Uncharted has become the series it is today thanks to Sony feeling pressure from the success of Xbox with its 'gritty shooters', an ex-Naughty Dog developer has revealed.

Talking exclusively to Play, Don Poole, former Environment Modeller at Naughty Dog, explains how Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was originally a 'fantasy' game until orders came from Sony to make it more 'realistic'.

"We were talking about a more 'realistic' game in terms of how it was modelled and rendered but the concepts were much more far out. One was a forest world where the antagonists lived underground," explained Poole.

"It had elements of Tolkien in for sure. Sony kept pushing for a more realistic game in all respects. The market had changed a lot by then. The demographic was older and gritty shooters were really dominating. Sony wanted very much to get into that market share, it pushed all of its developers in this direction."

"So the big push from Sony, not just at Naughty Dog but at all of Sony's development companies at the time, was to craft games for PlayStation 3 that were much more realistic. The pressure from Xbox's success with gritty shooters was a very real force on our direction at that time."

We had a lot of internal grumbling about the realist bent. More of the old dogs were from the Crash and Jak era and preferred that more whimsical style. But alas, that was a losing battle."

I was okay with this until Naughty Dog replaced Jak 4 with The Last of Us.

I'd like to first say that I played both games and I prefer Uncharted, but I don't understand why so many have to prove that Uncharted is better and that Tomb Raider took from it. If people liked Tomb Raider more then that's their opinion why try to change that. And about Tomb Raider taking from Uncharted yes it obviously took a lot but there's nothing wrong with that, everyone does that even Uncharted. It's actually a good thing for us that developers take elements from highly acclaimed games.

I am not a fan of action adventure nor i m fan of TR and or UC, for me UC has always been over the top game. for me infamous was better having said that i have played both TR and UC, it is clear that First UC took on TR and made it 10 time better, and now its also a fact that the new TR took UC elements and improved upon it, but not to a level what first uncharted did... since i finished the TR i felt that this is what UC3 should have been..

wasn't legend half shooter half tomb raider,i remember zip lining and shooting my way through some russian base

I've always loved the tomb raider series. Except for angel of darkness. Anybody remember that game, that I never finished.

It's no secret that this tomb raider is heavily influenced by Uncharted. I mean, just look at the multiplayer. It's not a bad thing, honestly. The game looks very stunning and well put together. Hell, it even sold more on the PS3 on release so yeah, there's that.

Thank you Uncharted Based God.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

Don't really care, Tomb Raider (the last one) is more fun than all four uncharted games.

I don't care which influenced which, the game has to be good, there is a lot of games that were 3D platformers before Mario 64 came out, they were crap for the most part, no one cared that Mario ripped them off.

I remember reading about this

I'm glad they went the more realistic way and showed all these other companies how it's REALLY done. The new Tomb Raider wouldn't be here if ND went with the fantasy route with Uncharted. We probably wouldn't see an Uncharted influence in a bunch of our new games either like we see today

I'd rather them save that fantasy stuff for Jack & Daxter

True, and Naughty DOG is bound to inspire again with the Last of Us. This could turn into a sick series if they let it.
