Forums - Movies & TV - I just watched the Man of Steel. I have no idea why reviews are so mediocre.

I'm concerned about this now. Had Man of Steel not been such a borefest with boring characters and story and execution, covered in 50 shades of grey, then I would have had something to look forward to with this announcement.

Now we have 2 gritty, grounded in realism, very serious, very boring characters in a superhero combination which should have been colourful and exciting.

Christopher Nolan is ruining DC Comic Heroes by grounding everything in reality and grittyness. I don't want a Bourne version of the DC Superheroes and their stories, I want a DC version of them. If they managed to get the balance right with Avengers, there is no excuse for why they couldn't get it right for

Christopher Nolan isn't ruining anything. He does what he wants based on his own ideal

What we expected was a Superman Movie. What we got is a hero who tries to never kill, killing and ruining the franchise from here on out. If he is just going to kill anyone he doesn't agree with or doesn't want to hurt someone that wont leave much room for anything else to come later on if he follows the same path.

Whats sad is how some people love the movie simply because it has action, while having little to no story, no chemistry between Louis and Clark, a complete disregard for the character.
Lets forget how the character and story were butchered and just focus on the pretty effects.
Yes at first I was just happy we got a decent Superman movie but after thinking about it more we really didn't. What we got was a Superman that resorts to killing if only a few people are threatened. Whats he going to do when Lex Luther threatens the world? Just simply kill him like he did Zod in the first one.
Worst part of the whole movie is when he cant stop Zod from moving his head but manages to move it hard enough in the opposite direction to completely break it. If he could move his neck enough to break it he could have moved his line of sight away from those people and never resorted to killing.

Okay genius tell me this. He would have moved his head which would have left the family to survive. What would have happened next? Zod would magically turn into a nice guy and turn to Superman asking him to be friends? NO GENIUS! He would just continue on causing destruction and killing INNOCENT PEOPLE. DO YOU UNDERSTAND NOW?! He killed Zod because he didn't have a choice!

No what you dont understand is he killed to save 5 people. Whats going to stop him from just killing any other enemy that comes before him? Oh Luther you want to set off a bomb and kill everyone? Dead.

No he didnt kill Zod because he didnt have a choice. He never even explored any other option.

You just dont get it. He is Superman. He does the impossible. He always finds a way, thats why he is Superman. He is better than your average human.

He only had to because that is how the story was written. They could have added kryptonite and had someone help Superman expsoe them to it and then him imprison them. He could have done what they did in the original Superman 2 that had Zod in it. Any writer that actually knew the character and what he stood for could have written a better way around getting rid of Zod then that. Why not bansih him to the phantom zone again?

In the few times Superman killed in the past, the odds were much greater than 1 family. Take any other plot from any other movie and Superman would just kill people before the second act to stop there from ever being anyone in danger.

I know Superman 4 is a horrible movie but even in that movie he manages to not resort to killing something just as powerful as him. If even the really bad ones can manage to keep his character intact, I see no reason the "good"ones cant

I was reading the thread and saw this comment.  You say alot of things that I've heard elsewhere.  I'm just going to jump in with my two cents.

I've been a Superman fan since I was a little kid.  That means that I've read the comics, watched the movies, bought the toys, watched the cartoons, etc.  People have expressed their problems with Superman killing Zod.  The thing is, Superman killed Zod in Superman II and he killed Zod in the old comic from like 1986 or something.  Superman just can't get enough of killing General Zod!

So, in Man of Steel, did Superman (who has only been "Superman" as we know him for a couple of days and isn't very experienced, yet) kill Zod to save five people or did Superman kill Zod because Zod said HE WAS GOING TO KILL EVERYBODY.  We know that Zod was raised to protect Kryptonians.  With no Kryptonians left, Zod said out of his own mouth that he no longer has a purpose except to kill.  Zod had become Doomsday and comic book fans know that Doomsday is just destruction incarnate.  Thousands died in the Superman vs Doomsday fight (comics, not cartoon) when Doomsday went on his rampage and Metropolis got destroyed.  Same goes for Superman.

And, for people wanting their corny "Look up in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane!" Superman, that guy was long gone except to people that just watched 80'scartoons.  The character has evolved way beyond that.  Superman no longer has all of the answers.  He deals with people that consider him a god, racism, xenophobia, choosing between two catastrophes at once, etc.

Bottom line:  I agree that the writing could have been better but virtually everything except for Jonathan Kent being a dumbass comes from the comics or the DC Direct cartoons.

Well I enjoyed MOS just because how action sequences were executed in them. It brings both hatred and awe.
But I was simply awed at almost every sequences. This one particularly...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=so9tFIxXEws

Watch this one, too.

DC has been doing this thing for YEARS in the comics where people don't really trust Superheroes anymore.  Don't you guys remember Watchmen?  Well, that whole thing has expanded through the whole DCU several times.  From The Dark Knight Returns to Infinite Crisis, heroes just aren't clear cut heroes anymore.

You can't really say that superman killed zod in superman II. He just kinda pushed them into oblivion, he didn't snap their necks. Personally I think the original superman movies were charming for their time but they are a bad example. The thing about comics is you can't just start cherry picking storylines, you really have to look at definitive stories. For example, there are many comics where batman has killed or used a gun, but the definitive version of batman that just about everyone agrees is definitive is one that doesn't kill and doesn't use a gun. Even Mr. Dark and Gritty himself Chris Nolan knew that. He kinda bent it a little with batman allowing Rhas to die in Batman Begins, but overall he stuck to what is considered the definitive principles of the character. Because he did that we were able to get the brilliant storyline of The Dark Knight.

Having those hard and fast principles are important. I know everybody its cool and hip for all the heros to be conflicted and edgy with moral gray areas, and I enjoy that myself. But can't we have just one hero that still stands up for his principles even when its not easy? I thought that would be superman, but apparently now even Batman has a stronger moral compass than Superman, thats kinda sad. Those principles really seperated the DCU characters from most of Marvel's characters who outside of spiderman are perfectly fine with killing. I just hate to see every single superhero going for this moral grey area thing. It makes for interesting stories but it would be nice to have atleast one superhero that stays true... always thought that would be superman.

I think the hype was just too high. The trailers for some reason were just really incredible and uplifting, so everyone around me (mostly non-nerds) were totally drooling over it. You're almost always going to have a lot of disappointment in a situation like that.

I'm still looking forward to seeing it.

Currently playing:

Bloodbath Paddy Wagon Ultra 9

It's because Superman is a lame and boring super hero.

I have to agree with that.

IMAX 3D is easily the best Theater screening of the movie.

Its probably best if you wait for 3D Blu-Ray & 3D streaming.

Here's my review of Man of Steel 3D IMAX:
