Forums - Microsoft - Things that are made worse with todays Xbox One DRM change

I will skip the whole sharing thing since we don't know exactly how taht was going to work, but it most likely would have been awesome. Here are some of the things I can think of.

5. Gamestop and Publishers can keep screwing users with used games and passes

Gamestop loves the new direction Xbox One is taking. Wonder why...

How is anyone screwing you with used games?  No one makes you buy a used game.

Stop hating and start playing.

MS today put the Xbone again in the game and people yet complain... the generation was lost until yesterday... MS saw that in the big difference in preorders and made the first smart move in since the Xbone reveal.

What do you care? Will you buy an xbox now?  The vast majority of people complaining about it wouldn't buy one either way.

I don't think MS saw it that way, otherwise they wouldn't have did a 180 and dropped the DRM + online check.

But I swear, some people will never be happy. I bet even with the dropping of Kinect and a $100 price cut people would still pick the PS4 over the XB1, for reasons outside of games.

It's just that simple.

Just wait the preorders results... I checked some online stores and this news just put Xbone over PS4... at least now in US the sales will be way better for Xbone now.

Gamestop is obvious happy after all the mess that they did yesterday to show to MS that the preorders are bad for them.

That's the thing though...why do I give a flying fuck that Xbox lost the generation? I am not an xbox fanboy. I personally don't think they would have lost anything but maybe the first few years in sales. But I really don't care if they are in last place.

Xbox One digital strategy genuenly had features that sounded very appealing to me and I wanted to see what their vision for digital console gaming is all about. Why is that so hard to believe? Instead we are getting a half baked digital/disk based DRM that is a generation behind rest of the cutting edge consumer goods.

Pretty much anyone that has been gaming on the PC and knows how DRM works knows the advantages and isn't bitching about the Xbox One. Majority of the people bitching about this here are uneducated or just scared of change...there are those that are trashing the Xbox with anything they can get and don't care either way.  I'm not saying that people that trully can't access the internet on a daily basis don't exist...but these people don't post on VGchartz on a daily basis.

Either way you look at it, consumers got "choice" but lost features and other choices in the process.

Is family sharing gone? Even for digital titles?

I just realized that Microsoft is 1 step away from fixing this for everyone.

When I buy a retail copy, give me a choice... Let me choose, digital, always on DRM, or disk based DRM when I'm installing it.

Digital DRM - no resale, no disk swapping, fast switching and all goodies that come with digital software

Disk DRM - last gen disk swapping but with resale stuff

Can we get a petition going people?? I'm serious... :)

They can solve it 2 way:

  1. Sell a digital copy install disc for $5. Install disc will install the game and then take you online to purchase the digital copy license for $5 cheaper.
  2. Sell a Blu-ray + Digital Copy version for $10 more. This will include the game disc and a digital license as an activation code. You enter the activation code into your Xbox One.  It will tell you to insert game disc, so it can verify you have the game. Once verified, you get digital rights. This method wouldn't prevent people from giving away codes, but would just make it harder. You and a friend could both get the game for $35 each. An extra $10 is better for the developer to get, than see nothing from a Gamestop re-sale.

You're right. There is no way to tie the physical disk to game install meaning that they would have to use pack-in codes or dedicated digital disks.

I really hope they have digital disks ready on day 1 next to physical copies. Once people see how convenient the silent software background updates are and don't have to update every time they decide to insert a disk to play the game, and how cool cloud  game syncing is, the faster loading and instant app switching, no disk swaps necessary on instant game resume...etc...they are bound to think twice about running disk based games even if they think digital DRM is the devil.

This will actually provide for some nice comparisons. Digital vs physical game benchmarks on same console.

It's unfortunate, some manager blinked. MS could have refined digital sharing or even made it a configurable option with an offline mode, which would have been the best. Perhaps they will in the future, who knows. But this time the luddites and hate-machine has triumphed, alghough I'm not totally convinced of that. It's also entirely possible that the big publishers picked up the phone and said "sharing? oh no you don't."

One question... do you think MS took these decision based in press, game forums or sony fans? I'm pretty sure they saw what the general consumers that go to the stores wanted before change their policies... they know that they will lost even a long term if they stay with the old policies.

That's all about money after all... MS know they lost at general consumers.

No company makes bigs changes withou evidences they are really loosing the market.

I think its a mix of everything to be honest. I really don't have accurate infor and I am in no position to speculate.

Here is an interesting story... I bolded a few interesting parts. I wouldn't be surprised if Gamestop, Bestbuy...etc are the reason this was changed. They don't want to lose retail grip on consumers and want a cut.  Why would they help push people towards digital, even if its better?

"Yeah we passed that around the office at Xbox. Most of us were like "Well played Sony, Well played". That being said they are just riding the hype train of ZOMG THEY ARE TRYING TO FUCK US FOR NO REASON. Without actually thinking about how convienent it would be for the majority of the time to not find that disc your brother didn't put back... [...] just simpleminded people not seeing the bigger picture. Some PS4 viral team made them all "U TOOK R DISCS" and they hiveminded."

    >Everyone and their mother complains about how gamestop fucks them on their trade ins, getting 5$ for their used games. We come in trying to find a way to take money out of gamestop, and put some in developers and get you possibly cheaper games and everyone bitches at MS. Well, if you want the @#$@ing from Gamestop, go play PS4.

    >The goal is to move to digital downloads, but Gamestop, Walmart, Target, Amazon are KIND OF FUCKING ENTRENCHED in the industry. They have a lot of power, and the shift has to be gradual. Long term goal is steam for consoles. [...] If you always want to stay with what you have, then keep current consoles, or a PS4. We're TRYING to move the industry forwards towards digital distribution... it'sa bumpy road

    >Publishers have enourmous power. Microsoft is trying to balance between consumer delight, and publisher wishes. If we cave to far in either direction you have a non-starting product. WiiU goes too far to consumer, you have no 3rd party support to shake a stick at. PS4 is status-quo. XB1 is trying to push some things, at the expense of others. We have a vision, we'll see if it works in the coming years
