1. You can replace directly with Nintendo... you just can't buy a new one.
2. That is a good reason.

I'm sure if you contacted the Nintendo service department and had a registered Wii U on record, they'd probably sell you a game pad, even if you had to make up some sort of BS story like "it was stolen" "someone took it out of the house and lost it" etc. It probably wouldn't be cheap, but I seriously doubt they would tell the Wii U owner "sorry sir/ma'am, but you'll just have to buy another console if you want another game pad."
I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason why Nintendo isn't shipping them to retail outlets currently is because there is no reason for anyone to have two since no games support it, and because production costs are probably still at a point where Nintendo would essentially be breaking even if they wanted to sell them at a reasonable price that didn't create consumer backlash.
On the plus side, there are decent odds that Nintendo may release an improved or upgraded version of the pad by the time dual/multi pad support is introduced. Or at least different colors, which is something Nintendo consumers have shown they like.

People have and said it was $150.
Broken, under warranty pads seem to be billed as $90.
This was info that came out shortly after launch.
2012 called, it wants its breaking news back.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.
Nintendo really screwed themselves with this one. Who ever greenlit this consoles concept should be fired. Seriously.
Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!
Killzone 2. its not a fps. it a FIRST PERSON WAR SIMULATOR!!!! ..The true PLAYSTATION 3 launch date and market dominations is SEP 1st ![]()
I thought I read an article that stated each pad would be 120 dollars a piece and become available when games come out that support deul gamepads. Also, I heard you can purchase another one if yours breaks for the same price.
They're not selling them because people would be complaining about the price...
They would rather just not sell them separately at all...
Am I joking???
Possibly...
Have a nice day...

You will have to say to Nintendo that the Pad was stole or anything like... I think Nintendo didn't show the price for a new one... I know the replace is priced at $85 in US.
In any case you need a good excuse to buy a new one from Nintendo... and the process is not fast too... you have to make a order and the replace is made in a predetermined time (at maximum 30 days I guess).
