Forums - Nintendo - Adam Sessler responds to Nintendo not having a large press conference at E3

I honestly still can't tell if this is good or bad after thinking about it for the longest of times.

Massive conferences are cool and hyped but usually live streaming them isn't worth it when you wait for 2 hours and get nothing. Usually pick up the news from IGN after the conference.

NDs on the other hand are too little known. There's not much stuff you can tell the general public from those.

Guess we'll see.

One thing we don't take into consideration is who they're inviting from the press to the closed presentations. The mainstream media could still get hands-on time with the best of Wii U titles, and still get the word out, just in a forum separate from the one where said title was actually announced. They get the hype from the direct side, and then make sure that the right people actually play the games in order to optimize their exposure.

What they sacrifice is that one moment a year when even Sony and Microsoft fans stop and watch what Nintendo has to say, but that's very red-ocean thinking, when instead they can feed the base and target the members of the press who will actually be receptive.

I can't wait for the E3 Nintendo Direct, I honestly don't see a big difference between a stream of the ND and a stream of a presentation - the ND will cut the useless crap, though.

Hear what Sessler says and see why it matters. Nintendo Directs are aimed at hardcore/core Nintendo fans. E3 is aimed at the gaming world.

Exactly. E3 gets more press than a lone Nintendo direct ever will and even on Youtube it will get more hits because its spread amongst websites and posters, therefore more exposure. Nintendo is going to get a mudhole stomped in them in marketing this year and it starts at E3. Lets hope they offer up something really....really big. Iwata has also acknowledged that the Wii U is selling slowly because of a lack of compelling games just like the DS did in the beginning.

but nintendo will be at e3, just not with a press conference in front of the audience. it's not as if ign or whatever wouldn't still get exactly the same informations as with this conference. who do you expect to hear about wii u because of the conference who won't hear about wii u otherwise?

someone reading a newspaper? will read about it with or without conference because the journalist will have the same informations.

someone reading on gaming websites? will read articles about exactly the same games as with conference

someone watching tv? the tv channel will have someone walking around from booth to booth to show some stuff and have maybe an interview with some representatives

people on youtube? will watch the same trailers and gameplay videos with or without conference

i seriously don't know which audience would only hear about mario kart or whatever with a conference instead of a booth and press rooms.

Sessler is just wrong here. If Nintendo makes news during a Nintendo-Direct, then major websites & blogs will cover it, & non-nintendo users will eventually hear it / see it. Whether it's e3 or n-direct, news is news, & i don't imagine that kotaku or ign will ignore it because it's a n-direct & not e3. In fact, revealing something at e3 is more likely to be lost in the mass, whereas a n-direct might be the major news for that random day or week.

I'm sure Nintendo has something big to show or at least something kind of big. It could be a possibility they don't want to share the spotlight with Sony and Microsoft since all eyes will be on the two new consoles. So they would rather hold a separate conference to show off games, but it is also possible that they have nothing to show they perhaps could be a year away from releasing those big name games.

I want to add that there is no actual spotlight for them to share, metaphorically and literally.  With the videogame industry, it like the saying goes, "the cream always rises to the top."  Whatever the format they so choose, or what ever is the biggest announcements, the flame from either Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft will spread.  As videogame enthusiasts, we will find out the biggest news from all 3 companies.

Just LOL man! come on... giants with ZERO install base.. relax =)

I am relaxed, and sad for Nintendo. Nintendo hasnt been my first choice since I was really young in the 90's and this is proving every reason why. Actually I didnt really have a choice in the matter when my parents got me the NES and SNES, but they were my childhood. My respect is there  but that comes with heavy disappointment.

What exactly did change?  I mean I buy Nintendo consoles because their games have a special flair  Mario Zelda Mario Kart etc.  The only thing different is that they lost most of the JRPGs.

Back in the day there were games like Contra  or Final Fight and Turtles etc  awesome games  but those games dont exist anyway   so what does a PS3 or 360 have  "old" Nintendo consoles had  but the Wii  for example has not?

Average games  crafted by people that are rushing their games out    games without soul  etc is nothing I want.  And the occasional sports, racing games always came to Nintendo consoles.

The only reason why I bought a 360 is because of all the early  japanese games and Dead or Alive 4. The only reasony why I bought a Ps3 is because of JRPGs.  I have like 40 PS3 and 40 360 games but 50-60 Wii games.

