Forums - Sony - Is Continuing To Support The PS3 So Much The Best Move?

GT6 should have a PS4 version announced with the PS3 one.

A massive part of why I feel confident in buying a PS4 at launch even though game library is thin is have complete confidence it will be supported for years to come the same way PS2 was and PS3 is. I expect to be playing great new releases on my PS4 in 2020.

Absolutely.
Games so PS3 owners get the most out of their console and have a more flexible time going over to the PS4.
The console is profiting, so Sony is at benefit as well - at first, PS4 will bring quite a lot of losses, which need the PS3 to offset them (is Vita losing money? if it is, then to offset Vita losses as well).

I really don't understand when people say Sony will make a loss on the PS4 at launch tbh.  They already said they make a little profit on every PS4 sold, about $25-$50 and it is selling out + software sales look pretty good.  Can you tell me how they are gonna make a loss on the console?

Jack Trentton said it in a E3 interview, but I have no idea which interview, can't remember.

It is not a smart move financially by Sony since it means that their old console is offsetting sales of the new one. But it is the right thing to do towards the players who supporter PS3. I hope they do not hold on to PS3 too long though and shift focus towards the new generation a lot faster.

So Sony tends to support their consoles for 10 years, or even longer in the case of the PS2.  This really does give the buyer reasurrance that they are buying a product that they will get their money's worth because the support is guaranteed to be there and I'm all for that, but I think Sony is going way overboard to prove this.

I still am shocked that GT6 will be on PS3 and not PS4 when that is Sony's #1 system seller, people can make whatever arguement they want, but GT6 basically trumps anything else currently announced on the PS4.  Also the arguement that it will be ported on PS4 later on, I'm gonna give the same response I did with Titanfall, if the average consumer can already buy a game on a current gen console then porting it to next gen gives no incentive for them to move to the next gen.  Games like R&C Into The Nexus I can understand being on the PS3.  As much as I love R&C it is not a system seller and will probably not help much with the launch of the PS4 so it makes sense to put it on the PS3 with the large install base.  Evolution Studios should have been the ones making the PS3 driving game and GT6 should have been on PS4 then they are still supporting the PS3.

People will make the arguement for The Last of Us, but that is perfectly justified on the PS3.  NaughtyDog has 2 studios that means right after Uncharted 3 was done NaughtyDog has been working on a PS4 title and considering how fast NaughtyDog is able to pump games out I can only assume it will come out by 2014.  It would not be beneficial to NaughtyDog to release 2 games on the PS4 and basically have those 2 games competing with each other, when they can just release one on the PS3 and make a ton of sales.

I can't really say anything on Beyond Two Souls because tbh we barely know anything about the game, and idk if its capable of being a system seller or not.  So what do you guys think, is this a good move on Sony's part or are they handicaping themselves with the PS4?

Whil eyou and I may not like it this is a business and as such this makes plenty of business sense. GT6 will most likely sell 20 million copies based on past GT sales. There won't be enough PS4 users to purchase that many copies of GT6 for some time. But there are waaay more than enough PS3 owners to pull that off. Sure GT6 will move consoles but how many when they most likely can't even meet the current demand? Just like we got GoW 2 on PS2 after the PS3 launched it's just the nature of the beast. I for one think its great for Sony and for die hard GT fans as they won't need to shell out $400 bucks to play their favorite game.

The decision to keep GT6 a PS3 title is the absolute smartest decision here.

Also, good for Sony supporting their consoles for the long haul.... That's how you build a fan base and recover from a rocky console launch to becoming the second best selling console of a generation despite being last to the table and having a few missteps along the way.

I don't see this as supporting the PS3 into the future... Essentially, most of these projects were delayed and they are just completing them.

Last of us was supposed to be Holiday 2012... Delayed to 2013
Beyond was rumored to be spring 2013... Delayed...
FF XIII Versus... Renamed and Delayed...
Last Guardian... Delayed...

It doesn't make sense to kill the investment made to date and move them to next gen... (Although Last Guardian probably is moving to next gen if it ever comes out [Case of ICO being overly ambitious with the hardware capabilities I think]).

As for GT and R&C... These are just iterations on the current game engine... They can cut these out like cookies in a bakery. GT will probably change around because reviewers did not take to GT5 well. But it will be the same game engine with a different game structure. R&C has seen many titles this gen so, a new one won't be anything earth shattering.

They are trying to prove people that if they buy a PS4, it will stay for 10 years.

The other PS3 exclusives can't make that point on their own?  Releasing your #1 system selling on a console that is on its last two feet and you have another console coming, it just doesn't make sense to me.

If anything, you're offering and supporting a product that still hasn't reached what was considered mass market pricing (magical $199 price point). It allows you to get revenue off of two viable platforms (and there will continue to be Wii U/PS3/360 multiplats for a while).
