Microsoft doesnt bend even for their loyal consumers. If they know they have you hook line and sinker they don't wont change their ways. They only change when the competition beats them. Look at Apple, which inspired Microsoft to turn Windows into an IPod.

You mean like Sony? Competition forced them to lower the price of their $600 machine, improve their online services, and put out better 1st party games. Competition inspired Sony to be a less arrogant company.

The PC business is kinda struggling now that everything is going mobile. So its no surprise Windows is becoming a more mobile friendly OS. And its just not Apple that MS is competing with, Android will eventually trounce the iOS userbase.

I really don't understand your logic sometimes... most times... maybe all the time.

Sony has always taken the financial hit on their Playstations if you dont remember well. Sony had always been working on some form of online. Microsoft brought two things to gaming which was Halo which they took from Apple and they themselves brought online. Everyone brought something different. Sony brought multimedia and made gaming about better tech to push the possibilities of what consoles can do in the home for an affordable price. Left up to Nintendo we would've had Gamecube graphics right about now without competition from Sony or Microsoft.

Windows 8 isn't something everyone wants, so I think this will help Windows 7 sales. :)

MS didn't take Bungie from Apple. Apple wasn't interested and changed their mind after MS got Bungie. And lets be honest, very unlikely it would have worked out this well for Bungie working with Apple.

Sony brought multimedia? The Xbox could play movies and it was the first to bring streaming services like Netflix.

I don't see how the PS3 pushed the possibilities of what consoles could do. I mean Gears of War was an amazing game before PS3 had any killer apps. Sony, MS, and 3rd parties have been raising the bar. You're giving Sony too much credit.

No...Apple was not interested in buying bungie, but just wanted Halo to be made for the Mac. The only way to break the contract Microsoft had to buy Bungie as a studio and once they did the Xbox had its ace in the hole.

The Xbox came out a year behind Sony. Sony brought CD playback and DVD to gaming straight out of the box first. The Xbox followed suit. What do you think cut Sonys marketshare? Duh, they are trying to lure gamers from Sony to them as quickly as possible therefore by having a similar library and way of playing theres few things people have to choose between the two. Outside of online they are essentially the same save for exclusives. Sony caught up with online and thats all they ever really had to do. Would you disagree with that? If I was in the gaming industry and companies had been trying to go for online since the 90's like Sega was over Nintendo I would jump on the opportunity as well. Blu Ray was brought to gaming by Sony and set a standard for how much a disc should hold and as the days go by Blu Rays are holding more and more space. Microsoft WILL follow suit with the format just like Sony followed suit with the winning online strategy. Everyone takes from one another but Sony pushed gaming from the position Nintendo had it and Microsoft and Sony will continue to compete and inspire one another to become better.

The PS3 tried to push power but only did so for exclusives and held back multiplats. That was an off call by Kutaragi plain and simple.

Back to the post,

No Microsoft would not give out free games to compete with PS Plus, they are capitalists. If people are paying them they dont have to budge. I do believe they would give discounts though. Thats a totally different animal and the money they are making off of Xbox Live its pure profit. Fans deserve more 50% sales from them they've made so much more than they truly need as a business.

That's not what I read. From my understanding Bungie was hurting financially and was up for sale. They asked Apple if they were interested but Apple passed. Apple changed their mind later but found out they were sold to MS. That's the story I know!

Okay, you're jumping to last gen in regards to a multimedia console? Well if you wanna go further back there were machines that played games and movies even before Playstation started doing it. Phillips CD-i comes to mind. They used VCD because that was the popular digital format of the time, PS1 and Saturn even had VCD attachments. Sony used DVD for PS2 because that was the popular format of the time, MS followed suit because it was still the popular format of the time. The next Xbox will use Bluray because that is now the popular format and not ridiculously over priced like when Sony put it in PS3 which cost them billions and a huge chunk of market share.

Sony tried to push power? Yet none of their games look out of the 360's realm of capabilities. So the 3rd parties are to blame even though Sony never demonstrated why their hardware is superior? Nice scapegoat.

Ok, Sony has done nothing and set zero standards. Happy now? Lets leave you to your opinion. :)

No. Xbox live is a service, and a very good one at that. PSN Plus is pretty much like a season pass, throwing free games at you doesn't make it any better.

