fill out your gaming diet ... you're kinda screwed honestly. You have to spend near $1000 on hardware (included associated extraneous accessories/controllers) each hardware cycle if you are going to buy both the Wii U now and then have to get a PS4 or XB1 as well without waiting too long.

That's just how it is.

If you're budget conscious, I'd recommend simply waiting for price cuts. To the OP, that's your best bet. Either that or be on the look out for clearance deals like the $199.99 Wii U Basic that Wal-Mart had going. Or (gulp) maybe try buying a used console.

They're great games, but didn't do 1/100th for the platforming genre that Mario 64 did. Mario 64 pretty much gave birth to the modern platformer and rewrote the way we play them, and games in general.
