Forums - Gaming - Can indie developers stop showing off how nerdy they are by making 8-bit/16-bit games?

Its lazy, its "Nostalgic" , its an excuse to cash in into a game with minimum effort  , yet people see it as "Artistic approach" really, its done to death.

all these games are different they're not the same game

I'm not saying these games are bad, but the fad needs to stop,  they seem to release an "8-bit styled game for TRUE GAMERZ" like every month, just this E3 they announced 5 of them (the two at the bottom ) and a sequel to Hotline Miami.

Fuck this thread, mainly because Hotline Miami and Terraria are brilliant games.

And oh my shit Starbound looks fantastic.

Nothing wrong with 8 bit styled graphics. Sure, they don't fit all games, but considering how they help developers save money and they provide a sense of abstract representation, they have a place.

Besides, Terraria is 16 bit.

SNES runs through my veins. Never stop, indie devs!

didn't say they're bad, just the 8-Bit art style for the sake of "Artistic" style is lazy.

why not we go back to the days of "Fixed camera" Horror games style for a change?

or Fixed Camera RPGs ? or 3D platformers (like Mario 64 not Mario Galaxy)  , there is a lot of "Old School" styles that aren't used, yet developers love to use the 8bit

do we really need like shoot em ups / beat em up styled in 8Bit  games every month for the sake of being indie?

indie shouldn't be about throwbacks to old days , it is supposed to be about pure innovation.

this is backwards thinking.

None of those art 8 bit

Games can and should tell stories and share ideas through their mechanics. This is the intrinsic element of the medium and this is how experiences should be crafted in video games. No company does this as well as Nintendo and their echoes from the past.

Because they are indie developers and they are working on a tight budget. Sometimes it can be teams of 3-4 people. Super Giant Games for example, the developers of Bastion and Transistor have 10 employees.

2D / 8-Bit games are cheap and easy to develop, while at the same time still being fun as hell and really appealing to the eye.

nope.

If there is a market for it, then they will buy and they will keep making them.

I find incredible stupid when people use the "needs to stop" bullshit. I am not calling you stupid just in case you are wondering, but seriously get off your high horse.

Indies games are in general the closest to the original idea of the game.

People that say games are not art say games are too influenced from the beginning concept to the final product, hence product.

AAA games go through the focus testing, idea pitching, and marketing ball licking bullshit to then be released to us. Indies don't. Well at least most dont.

Why would they stop if there is market for it.
