Forums - Microsoft - Things that are made worse with todays Xbox One DRM change

disolitude said:

I will skip the whole sharing thing since we don't know exactly how taht was going to work, but it most likely would have been awesome. Here are some of the things I can think of.

1. Disc based games do not sync with the cloud or show up in your library profile

http://www.engadget.com/2013/06/19/xbox-one-drm-marc-whitten/

Going to a friends place to play Halo 5 which you bought on disc? You will have to have your profile on a USB if you want the controller profile or game save to be there. Your digital profile will not have your settings for this game available.

2. Fragmenting of a gaming library

Only digital purchases show up in your profile. If next gen consoles are backwards compatible or there is no next gen much like there is no "next gen" for PCs, your gaming library will be partly digital partly disk based. If disk drives go away, so does your gaming library

3. Digital purchases can only be made on xbox Live.

For those that want to avoid disks like the plauge (like me), they can not take advantage of Best buy and Walmart clearances of games to buy digital games. Retail bought games are locked to the disk and not my Xbox Live ID. Intead the only place we can hope to get deals from is Xbox Live marketplace.

4. Disk swaps and verification checks for no functional reason other than to enforce DRM

Self explanitory. I'd rather have internet do something so I don't have to.

5. Gamestop and Publishers can keep screwing users with used games and passes

Gamestop loves the new direction Xbox One is taking. Wonder why...

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=163044

1. Simple solution. Only buy digital.

2. Once again, if that is important to you, only buy digital.

3. Don't see why that is a problem.

4. Still don't get why this is a problem. Buy digital if it is.

5. If you let gamestop screw you that is your fault. Buy used from ebay.

1. Yep it should all be clear in a few weeks as more info comes out.

2. I agree actually. Did you see my next-gen digital only thread? I think they will put out smaller cheaper hardware to match with digital only libraries. With only exception of maybe Nintendo.

I think its just personal preferences mostly.

I just realized that Microsoft is 1 step away from fixing this for everyone.

When I buy a retail copy, give me a choice... Let me choose, digital, always on DRM, or disk based DRM when I'm installing it.

Digital DRM - no resale, no disk swapping, fast switching and all goodies that come with digital software

Disk DRM - last gen disk swapping but with resale stuff

Can we get a petition going people?? I'm serious... :)

lol, i and a lot of other people posted that as the ideal solution.   it seems so obvious, make it an opt-in system and let everyone choose what is best for their lifestyle.

Based on what?  I'm basing my opinion on what Microsoft was saying would be possible.  How could you say it's no where near the same as used gaming when it doesn't actually exist and no formal plans were made?

They gave a 10,000' overview at E3, so I'm not sure how you can say it isn't or is the same as the current used game system?

What are you going on about? It was clearly laid out.

Disc now.
You own. Can be gifted/sold/bought freely to/from/through anyone... infinitely. oh, also rental options.. so if game sucks, no loss..

Their system.
Can only "gift" once to someone on your live system for more than 30days. Then game is theirs permanently... can't ever be gifted or traded in or sold again.
Can only trade-in or buy used through approved dealers based on fixed prices.

How is that anywhere near the same?

Lol... people are still going to find a way to spin this negative. Get over it guys. Microsoft made the right decision and they just earned my $499.

And to think, I was just about to pre-order a PS4. Dodged a bullet with that one.

I usually would agree, but some people seem to genuinely like the old features of the xbox one. What is wrong with the ps4?

The only thing wrong with the PS4 is the controller. It might seem like  a small issue to some but I just cannot adapt to that thing, plus my favorite exclusive is on xbox.

Yeah this would totally work for me. The family sharing is nice but that isn't why I'm upset... I want my library to follow me digitally moving forward but I do like the convenience of buying a retail disk here and there and isntalling it.

Hell I'm pissed that Xbox One doesn't play my digitally purchased Xbox 360 games.

If MS who makes the damn console can come to term with this mess, why can't some of its fans?

Let it go, they were in the wrong and are trying to move away from it. You guys should too. Now fans will have choices, unlike when MS dictated what to do with games people would purchase.

Your post brings nothing to the discussion dude. My points still stand...

It stands nowhere as nothing got worse. This is good, a lot of share stuff came out of nowhere, probably to appease some, it can still be implamented if they want to. But as a whole, it's a great day for xbox nation. It's really all positive.

Postive...not according to me, few people in this thread. This article...

http://www.theverge.com/2013/6/19/4446356/back-to-reality-microsofts-new-xbox-one-policies-retreat-from-the-future

We don't know the full scale of this yet. What if Microsoft decides to make a smaller no-disk version of Xbox One in 5 years? Half of your library can't be played cause you couldn't install your disks and make them digital...

What if a portable all digital console comes out that plays xbox 0ne games? No disks for you...

What if Nvidia Shield makes an app that allows it to stream Xbox One games to it. Except it can only stream games you have tied to your profile...hence no disk games can be streamed.

There will always have a few, but at least now the xbox one has a future. This was going to be a bloodbath, just total beat down later this year. But, now the Xobx one has a fair chance to lead or be in the running.

At least the cloud thing is still there.

Oh thats cool then, xbox does have the best controller. Though the ps4 seems to have really improved on the controller too though.

If owning a disk is so annoying just buy your games digitally, Sony said all their games would be available on PSN at launch I bet it will be the same for the X1. People are getting so lazy they can't get off their couch to change their games in their consoles no wonder obesity is so rampant

I also want to add that people who liked the old features should understand that they were still just half measures. I said it before, either MS goes all digital or they go status quo. They can't have it both ways. I would have actually praised MS if they took a hardline and went all digital (minus 24 hr check in, but with value added from discounts). The confusing restrictions and requirements were just too much.

Can only trade-in or buy used through approved dealers based on fixed prices.

How is that anywhere near the same?

And if you gift it, how does that impact you whether or not a person can gift it beyond you?  You would still have the ability to gift it and you could, in that ability negotiate a price for the gifting.  The reason for the 30 days was to prevent someone from hacking your account, adding their gamertag as a friend, then gifting your entire game collection.  The benefit of buying new is you can gift it if you want.  The drawback of getting a game gifted is you don't.

The prices weren't fixed.  The prices were left up to the retailer.

This also doesn't exclude possible changes in the future.  Remember, a recent legal requirement in the EU would have required Microsoft to develop a means to  allow gamers to sell digital content.  So to comply with that they would have had to implement something.

Just because a system isn't in place doesn't mean game rental wasn't possible.  It absolutely is in a active DRM world, just as it is in a passive DRM world.  The problem is a system wouldn't have been available at launch, but it isn't to suggest that the problem didn't have a solution.
