Forums - Microsoft - Things that are made worse with todays Xbox One DRM change

MS should come out with an optional DRM system. Not sure what it could be like but maybe all $60 games are 50$ but you cannot resell them or share them. Then maybe more people will be happy and more people buy their system.

Its not as easy as it sounds.

You can't imprint a disc with options like that, meaning that you have to either provide codes with the digital game or have DRM disks and non DRM disks at best buy. Imagine the confusion if there were 2 versions for each game except one needs 24 hour internet checkin and one doesn't but doesn't unitlize many cool next gen seamless features and needs to be manually swapped?

But I swear, some people will never be happy. I bet even with the dropping of Kinect and a $100 price cut people would still pick the PS4 over the XB1, for reasons outside of games.

I would still get the PS4 for three reasons.

1.  It's the PS4.

2.  More powerful hardware.

3.  The last one is actually the games.  The only exclusive I'm really interested in on the Xbox One is Killer Instinct.  Compare that to an exclusive I'm interested on the PS4, Infamous Second Son.  I also have a feeling more Japanese games I'm interested in will be exclusive for the PS4 over Xbox One.

Now there is a slight fourth reason, I'm not going to specifically count it, but it's something that is still better on the PS4 over the Xbox One.

PS+ even if the PS4 is required to play online multiplayer with it, still is a great value for the PS3 and Vita where you will get free games per month while you're on it.  That adds even more value.  It's specifically not for the PS4 and we don't know how good it'll be on the PS4 when free games start coming to it, so that's why I'm not listing it additionally as a reason to get one over the other.

5) This is a massive misnomer on your end. This is why I've pulled it out from the other four.
Gamestop was a ripoff because people allowed it to be and traded/bought from them. If MS policies went through, these types of non-deals would be the ONLY choice you have as you were forced to use Gamestop/BestBuy/Amazon/Walmart/etc for trade-ins and used gaming.

However, now you have the real choice of still using person to person, Craigslist, eBay, etc. That is where the real deals are for used games anyways. Selling and buying a game is ALWAYS a better deal through person to person channels than any retailer. Better for the seller and buyer. Your want for MS policy would have destroyed this option and definitely cost resellers/used buyers more.

This.  If it's a game I like, I don't sell it, but if I don't like it, put it on Ebay and usually I get close to what I paid for it.

There are far more Gamestop stores than Best Buy and Amazon gives much lower trade in values than Gamestop does, so Gamestop would pretty much have you by the balls if Xbox One kept the DRM.  The prices at which you trade in games would not increase, rather they'd decrease because Gamestop would know they're more than likely the only one you'd go through.

The DRM benefited retailers and Microsoft.  It screwed gamers and independent retailers.  The way it is now, gamers have the power to do whatever they want with their games and if I want to sell a game day one after I purchase it, I can do so and probably get $5 or $10 less than what I paid, rather than $30-40 less at Gamestop.  People who use rental services can use those as well, so need to buy then sell to Ebay if they don't like it.  Try it out on a rental service and then trade it in for a new one.

There are lots of benefits to digitally based gaming with DRM which to me are 10X better than disk based gaming...I would be willing to pay more for games to have these benefits. But to each is own...

People really need to use Steam and PCs for gaming before jumping the gun on digital based DRM. It's really not the boogeyman.

I think the whole mess is very unfortunate, I also think the change is a backward step, but really the fault lies with the atrocious PR job MS did of the whole thing. The one thing I really despise about the current gen consoles is they are the only thing I have preventing me from being completely digital only. At least the Xbox is keeping the all games can be purchased digitally and downloaded but personally I feel I lost more than I gained in this backwards step and the loss of the family sharing being the biggest. But the crowd has spoken and I think those that prefer digital are still in the minority.

I use Steam, but only if the game is exclusive for PC or digital exclusive on consoles.  I like to collect my games so disc format will always be better to me, regardless if it doesnt hit 60-120fps and have better graphics.  Unless of course I can get the game for dirt cheap on Steam and the console version is a joke.

The other thing is  I don't like DRM at all, digital included, so if I can't get something less than $5 on PC, unless it is disc based with no DRM, which is rarely going to happen, then I won't get it at all.  So most of my games on Steam are from Humble Bundles where I got the games for dirt cheap.  Few of them are games I paid to get through sales like L4D 1 and 2($5 in a bundle,) Cthulu Saves the World and Breath of Death 7($1,) the Last Remnant($3,) Terraria($0,) etc.

I totally agree with this. Microsoft failed to make a compelling picture on why digital only is the bees knees and why DRM is needed for this to work and they thought that if they provide very little information about it, gamers will not ask questions and subsequently freak out. The media loves to write sensational articles and will use fear to get peoples attention, and where there is uncertanty, there is plenty of fear.

I actually understand your case as I have 2 friends that are in the same boat. They like to collect and physically own games or so they explained it to me. Totally understand this...but this point of view has to be a minority. Most people get games to play them and they don't care if a disk is in the console and a game box is on the shelf no?

I think even a lot of non collectors like to own what they have. Movies can be bought much cheaper through digital and there are a lot of people that still purchase Bluray movies. Some people have wall to wall bookshelves full of DVDs and Blurays. I know only one person personally, but I've been to someones home who had a ton of movies.

Gamers are the same. There are people who like all digital, like one of my best friends. After he started purchasing games, he purchases all digital. He doesn't have a PC which I try and talk him into getting because he'd like PC gaming better because he does do all digital. Cheaper, better graphics and framerate. But then other friends I have, even the ones that don't collect, don't like purchasing digital because they don't get anything with it.

I guess having a physical item makes most people feel they have ownership and they've spent their money more wisely over people who have hundreds or thousands of items all in digital format..

Don't get me wrong though. Digital format is great, honestly. For me if I didn't have to own every game I liked then I'd love to be all digital. Everything I have accessed whenever I want through a couple clicks from anywhere. I wouldn't have all these physical items taking up so much space, etc. So I see where people who like digital are coming from. Just not for me..

MS and Sony are going to digital... every game for both willl have a digital version.

That a point I don't understand... MS can mantin the digital sharing and everythint else together with the offline disc based thing... the complain was about the used games disc based games and the internet checkins.

They can do everything they want with the digital content.

I think they just absolutely didn't want to make it sound like steam, so much so they avoided all the good points which steam offers so they kinda shot themselves in the foot by not drawing similarities in services/prices etc.