If Jrpgs would  target WiiU  as they did with DS    I would not have a reason to buy another console anymore.   But sadly games like tales of graces come out on PS3 in europe  but not Wii   and other games were not even made for Gamecube, Wii etc at all.

I mean if I would have to choose 1 game for the whole 7th generation I could keep and the rest would be destroyed It would propably be Xenoblade. This is a typical  OLDSCHOOL-FLAIR game.  I love games like that.  Graphics dont matter every game will look like shit sooner or later (when its not an artstyle masterpiece like Wind Waker etc)  So I concentrate on the most important aspect from the very beginning which is gameplay.

Old school flair....thats just the problem. Its always nostalgia and never moving forward, never pushing what new characters can be brought to the table. Thats why I left Nintendo for greener pastures. I like old school, but it cant be all you are or you will eventually become so stale the whole world will eventually notice.

You missunderstand. I am talking about oldschool-flair as in   EVERYTHING WAS BETTER BACK THEN. When I play Xenoblade I feel like when I was a child etc. Xenoblade is far from having old school gameplay.  On the other hand  Call of Duty is exactly the same as Medal of Honor was 15 years ago.  Racing games dont change  they are either simulations or  arcade or copy Mario Kart which is by far the most fun (fun is what games are about) racing series that exists.

Mario evolved a lot. Dont judge Mario by comparing SMB with NSMB that makes no sense since NSMB is somewhat supposed to be like the old games. Look at Mario 3D.  Mario 64 is the reason so many other games worked.  Mario sunshine was not an evolution but Galaxy again changed the rules.

There  is almost no evolution in any game  so saying you left Nintendo because their games dont change makes no sense. You cant be bothered to take a look thats the problem.

How does e.g Sony change the rules or bring new stuff to the table? I mean seriously  Uncharted is Tomb Raider, God of War is ancient Devil May Cry without guns but with swords. Sony owes alot to third party. Or desperately buys companies that made 1 average game so they secure some exclusive IPs.

Alot of people say Mario Kart or Mario Sluggers  is the same as Super Mario in terms of IP. That makes no sense. God of War is more like Devil May Cry than Mario Kart is like Mario Galaxy.  Just because the game has the same main character doesnt make it the same IP. Sure Nintendo should have used NINTENDO KART instead of MARIO KART and include Link Samus etc (maybe we get a Super Smash Kart one day) but its still not a Mario game in the original sense.

Most of the games that came out in the last 10 years give me a I COULD PLAY SOMETHING BETTER feeling. Because i feel that those games lack something.
Whereas  Zelda, Xenoblade or even the new Fire Emblem Awakening which I got 2 days ago make me want to keep playing.
Sure Nintendo also lost some of its charm and alot of their new IP (with low budgets) feel like average games but its still there. Charm that games like Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Terranigma on SNES had (that retro-flair I was talking about) and games like FF 13 Call of Duty, Jak n Daxter etc have not.

And Nintendo actually has/had a ton of new IP. Or their IP changed for the better as in FE Awakening.   Nintendo now owns Project Zero. They made Day of Crisis (sure not a great game but its as average as most games today are). They have stuff like Magical Starsign. Advance Wars/Battalion Wars. They had Geist  and Eternal Darkness.  Golden Sun, Xenoblade kicks most other RPGs ass. Nintendo made pushmo. There is like 40 or so new IP's since 2000.  People just dont know about them or ignore them. Mario&Luigi, Another Code etc....

Seriously the world is realistic, brown, and grey enough. And thank god Nintendo uses some color.  Other games try to look super realistic but they dont and in a few years they will look like shit.

I cannot really explain what feeling I get when playing Nintendo games or some japanese JRPGs. I dont know how to exlain it. I just know that alot of todays games give me a "meh when can I finally save because I need a break from this" feeling.

Deep stuff, bro. I totally agree with you about COD being exactly what Medal of Honor is. You know Activision, They focus too much on cheap games that sell like hotcakes like Guitar Hero and COD. Medal of Honor, yes was the exact same thing. Want to know the crazy part though? During that era storylines in games meant something. In retrospect the JRPG's were the best on the PS2, PSX and SNES in my eyes. Those were the top consoles for them. At one time Nintendo was the JRPG king then Sony came and took them all. Its like Sony forgot about Japan this gen and that saddens me because this console war with Microsoft would've been over long ago. Nintendo offered very few third party titles which tend to have the most variety with their first party plus they lost Rare who was their ace in the hole for mature gamers taking all those great Rare IP's with them outside of Donkey Kong Country's art direction.

