Forums - Microsoft - Things that are made worse with todays Xbox One DRM change

1. Ok. This may be true I guess we will wait and see.

2. I actually don't think console reboots will happen the way you think ever again. Becuase if they do reboot this again in 8 years, everyone will laugh at them and tell them to take a hike because Android and iOS gaming devices are available with massive libraries that can do the same. The hardwre spec war is starting to reach its limits and software war is where its at...

3. Again maybe you are right but sounds more work than checking the weekly flyer and going to buy a game thats on sale

4. fair enough - not convenient but maybe a minor complaint

5. fair enough - not convenient to me but maybe other people are ok with it

It appears our argument boils down to convenience vs money

1. Yep it should all be clear in a few weeks as more info comes out.

2. I agree actually. Did you see my next-gen digital only thread? I think they will put out smaller cheaper hardware to match with digital only libraries. With only exception of maybe Nintendo.

I think its just personal preferences mostly.

It would have still had a second-hand market.  Microsoft was working out those details.  You would have been able to go into a retailer and trade-in a used game and you would have been able to "gift" your game to someone.  The latter wouldn't have precluded you negotiating with the person for a fee to do that gifting (i.e. they buy it off you).

MS trade-in / gifting system was no where near the same as used gaming now.

I read the articles as you having the choice on system setup of going DRM free or having the existing policies they've announced since E3. DRM free gives you more flexibility but you'll lose the benefits of a cloud based profile. If this is correct its great as I would like the cloud based system as I don't buy/sell used games and the sharing features would be awesome amongst my friends . I would have been annoyed if they had removed the cloud profile option given all the benefits they sold to me.

THere is no choice. They removed all DRM and it will operate almost identically to X360 does now. Probably with more cloud features though for game saves and profiles etc.

If true, Microsoft fans should thank us Sony fans for fighting for their rights ;o

Yeah. Thanks.

That is obviously a joke, if you read some of the posts in the Microsoft threads in the last few weeks, you will notice a huge number of Microsoft fans claiming that Sony fanboys are the only ones that are shitting on the Xbox One everywhere on the internet.

What the hell are you talking about?

Sony fans never had the intention of buying Xbox hardware. If this IS a backpedal, it was Xbox fans talking with their wallets.

That's some crazy, twisted logic you're working with, there...

You said it, so you should thank them.

The first response was sarcasm, due to the fact that this so called "liberation by Sony fans" isn't as rosy as a lot of you would make it out to be...

IM seriously pissed off about this.

now this has happened there are so many amazing next gen things we will all miss. Don't get me wrong Microsoft have the best exclusives Imo for next gen so far. The most varied genres and the best visuals.

but sharing, full game libraries and what happens to cloud processing now? Will devs make 2 options on the game? Forza 5, titanfall and ryse for example all make use of cloud processing.

i hope i don't just end up with a ps4 as my xbox one. What a crap next gen that will be. That's not next gen, its this gen with prettier graphics.

damn the bloody internet fools who couldn't see past what they think is their rights etc. Microsoft were offering stuff like family sharing which pissed all over used games.

I just realized that Microsoft is 1 step away from fixing this for everyone.

When I buy a retail copy, give me a choice... Let me choose, digital, always on DRM, or disk based DRM when I'm installing it.

Digital DRM - no resale, no disk swapping, fast switching and all goodies that come with digital software

Disk DRM - last gen disk swapping but with resale stuff

Can we get a petition going people?? I'm serious... :)

I will skip the whole sharing thing since we don't know exactly how taht was going to work, but it most likely would have been awesome. Here are some of the things I can think of.

1. Disc based games do not sync with the cloud or show up in your library profile

http://www.engadget.com/2013/06/19/xbox-one-drm-marc-whitten/

Going to a friends place to play Halo 5 which you bought on disc? You will have to have your profile on a USB if you want the controller profile or game save to be there. Your digital profile will not have your settings for this game available.

if sony can take my disc based copy of PSASBR and seemlessly move my save file and customization preferences back and forth with my vita copy surely MS and there vastly superiour networking skills can figure that out too..

2. Fragmenting of a gaming library

Only digital purchases show up in your profile. If next gen consoles are backwards compatible or there is no next gen much like there is no "next gen" for PCs, your gaming library will be partly digital partly disk based. If disk drives go away, so does your gaming library

..and who's to say you library won't be lost anyways?!?.  my old PC games aren't compatible with windows 8  because technology has changed so much.   at the rate things are changing i wouldn't doubt that a digital library can still lack forwards compatability and worse  yet... that decision resides with MS not with me.  at least my disc based my gaming library always exists so long as i keep my hardware.  i can still play my NES 20+ years later.

3. Digital purchases can only be made on xbox Live.

For those that want to avoid disks like the plauge (like me), they can not take advantage of Best buy and Walmart clearances of games to buy digital games. Retail bought games are locked to the disk and not my Xbox Live ID. Intead the only place we can hope to get deals from is Xbox Live marketplace.

i check prices both online (amazon) and digitally (psn).  i can't speak for live but sony's prices have always been fair with market value.  there have been a ton of sales too that are well below market price.  if MS isn't doing that,.  that's their problem.

4. Disk swaps and verification checks for no functional reason other than to enforce DRM

Self explanitory. I'd rather have internet do something so I don't have to.

i don't like disc swaps either.  but at least consumers are given choice.  digital and physical both have down sides.  but you have to move the market by proving value not be eliminating choices.  sony approached this soo much better.  instead of saying "GO DIGITAL" they said "hey, we are introducting GoPlay that minimizes one of the burdens of digital.  I hope you like it."   some will, some will not.  but consumers are empowered with choice.

5. Gamestop and Publishers can keep screwing users with used games and passes

Gamestop loves the new direction Xbox One is taking. Wonder why...

Based on what?  I'm basing my opinion on what Microsoft was saying would be possible.  How could you say it's no where near the same as used gaming when it doesn't actually exist and no formal plans were made?

They gave a 10,000' overview at E3, so I'm not sure how you can say it isn't or is the same as the current used game system?

If MS who makes the damn console can come to term with this mess, why can't some of its fans?

Let it go, they were in the wrong and are trying to move away from it. You guys should too. Now fans will have choices, unlike when MS dictated what to do with games people would purchase.

Your post brings nothing to the discussion dude. My points still stand...

It stands nowhere as nothing got worse. This is good, a lot of share stuff came out of nowhere, probably to appease some, it can still be implamented if they want to. But as a whole, it's a great day for xbox nation. It's really all positive.
