Forums - Gaming - does the X1's 180 prove that Sony has the better vision for the gaming industry?

I think there is a great risk that this will be the last console generation, simply because now both Sony and MS ARE playing it safe. Gamers are conservative by nature, and that is why they should try to push them forward like Nintendo did, not just presenting upgraded Machines.

just out of curiosity when did Ninty push anyone forward? Outside of the WIi and DS and even then those two especially WIi was FAR behind the other consoles in just about every other department. This innovation speak is funny because it seems like people forget everything prior to WIi those were all just upgraded machines. And no one complained. if we take out the hardware upgrades these companies played safe just about all of the time. PS brought the DVD format to consoles, MS bought online to consoles sucessfully; keyword sucessfully.

I am sure I will get flamed and regardless I will be buying both consoles. BUT, currently I don't think Sony actually has a vision of the future so can't see how they can be credited with having the better one, it is really just more of the same with more horsepower, they are taking the easy risk free safe path, MS are trying, albeit somewhat unsuccessfully, to create a vision of the future around integrated digital experience.

I agree on the Sony part cant agree on MS, maybe its just the pessimest in me, but IMHO they didnt give a crap about any vision of a future, they simply wanted a way to see if they can make even more money. Not somethng i would call a vision, if they really cared about some integrated digital experience they would have just done that. Thier was nothing in their vision that would have benefitted consumers, if im wrong point it out to me, and im talking concrete stuff they did show not what if scenarios

Not to beat up on MS too much, but its not like Sony did anything great either, hell they actually did bad now that they are making people pay to play online(and i dont care if its cheaper than Live, itll never beat free) but what MS was pulling was much much much worst.

Innovation just for the hell of it is not good. It has to actually add or make something better. best case scenario its half assed but doesnt get in the way too much, worst case scenario, it hinders gamers.

Sony is more in touch with the common gamer than Microsoft is. Microsoft has a solid FPS foundation though, i'll give them that. Microsoft knows how to lure them but when they show them who they truly are they have to revert. The Xbox One is the console Microsoft has always wanted to create, they just waited until gamers let their guard down.

Everyone makes mistakes.

Remember that time Sony released a $600 console? They were actually under the illusion they would sell like hotcakes simply because it had a Sony logo on it.

Remember the Vita? Nuff said!

AFAIK Nintendo already launched a next gen console that does 4 of those 5 things and the one thing it doesn't do (headset) is honestly pretty irrelevant. As someone else said though, Sony is just keeping things status quo. It's not like they have some amazing vision for the industry. For all we know playing it this safe might not be the best move in the long run.

Sony is more in touch with gamers than Microsoft.

But it isn't just Sony. Nintendo, Valve and dozens of other Developers and Publishers fall into that category. Like Microsoft, they all want to sell you a product. But their attitude is different and that means something to some gamers I guess.

I can say " We want to make a product that gamers love to own" or I can say " We want to create a product that makes us butt tons of money". Really saying the same thing but 2 different ways of doing it.

Still Microsoft's policies before the 180 was only 50% of the issue. The other half was their way of talking about it. Their PR for it was as bad as Sony's $600 better get a second job haha

All you can say is that Microsoft has shown that they are listening. Beyond that it is just fanwars. "180" has been an annoying term by this point.

i love the term 180, its just a great pun.

It was ok at first.  Something is funny until it is overused.

For your question the industry tends to copy each other as long as they benefit from it.  Example the WiiMote created motion gaming.  Now you have PS Move which is almost a clone.

Or let's go with Achievements and Trophy system.

How about first controller with joysticks, Rumble, etc

Or an Online system(XBL, PSN, MiiVerse)

This list goes on and on.  Expect them to keep pushing each other (Copying depending on how you look at it).  What is good for the industry is a broad term.  I could see certain things trending from both at the moment.  I could see MSFT adopting the free game program similar to PS+.  I could see Sony adopting Cloud Computing by the end of the generation.  I could see Sony also adopting smart online and reputation similar to xbox live.  Or maybe they will "Copy" the impulse triggers.

My point is that the "180" is not because that Sony has a better vision but because the X1 will benefit from changing a few things just like Sony would benefit in changes through the generation or things they have done in the past.

MSFT and Sony only wins if the fans win as well.

Not even kind of true.

How much of the PS3 did Sony have to take back? Zero. How much of the new Xbone policies had to be overturned. Almost everything and they are still making new policies. In fact the PS3's first year outsold the 360's.

Sonys vision is nothing new.

Not even kind of true.

Reword it to "Made Motion gaming popular".  Is that better for you?  But I kind of figured that this was rather implied.
