You mean like Sony? Competition forced them to lower the price of their $600 machine, improve their online services, and put out better 1st party games. Competition inspired Sony to be a less arrogant company.
The PC business is kinda struggling now that everything is going mobile. So its no surprise Windows is becoming a more mobile friendly OS. And its just not Apple that MS is competing with, Android will eventually trounce the iOS userbase.

Sony has always taken the financial hit on their Playstations if you dont remember well. Sony had always been working on some form of online. Microsoft brought two things to gaming which was Halo which they took from Apple and they themselves brought online. Everyone brought something different. Sony brought multimedia and made gaming about better tech to push the possibilities of what consoles can do in the home for an affordable price. Left up to Nintendo we would've had Gamecube graphics right about now without competition from Sony or Microsoft.
Windows 8 isn't something everyone wants, so I think this will help Windows 7 sales. :)

MS didn't take Bungie from Apple. Apple wasn't interested and changed their mind after MS got Bungie. And lets be honest, very unlikely it would have worked out this well for Bungie working with Apple.
Sony brought multimedia? The Xbox could play movies and it was the first to bring streaming services like Netflix.
I don't see how the PS3 pushed the possibilities of what consoles could do. I mean Gears of War was an amazing game before PS3 had any killer apps. Sony, MS, and 3rd parties have been raising the bar. You're giving Sony too much credit.

No...Apple was not interested in buying bungie, but just wanted Halo to be made for the Mac. The only way to break the contract Microsoft had to buy Bungie as a studio and once they did the Xbox had its ace in the hole.
The Xbox came out a year behind Sony. Sony brought CD playback and DVD to gaming straight out of the box first. The Xbox followed suit. What do you think cut Sonys marketshare? Duh, they are trying to lure gamers from Sony to them as quickly as possible therefore by having a similar library and way of playing theres few things people have to choose between the two. Outside of online they are essentially the same save for exclusives. Sony caught up with online and thats all they ever really had to do. Would you disagree with that? If I was in the gaming industry and companies had been trying to go for online since the 90's like Sega was over Nintendo I would jump on the opportunity as well. Blu Ray was brought to gaming by Sony and set a standard for how much a disc should hold and as the days go by Blu Rays are holding more and more space. Microsoft WILL follow suit with the format just like Sony followed suit with the winning online strategy. Everyone takes from one another but Sony pushed gaming from the position Nintendo had it and Microsoft and Sony will continue to compete and inspire one another to become better.
The PS3 tried to push power but only did so for exclusives and held back multiplats. That was an off call by Kutaragi plain and simple.

No Microsoft would not give out free games to compete with PS Plus, they are capitalists. If people are paying them they dont have to budge. I do believe they would give discounts though. Thats a totally different animal and the money they are making off of Xbox Live its pure profit. Fans deserve more 50% sales from them they've made so much more than they truly need as a business.

That's not what I read. From my understanding Bungie was hurting financially and was up for sale. They asked Apple if they were interested but Apple passed. Apple changed their mind later but found out they were sold to MS. That's the story I know!
Okay, you're jumping to last gen in regards to a multimedia console? Well if you wanna go further back there were machines that played games and movies even before Playstation started doing it. Phillips CD-i comes to mind. They used VCD because that was the popular digital format of the time, PS1 and Saturn even had VCD attachments. Sony used DVD for PS2 because that was the popular format of the time, MS followed suit because it was still the popular format of the time. The next Xbox will use Bluray because that is now the popular format and not ridiculously over priced like when Sony put it in PS3 which cost them billions and a huge chunk of market share.
Sony tried to push power? Yet none of their games look out of the 360's realm of capabilities. So the 3rd parties are to blame even though Sony never demonstrated why their hardware is superior? Nice scapegoat.
