Forums - Gaming - What Tomb Raider learned from Uncharted (Videos)

It's pretty obvious that Tomb Raider was influenced a LOT by Uncharted, just like Uncharted was once by Tomb Raider. But already there are people downplaying said influence. Didn't the devs even admit that they looked to Uncharted a lot?

Notice how its mostly the 360 guys doing it. :)

I loved Uncharted, so I welcome games similar to it. Tomb Raider is fantastic, and a fresh game apart from all of the FPS madness lately.

I just finished Tomb Raider yesterday, its not like the old Tomb Raiders, it felt like Uncharted with subtle tweaks in the gameplay. I felt like hunting in that game less than Assassins Creed who also learned from Tomb Raider.

The gun play could have been a lot better in tomb raider the machine gun was just horrible to use

The gun play in TR was fun and crazy but overblown by a large margin. The men are bullet sponges and they are Crystal Dynamics kept reviving men I've killed over and over and over again. Its was killing the men you killed before a thousand times. The kickback in the assault rifle was crazy. That Island really is mystical! As Conan Obrien called it "lawsuit island" because everything around you breaks. Seeing those characters come back really drew me out of the immersion and question the budget Crystal Dynamics had set on characters.

The stories I have about using the shotgun in this game are crazy. This is some nearly immortal ai.

Wow the only thing these two video comparisons have accomplished is reminding me how fucking awesome Uc2 and Uc3 are! sorry Tomb Radier you're just not that good.

Lara has always been "Rambo/McGuyver". Hell in the first game you're dual wielding pistols killing a T-Rex.

Look at this video and tell me the series only just now became about action and cinematics because of Uncharted or something LOL

That's Anniversary, also from Crystal Dynamics :)

LOL if you think that agile, precise lara is the same as the one in the game you've got to be joking. Yeah, I know thats from Crystal Dynamics and they've been at they've been at it for a while. The overhead camera view on lara in the last game was interesting to say the least. It also wasnt believable that she was trained to be this killer she was going to grow up to be. Suddenly three days on an island brings it out of her. Its just not believable to me at least but it was a fun game. The realism route was nice but they know who gave them their ticket to success after over a decade of having a creativity drought. Lara was never an rambo/Mcguyver. Shes always been more of an adventurer with the ability to kill with the precision of an assassin.

I kind of want to go and play Uncharted now.... It did generally look more impressive than Tomb Raider, certainly in terms of the action

Well yeah, because at the time Uncharted had learned from TPS games (like killswitch and winback) and over the shoulder shooters like RE4 the gen before much like Gears and crafted out its own style much like Gears did for itself. It shows you just how much of a standard and later for the majority of Tomb Raider. The video is all the proof you need back to back.

Uncharted has become the series it is today thanks to Sony feeling pressure from the success of Xbox with its 'gritty shooters', an ex-Naughty Dog developer has revealed.

Talking exclusively to Play, Don Poole, former Environment Modeller at Naughty Dog, explains how Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was originally a 'fantasy' game until orders came from Sony to make it more 'realistic'.

"We were talking about a more 'realistic' game in terms of how it was modelled and rendered but the concepts were much more far out. One was a forest world where the antagonists lived underground," explained Poole.

"It had elements of Tolkien in for sure. Sony kept pushing for a more realistic game in all respects. The market had changed a lot by then. The demographic was older and gritty shooters were really dominating. Sony wanted very much to get into that market share, it pushed all of its developers in this direction."

"So the big push from Sony, not just at Naughty Dog but at all of Sony's development companies at the time, was to craft games for PlayStation 3 that were much more realistic. The pressure from Xbox's success with gritty shooters was a very real force on our direction at that time."

We had a lot of internal grumbling about the realist bent. More of the old dogs were from the Crash and Jak era and preferred that more whimsical style. But alas, that was a losing battle."
