Forums - Sony - Is Continuing To Support The PS3 So Much The Best Move?

If you were Sony you would want as much money out of the PS3 as possible. You want to have as many profitable units as possible. The PSP, Vita, PS3, are profitable right now for Sony. When the PS4 releases it will be selling mainly to people who already have a PS3. Those people will then buy a PS4 and possibly GT6 if they are a fan. This whole releasing AAA games late in the generation concept is very good for Sony because while the PS4 is selling well, so will all there other consoles that people were waiting for in the first place.

Some people are waiting for the price of the PS3 to drop. If they didn't want the PS3 at $399 then they won't want the PS4 at $399. So Sony's only option for that type of consumer is to eventually drop the price of the PS3 and watch millions more people jump on and continue buying games for it because it really does have some of the best games in the industry. The PS3 still has a long road ahead. Probably more than a ten year life cycle and I wouldn't be surprised to see PS3 outsell the PS4 for a couple of years.

No what they are doing is smart. PS3 lost a boatload of money right at the start, they invested money, and now it's in it's prime. They should exploit it now, and make the money back that they invested in it, while also slowly building up the PS4.

Isn't it easier/cheaper for Polyphony Digital to release a new game in the series on a system they've already been working on for all these years rather than start from scratch on a new system? It took, what, 5 or 6 years for GT5 to be developed and you think that it'd be smart to abandon the assets/skills the team obtained over those years to make a game for a system that will likely sell through the holiday on its own brand strength?

I think it's smart that Polyphony didn't wait another 5 or 6 years to release the nextgen iteration of GT (because that's probably how long it would take). GT6 will likely be a super polished and well received game. And Sony has plenty of firepower, so even if GT is the first party's flagship, consumers will be getting games steadily till the PS4 GT is released, no doubt.

In its prime ... What was the latest Sony financial report all about? and the one before it? and so on...? Still, if current preorders are somehow relevant, it may be a smart decision. For me, something doesn't add up just yet.

Ex Graphics Whore.

I think the guys at Sony know what they are doing. They are seeing the bigger picture.
