Forums - Gaming - What Tomb Raider learned from Uncharted (Videos)

Hmmm guess I already played TR years ago judging by these videos. I could never take a game seriously that looks like a blatant rip off.

Its not a bad game. You really should play it, but in story, animations, graphics (on the PS3) set pieces and more it couldnt hold a candle to Uncharted. On consoles its like right under Uncharted 2 in visuals. It feels more like lara croft is rambo/mcguyver than lara croft. With the realism of the game theres no way she could've pulled off the things she did while injured. They tried to copy how the guns were held as well from uncharted but that failed and the ai are bullet sponges. The AI is also dumber. This chick made  way too much noise to ever pull of stealth as well. I've gone hunting, myself and there were so many moments where I was like "this chick would so be dead in real life because of (take a number)". Also, its not the secondary characters weren't the worst but by god the script for them was so terrible.

On the flip side despite not doing what Uncharted does better it added to what inspired it with the bow, more open spaces, as I said before this game allows you to take exp and upgrades your killing skills and weapons which are pretty much set up just like uncharted (but deadlier). The mini boss fights were easy as hell but fun (played it on hard). Just try it though its good. The game is clearly an eight on my chart.

As a gamer which have played Tomb Raider Legend and Anniversary and in some part some older Tomb Raider games i can honestly say the new Tomb Raider has nothing to do with Tomb Raider anymoore. You can call this game Uncharted 3.5 if you want, which isnt a bad thing because i have alot of fun playing this game even if it was not as great as Uncharted 2 and 3.

This is what I hear from actual Tomb Raider fans. The ones that enjoy the Uncharted style of game anyway really like it, but there's a lot of them that are angry it's strayed away from what they loved in the original games.

It was a great game, but it needs to be tomb raider. It was just too much like Uncharted even though it had some subtle changes. It just tried wayyyyy too hard.

If 'Tomb Raider has nothing to do with Tomb Raider anymoore', then does Uncharted have something to do with the old Tomb Raiders or not? I don't get it.

Uncharted is more like Indiana Jones. Hes a thief who grew up to be a historian and and archeologist/treasure hunter for hire. He focuses on character relationships and quips to create a storybased web for what happens in the game. Tomb Raider tried to do this and it made the game lag (like two hours of the game). Some people just werent interesting enough to go after.

Uncharted has become the series it is today thanks to Sony feeling pressure from the success of Xbox with its 'gritty shooters', an ex-Naughty Dog developer has revealed.

Talking exclusively to Play, Don Poole, former Environment Modeller at Naughty Dog, explains how Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was originally a 'fantasy' game until orders came from Sony to make it more 'realistic'.

"We were talking about a more 'realistic' game in terms of how it was modelled and rendered but the concepts were much more far out. One was a forest world where the antagonists lived underground," explained Poole.

"It had elements of Tolkien in for sure. Sony kept pushing for a more realistic game in all respects. The market had changed a lot by then. The demographic was older and gritty shooters were really dominating. Sony wanted very much to get into that market share, it pushed all of its developers in this direction."

"So the big push from Sony, not just at Naughty Dog but at all of Sony's development companies at the time, was to craft games for PlayStation 3 that were much more realistic. The pressure from Xbox's success with gritty shooters was a very real force on our direction at that time."

We had a lot of internal grumbling about the realist bent. More of the old dogs were from the Crash and Jak era and preferred that more whimsical style. But alas, that was a losing battle."

And still people want MS to fail nextgen... *sigh*

No one wants MS to fail, just make something great outside of shooters.

I'd like to first say that I played both games and I prefer Uncharted, but I don't understand why so many have to prove that Uncharted is better and that Tomb Raider took from it. If people liked Tomb Raider more then that's their opinion why try to change that. And about Tomb Raider taking from Uncharted yes it obviously took a lot but there's nothing wrong with that, everyone does that even Uncharted. It's actually a good thing for us that developers take elements from highly acclaimed games.

Not trying to change anyones opinion. I noticed the game looked like Uncharted a year or so ago and I just finished the game and I realized how close it is to uncharted and I was like "dude there has to be a video capturing how much this game took". Low and behold there was and I found it and decided to show it.

which is odd... since i really can't think of any xbox exclusive that plays like uncharted

you could argue that the cover mechanics are similar to gears... but gears derived its cover mechanics from killswitch anyway

ITT we learn that Uncharted invented fire, platforming, guns, zip lines, tombs, and cameras.

If that is all you can see you have a very narrow mind.

A painting is more than what is seen in the picture.  Like a game is more than a checklist of features.

Funny, I would say the same thing regarding painting being more than the picture to anyone simple minded enough to label Tomb Raider as an Uncharted clone. But please, don't try to defend that hilarious video. Like I said, if you want to take it at face value as the OP did, then Uncharted invented all that plus more. Exploding barrels to, how could I forget. Thanks for that, Uncharted.

Well Eidos had to spend a 100 million dollars to make Tomb Raider come close to the quality of Uncharted. So that's really all that needs to be said.

Again with the last line especially you're just being narrow minded.  Lots of games have cover mechanics, stealth, climbing, gunplay etc.  Uncharted didn't create these but Uncharted had its own style that no other game had, the previous Tomb Raider games had their own style too.  The new TR has ditched the series own style and just copied the style which Uncharted created.

No one is saying Uncharted invented those mechanics except YOU and a few other denying the copying, all you're achieving is proving you're incapable of seperating a checklist of features from style and mechanics.

lol, copied the "style" that Uncharted "created". Please. And with the bolded... you're just making my case for me. I already posted a video showing Tomb Raider modernized in a remake that came out before Uncharted 1 was even released. Yet somehow it's still copying Uncharted style LOL. It's precious. The praise the game has gotten and lack of talk in the media about your supposed copycat theory really seems to bother some people here lol.

I've already posted a developer interview where they go into good detail about the differences, and a video that shows the game modernizing its mechanics before Uncharted even came out. Not going to bother trying to educate the unwilling anymore ;)

Dude did you even play Uncharted? The new TR was definitely inspired by Uncharted how can you not see that?
