Forums - Movies & TV - I just watched the Man of Steel. I have no idea why reviews are so mediocre.

The movie was terrible. The only thing I really expected from the movie was good action scenes and I didn't even get that. Don't get me wrong, there was PLENTY of action. There was an abundance of action, but none of it was very compelling. It was just repetitive and boring. I might as well have been watching action figures smacking up against each other, thats how engaging the action was.

If you want to see a well choreographed fight scene done right watch spiderman vs doc ock in spiderman 2.

If you want to see an alien invasion action scene thats actually fun and engaging watch the Avengers.

Hell if you want to see a good superman fight scene watch the end of Superman Doomsday (cartoon, but still good).

Even the plane crashing sequence in Superman returns was a better set piece than anything in this movie.

I just hate loud and obnoxious Michael Bay style action - i.e ADD camerawork, with fast cuts where you can barely tell whats going on - and that is all this movie had.

wait, people actually liked Iron Man 3?

Iron Man 3 was flawed but atleast it had interesting characters that were enjoyable to watch. None of the actors in man of steel felt like they even had a pulse. Amy Addams is the most boring lois lane ever. Usually lois lane is the spunky one that provides a counter to the more straight laced Clark, but here shes arguably more boring than superman.

Do not tell me you're speaking about Superman fooling everyone with a pair of glass ? ahaha comics.

LOL... In the so called "gritty and realistic" Man of Steel he does the same thing at the end. Noone recognizes him because he put on a pair of glasses.

Hated the film and contemplated walking out of it a few times. I knew this was going to happen due to influences probably from Christopher Nolan - making everything dark, depressing and apocalyptic.

Superman had zero personality. He just seemed to float through the film like a fart with no personality.

Jor-El's uploaded guide presence thing was equally 2 dimensional.

Superman is meant to be super intelligent and his father was supposed to have educated him on earth (being a super scientist himself an all), but here Superman was a bit on the dumb side.

So much stuff made no sense whatsoever, like:

1) Why is Superman such a boring fart? Where did his personality go?
2) Every Tom Dick and Harry from his past knows who Superman is due to his heroics before he got his disguise and him then going on national TV to give himself up etc
3) Superman would never have fought them on earth due to the large number of casualties and damage done to the city. Even in the original Superman film, he took them away from the city. Here, Superman was just as destructive and cavalier as the villain.
4) The end made no sense whatsoever. Superman got stronger as the Kryptonian gravity got stronger. That shit is illogical. When he was at the center of that device, he should have been crippled and completely drained. How the hell he broke all the laws of physics from any given planet is damn right miraculous. They should have just added a flying Unicorn with a rainbow shooting out of its rear end!

Above everything else, there was no depth to the character or characters, the entire film was just one big giant glorified DragonBall Z fight scene, barely any story worth remembering, and the film just lingered on. There was no urgency or climax or build up, it all just felt like a weird state of dream like when you are suffering from sleep depression.

Considering what this film could have been, this was very disappointing. Christopher Nolan's approach worked to an extent for Batman since Batman is set in a dark and depressing world (made colourful by the over the top caricature like villains) and the approach fits it, but Man of Steel has pretty much butchered anything Superman couldh have been. There goes any hope for a decent JLA film -_-

LOL exactly my sentiments... 1> Zod and superman in the end comes down to earth bring down satellite debries with them, louise sees them falling far and in the next scene in the museum she is with them talk about teleportation...2> city is completely totalled but somehow daily planet building survives and one guy has two tickets for some games....and everyone was back in the office working... And the biggest shit was Louis Lane knew clark kent is superman... also Going to a church and asking a priest wht he should do. That is just poor writing..

Lol are you actually serious. The dumbest disguise of all time is Supermans. He wears a pair of glasses and all of a sudden no one knows he is Superman?

She is an AWARD WINNING INVESTIGATIVE journalist and yet she can't seem to figure out that Clark Kent is Superman. I thought what they did in the end was logical. She knew who he was but kept it a secret.

Lmao pair of glasses as a disguise and all of a sudden no one knows him... LOOOOOL

What we expected was a Superman Movie. What we got is a hero who tries to never kill, killing and ruining the franchise from here on out. If he is just going to kill anyone he doesn't agree with or doesn't want to hurt someone that wont leave much room for anything else to come later on if he follows the same path.

Whats sad is how some people love the movie simply because it has action, while having little to no story, no chemistry between Louis and Clark, a complete disregard for the character.
Lets forget how the character and story were butchered and just focus on the pretty effects.
Yes at first I was just happy we got a decent Superman movie but after thinking about it more we really didn't. What we got was a Superman that resorts to killing if only a few people are threatened. Whats he going to do when Lex Luther threatens the world? Just simply kill him like he did Zod in the first one.
Worst part of the whole movie is when he cant stop Zod from moving his head but manages to move it hard enough in the opposite direction to completely break it. If he could move his neck enough to break it he could have moved his line of sight away from those people and never resorted to killing.

Okay genius tell me this. He would have moved his head which would have left the family to survive. What would have happened next? Zod would magically turn into a nice guy and turn to Superman asking him to be friends? NO GENIUS! He would just continue on causing destruction and killing INNOCENT PEOPLE. DO YOU UNDERSTAND NOW?! He killed Zod because he didn't have a choice!

While I thought MoS was better than expected it wasn't mind blowing or anything. A lot of the writing was mediocre. The whole "this isn't super man, he would take them away from the city, etc." complaints don't hold water in my opinion. This isn't the comic, in the lore that the movie made for itself. In the movie he was a reluctant "hero" and was tormented left and right for being odd. He never really did anything but lift stuff to save people.

Basically, he never really got in a fight and never really explored his powers until he started flying around in Antarctica. Having never explored his powers or fought anyone from Kyrpton, it's sort of hard for him to know "this fight is gonna be super destructive, I should move away from the city." Sure, you can argue after the first fight, he would have known the destructive nature of the battles and moved away, but the enemies were gonna mess stuff up and blow things up looking for the....whatever it was called....regardless of where Clark was.

In the end he goes to the Daily Planet. Who at the Daily Planet knows who he is other than Lois Lane. The only person who he has talked with and seen him was Lois Lane so everyone else working there just thinks he's a new employee because how can they compare him to Superman IF THEY'VE NEVER SEEN SUPERMANS FACE!

God damn why do I have to explain this to people. I thought it was logical.

Also to the people saying Superman should have taken the fight away from Earth...Zod had his little gravity thing DESTROYING EARTH. You wanted Superman to just leave and say to Zod "Yo follow me let's go fight somewhere else". I'm sure Zod would have stopped his plans to demolish earth in an attempt to create a new land to live in. He would have followed Superman to an isolated enviornment just to fight him.

THAT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE NOW I UNDERSTAND!

First, I don't remember this forgettable movie that well, but I seem to recall that Perry White and a few others were standing right there while superman and lois were making out. Which means they know what superman looks like and should have therefore recognized him when he walked through the door. Now even if this was not the case it still doesn't explain my next problem:

In this age of smartphones there is noway that superman wouldn't be caught on camera by somebody eventually. Hes not exactly operating at night time or stealthily like Batman... with that said, how does Clark intend to just "lay low" at the Daily Planet? The movie seems to be suggesting that that is the gameplan, but how long could that possibly last?

I will agree that the acting could have been better. Amy Adams..meh. Michael Shannon bad in some parts, awesome in others. Cavel did alright. Russel Crowe did pretty well I thought. I mean the parts with his "consciousness" were bad, but it was supposed to be a computer simulating his intelligence, so I can chalk that one up to be "computerish on purpose"
