Forums - Nintendo - The Problem With the Wii U is the Wii

This is one of my own little theories, but I think that Nintendo needs to stop giving their systems such similar names at such a high frequency. It confuses people.

For example: The DS has so many different versions. The DS, DS Lite, DSi, and DSi XL are all the same system. Then they come out with the 3DS and expect people to automatically know that its a completely different system.

I bring this up because so far 2 people I know (dad and a friend) thought that the Wii U was a tablet add-on for the Wii. My friend played with the Wii U and thought it was awesome, and when we went to Gamestop the next day he was surprised that a tablet add-on cost $300.

Sony fanboys are butt hurt because Nintendo kicked their ass three time in a row, now they became advisers, advising what wrong with Nintendo.
They're too transparent it's not even funny

In case of endlessly repeated lie about 3rd party support, the truth is with handful of exceptions Nintendo success or failure was never dependent on 3rd party support, neither NES nor SNES nor any other Nintendo console or handheld dependent on them (the only exceptions were SQUARE, Enix and Capcom)

Its well known fact, the biggest assets of Nintendo are their abilities to build their own identity, this is of course unacceptable and hard to swallow for most so called hardcore gamers because their confidence depend on herd instinct (this instinct, herd instinct was introduced by Sega) to this day every single of their argument is build upon one basic foundation "Genesis does what Nintendon't" and Blast Processing.

So if Nintendo discontinued the Wii, would Wii U be saved?

no nintendo shot themselves in the foot by not making any good titles for the main userbase of the Wii leading up to the launch of the Wii U therefore people don't want to buy the Wii U in fear that they wouldn't use it.

You nailed it. That's exactly what I believe.

I completely agree. The Wii is something people bought or received as a gift, but rarely gets used. Wii U sales are proof of that. I expect the same thing to happen with the next Kinect.

As I type this out on my WII U, I can't help but agree. The Wii ruined Nintendo's reputation.

NES ruined Nintendo reputation too?

Did the NES all but abandon gamers for grandmas instead? Sure Nintendo made tons of money but they also pushed away a lot of their fans. Now they are returning to core market yet most of us aren't convinced they have. At the same time the Wii U is trying to be more than wiggle-crap so grandmas and casuals don't want it either. Therefor only hardcore gamers and Nintendo fanboys are buying it right now.

Yes you're spot on, the bad aftertaste off the Wii is definitely hurting Wii-U sales. That's why supporting a system after you launch it's successor is so important, Sony is the only one who seems to realise that and that's why PS3 is still selling pretty reasonable. Sony has done a lot of things wrong this generation but that's one thing they do right.

The problem with the Wii U sales isn't something that simple. But its close. The main reason is the economy and the "free market". People will only pay as much as the market can bear, and right now with the conditions that are currently going on in the US and Europe buying a new system that has a over $300 price tag isn't something they can just go out and do. And with the problems that the sequester program cuts are going to cause their ability to buy luxury impulse items such as game systems is just going to diminish.

And when it comes down to whether they will buy the new Smart phone/iPad or a new game system, the Smart phone will probably win. Because luxury items are usually meant to show off, and it is easier to show off a phone you have with you and not a system. (Because that is just the way the mass market works.)

So it isn't just the Wii and Nintendo handling of the Wii's software, it is also the 360 and the PS3. Because most who are looking to get a game system who are not consider a system's "core" base, or those who will buy the new system no matter what, they will look at the new system and see an expensive system with a few expensive games, usually sitting next to the older cheaper system, with a ton of games ranging from a few dollars to $60, and some of those games make up a good percentage of the new system's library. Now what you you get go out $600 and only get a system, and at most 3 or four games. Or spend $400 and get a system and the same, or in their mind comparable, games. (Because in most non-core gamers mind there isn't that much of a difference in squeals, so they will prefer to pick up the Killzone compilation in favor for the lure of a new Killzone on the PS4)

So you can view what is currently happening to the Wii U as a portent was what the market is going to be like for the PS4 and the next Xbox. You will have your cores buying up the system during the first few months on the market and then the sales will go down to a trickle. Because your average customer will not be interested in getting the latest and greatest if there is a cheaper alternative on the shelves, with a bigger library and the "same games" out on the older machine.

Also the case of no backwards compatibility is going to play a difference in the first year of the machines lives, especially if some of the titles are going to be $70 like Patcher is contending. (Even though he isn't correct usually, but even a blind man can get a bulls eye if he throws enough darts.)

As for the core not all will adopt the new machines, Kotaku recently put up the results of a survey which concluded only 29% of those who consider themselves core, probally by how much they play and buy for the machines, will be first adopters. Which is the feeling I get when I go to different boards and see comments like "Very nice machine, I will get it once the price drops to $250." It seems $250-to-$300 is going to be the magical number this generation, because that is the price most are drop some are saying $350, and less are $400 and above. (I consider those are the core who will buy no matter what.)

