It could be a possibility they don't want to share the spotlight with Sony and Microsoft since all eyes will be on the two new consoles. So they would rather hold a separate conference to show off games, but it is also possible that they have nothing to show they perhaps could be a year away from releasing those big name games. |
I want to add that there is no actual spotlight for them to share, metaphorically and literally. With the videogame industry, it like the saying goes, "the cream always rises to the top." Whatever the format they so choose, or what ever is the biggest announcements, the flame from either Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft will spread. As videogame enthusiasts, we will find out the biggest news from all 3 companies.

Yes, but Nintendo will suffer from lack of exposure and only gamers will know where to go and thats a minority of people. Its not the group of people Nintendo is looking for.

That's not necessarily true. Nintendo's exposure will carry as much as the importance they deliver. The same with Sony and Microsoft. Take for instance Nintendo's latest ND. We hear mostly about the Legend of Zelda LTTP sequel and Earthbound translation. The rest like Mario Golf, a lesser game, will have less exposure. Same with Mario and Donkey game, which is also a lesser francise than Zelda and the recent Earthbound by way of Smash bros. Ness character.
As for a vast marjority of people getting the information, E3 is widely praised as the epicenter of videogame information, but that information is not regularly carried out to mainstream audience. Speak to people not in the know about E3 and a good amount of them will not know what it is. I would go so far as to say that most people get their gaming news from the commercials they see for more recent games. When someone like you or I look for news on gaming, we go to sites like this, other people who really arn't so interested, will wait until some flashy commercial comes along and that's when they'll start informing themselves. Maybe if E3 was televised in a network like NBC or Fox, then it'd be useful as advertisment tool. All the info we get come from committed sites like vgcharts or IGN. We don't go to E3.com and look at the latest gaming news.
Take for instance the poplarity of comicon. Sure, it's advertised as the biggest comic convention out there, but most people don't figure out what's happening on the next issue of Fantastic Spiderman. Instead, the mainstream audience will know more about Avengers 2 and Thor 2 or the next Captain America movies. That's because those are the cream that taste best on most people's palates.