Except it is the same, only people who just pay for live say non true things like this to make LIve not seem like a rip off which it is when the competitions online is the same and free. It's more like one company does it for free while another tricks you into believe It's different and worth paying for.

nobody is tricking anybody lol, it's not a rip-off It's a subscription service like netflix or amazon prime. But I can't say which of the two are superior because it's all about preferences and everybody has their own

In gaming I feel they raised the bar much like other companies have. But I can't say they have done anything incredibly unique.

They got camera motion controls down before anyone. They had the first proper multimedia gaming console which kept ahead of the curve and gained popularity whilst the dreamcast couldnt catch up, Nintendo failed to follow and Microsoft played it smart by using DVDs after. They brought Blu Ray and because of that Microsoft tried to play rebel to the trend setter and tried to help HD DVD but alas...it was a lost cause. They taught the world that videogames were potent electronics and not just toys for children like Nintendo led the world to believe. Without Sony in the gaming industry there would be no Microsoft, there would be no threat of companies leaving PC gaming and they are responsible for the death of Arcades and the boom of home consoles. Sony is the reason people can afford a Blu Ray player at an affordable price just like DVD's. They dont just affect the gaming world they affect the world of electronics. They might not have been the first, but then no one in the gaming industry has either. Nintendo has been sued for patents quite a few time and so has Sony.

Microsoft already gives out free games. I just got The Walking Dead Episode 1 for free, and in the past I've gotten Carcassione, Harm's Way, and Wreckateer.

However they are only free for a limited time, so you kinda have to be on it to get it.

I'll give you the camera thing, I don't recall anything noteworthy prior to Eyetoy.

Sony had the first proper multimedia gaming console? PS2 just had a DVD player. That's no more proper than the CD-i. Sony pushed Bluray because they were looking for money, instead they helped get it off the ground but lost billions in the process.

Sony taught the world that video games weren't just for children? Once again, you're giving Sony way too much credit. Sega and 3rd party studios were releasing games in hopes of appealing to more mature gamers even before Playstation was around. A game called Snatcher is a fine example.

Its amazing how much credit you give Sony. They single handedly inspired Microsoft to make game consoles, crippled PC gaming, killed arcades, and caused the boom of home consoles even though gaming was a growing industry even before Sony got into the picture. Amazing!

Sony is the reason Bluray players became affordable? Is Sony also the reason flat screen televisions became affordable? Is Sony the reason smart phones became affordable? Bluray players would have inevitably became affordable, that's just how technology seems to work even without the help of Sony.

There are some online games coming to XBLA for free download, a'la Happy Wars. There's going to be a free poker tournament game and some sort of MMO.

Speaking of free, I got TWD EP1 for free today, no sub required to play. And 40 happy tickets. :3

Sonys goal was to bring multimedia to gaming. Microsoft saw them as a threat two things (and you can look this up):

1) Their massive gaming multimedia marketshare.

2) Their dominance over third parties and their force vs PC gaming which pretty much laughed at console gaming before the Playstation arrive when they were more vocal. Microsoft joined vowing to save PC gaming and just ended up taking from PC gaming so they could pad out their multimedia endeavors against Sony. They saved nothing.

Sony isnt the reason Flat Screen TV's became affordable. Sony is the initial reason DVD's became affordable in the early 2000's and Blu Ray players. The mass sales of Blu Ray Players and DVD's while they launched their console (and taking the financial hit in both gens). They are responsible for Blu Rays survival and the bedding which made it possible for people to buy them as low as $99 dollars today.

Sony's goal was to bring multimedia to gaming? All they did was put a DVD player in a console. For the 7th gen all they did was put a Bluray player in a console. Sony was focused on physical media and didn't anticipate the boom of downloading and streaming media. MS saw the potential there before Sony and has capitalized on it.

I agree MS saw Sony as a threat. But MS looks at a lot of companies that can potentially take some of their market share as a threat. The problem Sony had in 2006 is they were under the illusion they had no competition and saw no threats

I don't recall MS vowing to save PC gaming, not that I feel it really needed saving per se. The biggest problem PC gaming has had is piracy. But for some genres there is more potential for profit on PC than consoles.

Bluray is about 7 years old now? It would have inevitably became $99 with Sony's help or not. I wish Sony somehow made Bluray movies cheaper. I mean $30-$35 for a new movie? They can go fuck themselves.
