In gaming I feel they raised the bar much like other companies have. But I can't say they have done anything incredibly unique.


They got camera motion controls down before anyone. They had the first proper multimedia gaming console which kept ahead of the curve and gained popularity whilst the dreamcast couldnt catch up, Nintendo failed to follow and Microsoft played it smart by using DVDs after. They brought Blu Ray and because of that Microsoft tried to play rebel to the trend setter and tried to help HD DVD but alas...it was a lost cause. They taught the world that videogames were potent electronics and not just toys for children like Nintendo led the world to believe. Without Sony in the gaming industry there would be no Microsoft, there would be no threat of companies leaving PC gaming and they are responsible for the death of Arcades and the boom of home consoles. Sony is the reason people can afford a Blu Ray player at an affordable price just like DVD's. They dont just affect the gaming world they affect the world of electronics.They might not have been the first, but then no one in the gaming industry has either. Nintendo has been sued for patents quite a few time and so has Sony. 

I'll give you the camera thing, I don't recall anything noteworthy prior to Eyetoy.

Sony had the first proper multimedia gaming console? PS2 just had a DVD player. That's no more proper than the CD-i. Sony pushed Bluray because they were looking for money, instead they helped get it off the ground but lost billions in the process.

Sony taught the world that video games weren't just for children? Once again, you're giving Sony way too much credit. Sega and 3rd party studios were releasing games in hopes of appealing to more mature gamers even before Playstation was around. A game called Snatcher is a fine example.

Its amazing how much credit you give Sony. They single handedly inspired Microsoft to make game consoles, crippled PC gaming, killed arcades, and caused the boom of home consoles even though gaming was a growing industry even before Sony got into the picture. Amazing!

Sony is the reason Bluray players became affordable? Is Sony also the reason flat screen televisions became affordable? Is Sony the reason smart phones became affordable? Bluray players would have inevitably became affordable, that's just how technology seems to work even without the help of Sony.


Sonys goal was to bring multimedia to gaming. Microsoft saw them as a threat two things (and you can look this up):

1) Their massive gaming multimedia marketshare.

2) Their dominance over third parties and their force vs PC gaming which pretty much laughed at console gaming before the Playstation arrive when they were more vocal. Microsoft joined vowing to save PC gaming and just ended up taking from PC gaming so they could pad out their multimedia endeavors against Sony. They saved nothing.

Sony isnt the reason Flat Screen TV's became affordable. Sony is the initial reason DVD's became affordable in the early 2000's and Blu Ray players. The mass sales of Blu Ray Players and DVD's while they launched their console (and taking the financial hit in both gens). They are responsible for Blu Rays survival and the bedding which made it possible for people to buy them as low as $99 dollars today.
