Is family sharing gone? Even for digital titles?

Gone. Better luck next gen... Im sure Steam will offer it in a year and be considered awesome sauce.

Well, that kinda sucks. That was one of the few things the One had over the PS4. It'll be awesome if Steam adds it, though.

Maybe later this gen M$'ll release a digital only system with that feature in tact.

I don't know @disolitude... the only think that can make a company do radical changes after all the stress during E3 is money... I mean sales.

The first preorder report sales after E3 could be shoed Xbone really bad... so bad that makes Gamestop to stop to take Xbone preorder to have a really long talk with MS... everything changed after that.

MS is not stupid to insist in a thing that will just kill them... and I'm not talking about forum users... it the general users that go to the physical store to buy their consoles and never read anything about in internet forums.

I was just about to make a thread about this topic. There's also an article about it: http://gizmodo.com/the-xbox-one-just-got-way-worse-and-its-our-fault-514411905?utm_campaign=socialflow_gizmodo_twitter&utm_source=gizmodo_twitter&utm_medium=socialflow

I think the sharing and profile on the cloud were real innovations but now they're gone because paranoid gamers want to hug their discs...

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

I 100% agree with everything in the OP

Not at all happy about this change

Microsoft isn't the type of company to backtrack easily. I mean people requested the start button in windows 8 and they are getting it with the next update...but it doesn't do anything start button did before. It has a brand new function which is bound to piss people off even more... And Windows 8 sales aren't stellar at the moment.

You could be right though. Maybe Microsoft had some warnings in terms of sales and decided its better to get their foot in the door and then flip the switch. The current change in strategy doesn't totally align with Microsoft long term goals, but they probably didn't see another way.

5) This is a massive misnomer on your end. This is why I've pulled it out from the other four.
Gamestop was a ripoff because people allowed it to be and traded/bought from them. If MS policies went through, these types of non-deals would be the ONLY choice you have as you were forced to use Gamestop/BestBuy/Amazon/Walmart/etc for trade-ins and used gaming.

However, now you have the real choice of still using person to person, Craigslist, eBay, etc. That is where the real deals are for used games anyways. Selling and buying a game is ALWAYS a better deal through person to person channels than any retailer. Better for the seller and buyer. Your want for MS policy would have destroyed this option and definitely cost resellers/used buyers more.

This.  If it's a game I like, I don't sell it, but if I don't like it, put it on Ebay and usually I get close to what I paid for it.

There are far more Gamestop stores than Best Buy and Amazon gives much lower trade in values than Gamestop does, so Gamestop would pretty much have you by the balls if Xbox One kept the DRM.  The prices at which you trade in games would not increase, rather they'd decrease because Gamestop would know they're more than likely the only one you'd go through.

The DRM benefited retailers and Microsoft.  It screwed gamers and independent retailers.  The way it is now, gamers have the power to do whatever they want with their games and if I want to sell a game day one after I purchase it, I can do so and probably get $5 or $10 less than what I paid, rather than $30-40 less at Gamestop.  People who use rental services can use those as well, so need to buy then sell to Ebay if they don't like it.  Try it out on a rental service and then trade it in for a new one.

Great article. Spot on from my perspective and how I see things. But I guess I am in minority. The Verge also posted a negative article about this change...

The problem with gaming is gamers, they suck. People in the industry have been saying this for years; gamers are the most whiney, vile, self righteous, entitled set of consumers.

There are lots of benefits to digitally based gaming with DRM which to me are 10X better than disk based gaming...I would be willing to pay more for games to have these benefits. But to each is own...

People really need to use Steam and PCs for gaming before jumping the gun on digital based DRM. It's really not the boogeyman.

I guess there just weren't enough of us to make a difference. I wish we at least had a choice in the matter.
