Launch console and at the time, it did have games.  A few exclusives, some ports, and a lot of multiconsole titles.  The Vita sold well around its first few weeks of launch and that wasn't even during the holiday season.  Just wait until this holiday when the Wii U isn't a launch console and we'll see if the sales happen to hit numbers as good as launch numbers. 

I really don't expect the Wii U to get eight million by the end of the year.  It's around 3.5m right now and its holiday launch was 2m.  The PS4 and Next Box as new consoles are going to overshadow it as well as cheap consoles like the PS360, plus the 3DS which is more than likely going to sell the most.  Let's just say by some chance the Wii U sells two million in November and December.  It needs to sell 2.5m from now until October, which with the way it's going right now I don't see happening. 

My prediction is the Wii U is going to be seven million or less by 2014.

I agree. I said no more than 7m in this thread in April and I'm sticking with that.

All these consoles launched in November(unless i read it wrong).  As you can see they all had a much higher 2nd year than 1st year.  This is because people are now aware of these consoles mainly because there is more games in the 2nd year.  3rd year is stronger than 2nd year.  When it comes down to it, the launch year is always one of the lowest selling years.

If Wii grew by 2x - 3x in it's second year, and Wii U sold 2.5 million units during its first November/December, that means Wii U should sell at least 5 million in November/December alone, that is assuming Nintendo releases a few good Blockbuster games. I think we should expect Wii to sell around 8 million for the year.

I was mostly betting based on the original quote which stated a date that had already passed.  Hence me saying that I'd won, little joke there.  But sure what the hell, I'll do avatar control for a week.  That's not so bad.

It has performed well below what I expected and I didn't imagine an avalanche to begin with. I believe that it will manage another 5-6 million this year though, we'll see how the holidays turn out for them this year.

in orrder to reach 8mil it will have to sell a lot more than it is now. christmas will see a boost but not enough to lift wiiu from 3mil to 8mil.

Yeah, I agree - it'll have over an 8m install base by New Years Day of 2014.

Still a far cry from what I once predicted though, unfortunately...

Still possible for 11m but looking very unlikely. If Nintendo has some heavy hitters this holiday season for all major regions then I think they would have a decent selling console. I am extremely interested in what kind of impact pikmin 3 will have on the sales.
