Forums - Nintendo - The Problem With the Wii U is the Wii

I semi-agree, though I would say the problem with the Wii U is the LATER years of Wii..

I definitly think people's trust in Nintendo has been shaken after the last couple years of the Wii what with the brutal dry spells. Hell even me, a lifelong Nintendo fan, isn't even considering buying a Wii U until at least the end of the year, and I've only JUST purchased a 3DS. Part of that is the lack of third parties but not all of it. Nintendo simply stopped making games for Wii far too early IMO. After NSMB Wii in 09, there really wasn't a whole lot else.

However, all hope is not lost. If Nintendo cranks out enough games, sort of like they are currently with 3DS, eventually the consumers will follow. They need to focus less on 3DS, as it's got a sufficient amount of games and third parties are stronger there, and focus WAY more on Wii U. They also need to focus on landing some more 2nd party stuff to help fill in the gaps, similar to Xenoblade, Last Story, Retro, etc. I think third parties are too stubborn and scared of going up against Nintendo games so that's not really an option at this point, but I do think they can do a lot more than they are doing as far as 2nd party software.

That's not true. After NSMB Wii in 2009, there were many good games for the Wii, like Super Mario Galaxy 2, Monster Hunter Tri, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, No More Heroes 2, Kirby's Epic Yarn and GoldenEye 007. But it's true that Nintendo stopped making games for the Wii relatively early (I think in 2011).

I agree. Nintendo let people down by not supporting Wii throughout its life and people got burned and don't want to risk buying Wii U. I know that's how I feel. I have 10 Nintendo consoles and 50-100 games and the money to buy a Wii U plus games, AND Wii U is guaranteed to recieve games I want to play (NSMB U, MK, SSB) yet I haven't bought it purely on being burned by later Wii and especially my day 1 3DS purchase.

It takes time to build a good reputation with customers back up again.

This. Ninty "killed" Wii far too early. Doing it actually almost killed the Wii name itself, so it made it a lot less attractive, and useless or even counterproductive to use it again in its successor's name. OTOH Nintendo games still rule, but this time they must fight against a console name tha has become tarnished.

I really think Nintendo and the Wii are trapped in a paradox of their own making. Hardcore gamers scorn them after the way they percieved their brands to be tarnished on Wii by trying to make them more casual and the casual gamers cant really figure out if WiiU is an upgrade or a new gimmick. It needs time and GAMES to identify itself.

I think 3rd party support has been cruel but at the same time why should they risk jobs on a WiiU venture that is likely to bomb? WiiU was unveiled too early and developers are holding off to see what microsft and sony offer before placing their bets - and its this dilly dallying that is hurting the WiiU.

I want to love the WiiU - just as I grew to love the Wii in its later years when it gave me Skyward Sword - but Nintendo must make the first move and give me something before sony or microsoft beat them to my wallet.

It´s completely baffling a game like Pikmin 3 doesn´t even have a release date. These horrible dry spells have been the worst thing about Nintendo home consoles ever since the N64.

I understand making a good game takes time, but there must be something really wrong if Pikmin 3 doesn´t even have a frickin release date.

So salesmen have finally discovered what we have been predicting months before the release of the Wii U. The casuals have moved on to mobiles and tablets and are no longer interested in consoles. Better late than never I guess...

Taking the word of one salesperson and using it for a broad statement for all salespeople seems a little ridiculous.

Also if the casuals are no longer interested in consoles, then expect a gaming crash bigger than the one from the 80's.

Yes, barbie and Disney princesses games are doomed!

Seriously it's not like casuals support their systems with lots of software purchases. At most you'll see a drop in sales numbers for casual, party and dancing games.

Nintendo core gamers will keep buying the console and every single 1st party game but the hardware sales won't get a push from casuals until an atractive price point is reached in 2 or 3 years and the game library gets bigger.

Wii got a big sales push when it got under 200 if I recall correctly.

No, you have identified the reason in your post.

Sales were amazing when the WiiU launched
Mario was released at the WiiU launch

Sales are bad recently
Mario has not be released recently.

Lets get some pattern recognition going.

The problem with the Wii U = FALSE

Starting with that true, I can say to you that the problem with the third parties will be solved when Nintendo, again, go to the rescue of the console. And then: 10/10, 40/40,... you know, Nintendo games.

Are you to young to not see that the third companies abandoned Nintendo since PS is here? Playstation IS the problem, the problem of the videogame industry.

As I type this out on my WII U, I can't help but agree. The Wii ruined Nintendo's reputation.

NES ruined Nintendo reputation too?

Feel free to report me for this but that is one of the most childish thing I ever read in this forum. Nintendo's relationship with 3rd parties is solely their responsibility and PlayStation brand didn't keep the Xbox 360 from thriving this current generation so don't make lame excuses.

Well, it is true that people often have short-term memories. Luckily, it works both ways.

Release some games and people will buy it.