I learned a great truth about Nintendo, that if they want a mature title they wont make it themselves they'll just buy an outsider. With Xenoblade I guess it counts that its theres now. They had Rare do all the dirty work for them in the SNES era and their third party was top notch when they had no strong competition.

Uncharted is not Tomb Raider. People don't get whats so special about Sonys mark in gaming. Sony's always wanted to create an experience that bridges the gap between movies and games as well as making gamer games like ico, shadow of the colossus, legend of Dragoon and more in the past. Uncharted comes fromt he same mindset as where Jak and Daxter and Rachet and clank come from. Uncharted might be a treasure hunting game but it is more in the vein of Indiana Jones than Tomb Raider, has much more charm and much like Gears of War takes a little bit from the best games out there to become a great hit that set its own standards for what Action/Adventure games are. It inspired Tomb Raiders rebirth even though Lara is no longer Lara, but I must applaud Cyrstal Dynamics on trying to mimmick the dramatic effect of movie-like direction in games and closing the gap between movies and games and putting full control in your hands with brilliant direction. Next gen with Sony theres going to be so much more than power we will have CG-like graphics but great stories, newer ideas branching in so many different directions. Knack looks awesome to me. Can't wait to see where it goes.

The only thing I want from Nintendo at this point is X. I will play Xenoblade Chronicles because yes it does play differently and the Last Story even the game looks totally aged because the Wii U will play Wii games. That was the only thing they had published that was right up my alley besides Playing Zelda and Mario Galaxy. Smash was fun but I play real fighters, such as Tekken. Not to say Smash isnt a great game, but I am glad the new smash is being developed by the makers of Tekken. Nintendo has to bridge the gap and of course as I told you before they always get  great third party to do it.

This generation came out with some great IP's Nintendo couldnt get their hands on in the current gen and thats all Nintendos fault. Adults like games with a lot of brown, what can I say, but it doesn't mean it should hinder the stories and gameplay direction. There were great trend setting IP's like Red Dead Redemption, Bioshock, Heavy Rain, Gears of War, Uncharted, Jourrney, The Walking Dead, Assassins Creed, Dead Space, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Ninokuni (probably my favorite JRPG this gen), Lost odyssey and much, much more. Nintendo wasnt in on the huge boom of indy games, but they are trying to catch up and bless them for it but the community isnt going to be like the PS4 and 720's.

Nintendo has a ton of new IP, but Sony has made more by themselves. Microsoft has acquired a ton of third party support that Nintendo hasnt seen in years. Nintendo has great experiences but I but the offerings outside are becoming overwhelming. I am sure Nintendo is even feeling the pressure and I think its playing out in their decision to step away from the grand stage.

I am glad you get that feeling from Nintendo though, very deep and much appreciated, bro. You almost took me back emotionally to when I was a child and enjoyed Nintendo.

Personally I couldn't care less as the media in this country reports fuck all on E3, most people just read game sites here.

If they do report on E3, they just steal it from one of the game sites anyway lol.

Yes, but Nintendo will suffer from lack of exposure and only gamers will know where to go and thats a minority of people. Its not the group of people Nintendo is looking for.

Uh...would Sony and MS gamers care about Nintendo's press conference in the 1st place?

I mean they'll watch it sure, but will they go and buy a console for it?

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/profile/92109/nintendopie/ Nintendopie  Was obviously right and I was obviously wrong. I will forever be a lesser being than them. (6/16/13)

While it is slightly sad and alarming, I'm just going to pretend they're doing it because E3 presence is going to be on MS ans Sony anyway.

I agree, it seems as if anything they're going to say is just going to get drowned out by two major console release launch games.

Better to just wait it out and get your own media attention, imo.

I was damn close to buying a Wii after Nintendos 2010 conference. E3 is where the best show off what they've got. If you go off thinking everyone is ignorant to Nintendo or not trying to keep an open mind you'll have a bad outlook everytime. The big three are the heart and soul of E3 and the third parties are the royal subjects. When one steps down panic will occur because a lot is expected from all of them.