So I would say after that there is two things Nintendo needs to do, one a price cut, we already see they are doing something like that with the ZombieU bundle, more 1st party games and a bigger library. Then they will go on the upswing, and probably will become a barrier for the new console to get over in 2014.

That's not true. The majority of PS3 sales were made at $300+
Of course the lower the price, the better but people will pay for a $300+ console. PS3 in particular is proof of that. Also with the next gen, there will be more free to play games than there ever were this gen. People will be more likely to pay for an expensive console is they feel they get their moneys worth.

Nintendo fans abandoned Nintendo because of Wii is complete nonsense, who are those fans who left Nintendo, or better fans of Nintendo abandoned them for what Call of Duty, Uncharted or Halo, the only platform abandoned by their supporters is Vita abandoned by PSP crowd and PSP was platform aimed at hardcore gamers.

The truth is Playstation fans are interested in one thing cool factor, they're the same stock who abandoned Sega Dreamcast for Playstation 2 and now they ignoring Vita for iPad

This is why most Sony 1st party games are only moderate succes, even badly ported games on Playstation 3 as Skyrim sells better than most 1st party games, and even on Vita the 2nd besteslling game is actually horrible version of CoD.

Skyrim was cool, CoD is cool even as bad game the brand is cool enough for Playstation crowd and this is all what matter for them

The problem with the Wii U = FALSE

Starting with that true, I can say to you that the problem with the third parties will be solved when Nintendo, again, go to the rescue of the console. And then: 10/10, 40/40,... you know, Nintendo games.

Are you to young to not see that the third companies abandoned Nintendo since PS is here? Playstation IS the problem, the problem of the videogame industry.

Feel free to report me for this but that is one of the most childish thing I ever read in this forum. Nintendo's relationship with 3rd parties is solely their responsibility and PlayStation brand didn't keep the Xbox 360 from thriving this current generation so don't make lame excuses.

If you deny the evil conspiracy, you are part of it!

Sounds like you are a bad salesman. You should have countered that statement by saying that that's why people buy more games for their system and if they ever need advice on new game purchases, then you or a co-worker will be there to help them. Nobody keeps playing the same one or two games forever.

HAHA no, im not saying i'm the best salesman but i'm better than mst people I work with.  The thing is what game(s) with lasting value should a family with an 11 year old girl and an 8 year old boy have bought in the last year? The games they said they had for the Wii were Mario Bros. wii, Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports, Just dance 3, and some Disney Princess game.

You can think like a "hardcore" gamer when you deal with people who bought a system because it had a disney princess game their daughter wanted.

How about Mario Kart or Animal Crossing? It really isn't hard to think of additional quality games suited for their tastes when all they own is five games. It will also be irrelevant to them that these games came out years ago. At the same time it doesn't matter to such people that Nintendo abandoned the Wii; they don't even know about it.

It really sounds like you aren't interested in doing your job as a salesman and if it's true that you are better than most people you work with, then it's no wonder that less dedicated consumers are dropping out of the console market. Apparently they don't get any real help.

Fist of all you have no right to criticize my sales skills without actually being there for the entire interaction. What I gave was a breif overview of the conversation.

You don't think I brought them over to the Wii games and have them point out to me which games they had then ask them why they haven't bought X or Y?  Whenever I pointed out games like MK, Donky Kong, Sonic Colors, or Zelda mom would say " they don't like those games" and I would ask " how do you know if they havent played them?" to which her stupid response was "because i'm their mother". So i Grabbed Sonic Colors because it was only like $15 and asked the kids if they would want to play it. The boy said yes but the girl said no. The girl just wanted more Disney games but the mother kept saying that it isn't worth buying them games she doesn't see them liking blah blah blah.

So look I don't just ask people if they want to buy stuff and leave. If they just want a game i go with them to the say PS3 games aisle and ask them what games they like and recommend games of that nature. If they are looking into systems you always ask if this is there first system, what games they enjoy, and who is the main user going to be. Then you bring them to the demo unit of the console that suites their needs the most, give them the rundown on what features the system has, and let them play it first hand. Lastly you show them what games are offerd on the system of their choice and what accessories would help make the system more enjoyable.

So as you can see I do in fact help people and give them an experience that they can't get with just buying online or ESPECIALLY going to Gamestop. Ohhh the mess Gamestop can cause. They had a guy convinced that the Wii U Gamepad could be played anywhere even in the car.

Dude, it wasn't your fault.  The other guy is just getting defensive and defending is console of choice.  The fact is, I agree with everything you said.  People just see it as another Wii, and it doesn't play games well enough to really distinguish itself from the name.
