Really, all the games only support one pad? Well that seems illogical as well, but ok

My friend just said he'd love to buy another one, so I figured it must be good for something

Then your friend is an idiot.

almost all of my friends have for almost all their systems  2 or more controllers.

and i'm pretty sure most console owners(with friends) have two or more pads.I don't think that this is stupid nor special wanting to buy a second pad.The only stupid thing is that after half a year there is still no game supporting two main controllers.

You can play old new super mario U with 5 controllers(4 wii+1 wii u() but you cannot play with 2 wii u controllers(and you can't use the wii u classic controller with the 2 main nintendo u games(nl,nsmbu)???-that is stupid!

PS

Buying a second controller is pretty comfortable to avoid waiting time while the controller is loaded.

what if U need a replacement controller? over time the buttons will wear theres no doubt about that and you will be forced to purchase an expensive gamepad when ever they do decide to release

Give me one good reason why you'd want to buy an additional gamepad.

A little hint: there is none.

So you are telling me that Nintendo will replace any broken game pads for free?

Yes they will. They will replace your broken console for free as well, same thing.

That was unnecessary

It was. But this is the internet and anonymity promotes verbal aggressiveness.

The masses would end up thinking this is a Wii accessory. They'll probably end up selling them separately once the Wii is discontinued.

That was confirmed by Nintendo since launch... you don't need two Pads because there are no game that can use two of them... if you have any issue Nintendo replaces your Pad by $85.

Just an FYI - for all multi-player games the 2nd, 3rd, 4th player uses either wiimote/nunchuk or classic controller pro.

Currently no game supports more than one gamepad and if and when they do - it'll come with a price. Lower FPSs. Two gamepads will be the max and that'll likely be for games that aren't graphically taxing (or just using the gamepad screens for something basic like maps).

If that seems idiotic to you... well... you wouldn't be the only one to feel that way.

Graphical intensity isn't the problem. At least, not the most immediate problem. Bandwidth is. Tolerances are very tight for low-latency wireless video at that quality level. It makes no difference whether the video you're sending is Animal Crossing or Crysis, if you're sending two signals, the max framerate you can send to each tablet needs to drop in half. This is aside from whatever strain rendering two or three viewpoints places on the Wii U's computing resources.

And to answer the OP, I'm pretty sure that if your friend accidentally smashed his gamepad, Nintendo customer support would ship him a replacement at a reasonable fee without requiring the purchase of another Wii U.

1. Break the one you have in a way not covered by warranty.
2. One to play and one to switch out on charge always.

Your first reason isn't about an additional gamepad, but a replacement, and you can buy one directly from Nintendo. Your second reason isn't actually that bad of an idea, as the gamepad's batterylife is extremely short, but who the hell would spend $140 for that??

I'm not sure if you can even have two Gamepads synced to the same WiiU. I think you'd have to re-sync your extra Gamepad to the console, everytime.

Better invest on higher capacity batteries.

It would be too confusing right now. Nintendo did a horrible job at differentiating Wii U from Wii and too many people would have just bought the gamepad not realizing the difference. Additionally, there are no games yet that utilize more than one pad.

By 2014 I expect all this to be changed as better marketing and dual gamepad games have launched.
