Sonys goal was to bring multimedia to gaming. Microsoft saw them as a threat two things (and you can look this up):

1) Their massive gaming multimedia marketshare.

2) Their dominance over third parties and their force vs PC gaming which pretty much laughed at console gaming before the Playstation arrive when they were more vocal. Microsoft joined vowing to save PC gaming and just ended up taking from PC gaming so they could pad out their multimedia endeavors against Sony. They saved nothing.

Sony isnt the reason Flat Screen TV's became affordable. Sony is the initial reason DVD's became affordable in the early 2000's and Blu Ray players. The mass sales of Blu Ray Players and DVD's while they launched their console (and taking the financial hit in both gens). They are responsible for Blu Rays survival and the bedding which made it possible for people to buy them as low as $99 dollars today.

Sony's goal was to bring multimedia to gaming? All they did was put a DVD player in a console. For the 7th gen all they did was put a Bluray player in a console. Sony was focused on physical media and didn't anticipate the boom of downloading and streaming media. MS saw the potential there before Sony and has capitalized on it.

I agree MS saw Sony as a threat. But MS looks at a lot of companies that can potentially take some of their market share as a threat. The problem Sony had in 2006 is they were under the illusion they had no competition and saw no threats

I don't recall MS vowing to save PC gaming, not that I feel it really needed saving per se. The biggest problem PC gaming has had is piracy. But for some genres there is more potential for profit on PC than consoles.

Bluray is about 7 years old now? It would have inevitably became $99 with Sony's help or not. I wish Sony somehow made Bluray movies cheaper. I mean $30-$35 for a new movie? They can go fuck themselves.

Blu Ray would've gone the way of HD-DVD without Sonys help. Give Sony their due credit. Look it up, HD-DVD was destroying Blu Ray and was primed to be the secondary to DVD's until Sony intervened and took the risk to save Blu Ray in the gaming industry and by the wide spread sales (just liked the PS2) era allowed Blu Ray to sit comfortably at a mass market price that is affordable for everyone even though they bled twice financially to make it happen. The rise of DVD's and Blu Rays happened pretty quickly. Laser Disc and HD-DVD never had that boost the gaming industry gave. Microsoft tried to do the same thing Sony did for Blu Ray but was too late to save HD-DVD, because the sales of PS3's covered the sales of Blu Rays which swallowed up the alternate disc market to DVD's. Now look at your best buy which is pretty much 80% Blu Ray. Yeah, thats all Sony's doing.

I really feel Bluray was going to win the format war regardless of PS3. It had a lot more support. But why does it matter? Bluray is the leader of dying market. Physical movie sales are down significantly since the rise of downloading and streaming media.

Sony and the Playstation brand would have been better off sticking with DVD. That would have saved Sony billions of dollars and the Xbox brand wouldn't have become so strong.

Do you think there will even be a format war for new discs to go with our 4K televisions? Physcial media sales will be even lower by then.

Blu Ray wouldve had died had Sony not taken the nose dive for it. Again, look it up. Who cares whether one thinks its a dying market? Sony is responsible for the last generation survival of possibly the last disc based media.

I thank them for that, because I love all the extras on Blu Rays. Practically my whole DVD collection is Blu Ray now and thanks to my PS3 I never had to pay nearly six hundred to a grand to buy even the cheapest Blu Ray back before the PS3 came out. I didnt touch Blu Ray until I could afford a PS3 myself and that was in 2009. Ever since then I have not turned back. I have a five movie combo on one Blu Ray that I bought at Best Buy. Thank goodness for them that I can do so much on one disc. I mean its not life changing, but its great not to have to swap discs with my gaming and now even with my movies.

Sony has never made a format war for 4k televisions because you cant put that into the box and expect people to buy that. Sony is going to have to wait until the market price for those TV's goes down (As DVD or Blu Ray would've had to do without their intervention). Sony has made TV's specifically for gaming but they've left that up to you to buy. They've been using the formats since the original Playstation, most notably the one the one Kutaragi was paid by Nintendo to make but have been making those formats mass market through gaming consoles since 2001 with the PS2.

No. Xbox live is a service, and a very good one at that. PSN Plus is pretty much like a season pass, throwing free games at you doesn't make it any better.

Except it is the same, only people who just pay for live say non true things like this to make LIve not seem like a rip off which it is when the competitions online is the same and free. It's more like one company does it for free while another tricks you into believe It's different and worth paying for.

I'm going to interject here for just a second because your statement about how these two things are the same and how one is tricking people into paying for it is the major problem currently in this industry and one that needs to get resolved.  A service costs money, it's not free, it has actual costs in the form of employees, hardware, maintence, and so on.  Microsoft, love them or hate them, is providing a service and is correctly charging for that service.  Sony made a huge mistake when they created a service, PSN, and chose not to charge for it instead eating those costs at the expense of quality.  Now Sony is starting to realize why MS charges for Live and they have created their own pay for service PSN+ and yes they actually expect you to pay for it.  And I think they have done a really good job at getting their brand out there, part of which is giving away some good games and this will continue until they can get more maket share, but don't kid yourself into thinking that all that free milk Sony is giving away isn't for an inteded purpose of getting you to use their service that you will pay for where they can correctly profit for the service they provide.

Nothing pisses me off more than people that say a service should be free. It's simple if you can't charge for your product then you are not in business.
