Forums - Gaming - What would you do if Sony got out of the gaming industry?

I would do the same thing I did last gen, which is buy a Nintendo and a Microsoft console.  Wii U is out already, and I have it, so I'm halfway there anyway.  I just hope Microsoft's next console offering is better manufactured.

It makes a lot of sense to me and many other SEGA fans who chose Nintendo & Microsoft consoles after SEGA's console demise.

SEGA's own mistakes aside (which SEGA could not afford to recover from, unlike some "big corporations") a lot of SEGA fans still blame sony.

Sony initially had NOTHING in terms of quality first party studio's, they BOUGHT their way in to this business, moneyhatted games galore, and literally spent billions of their corperate money advertising the ps1 everywhere under the sun.

That's why im still baffled by the sony fans who hate microsoft, especially when BOTH companies had fook all to do with gaming as their primary business before entering the market.

Nintendo & SEGA from day 1 had a tonne of first party studios, and were in this business for the right reasons, the seedy way in which sony entered the gaming world will forever leave a bitter taste in my mouth. basically as mentioned before they MONEYHATTED 3rd party exclusives due to having NOTHING by way of quality FIRST party games and then proceeded to splash the cash, muscle, hustle and BUY their way to the top.

Then why don't you hate Microsoft as well when you've just implied that they did the same thing?

Also, I think you're using "moneyhatting" as an excuse as to why SONY came in so strong with the PS1, both SEGA and Nintendo really dropped the ball at the same time there was an explosion in the gaming industry, all of those new IPs and studios would have sided with SONY. The same thing happened with the Xbox 360 this gen. There is nothing wrong with funding 3rd party exclusive and buying new IPs in my opinion. Moneyhatting exclusives from another system is the only real dick move. Other than Final Fantasy, can you name any other franchise that exclusive to another console that was "stolen"? I'm not saying you can't, I just don't think you'd find many.

Totally agree here.  I never understood why alot of Sega fans flocked to MS.  They aren't remotely similar IMO.  I loved Sega but strongly dislike the Xbox / 360.  I don't if I'm the only one.  Then again, I care more about what the company puts out in terms of projects rather than all this loyalty bullshit.  I know I'm one of the few on this site that likes both Nintendo and Sony, but not MS.  My dislike for Xbox has little to do with MS as a company, but the products they put out and what it did to the gaming industry.

pretty much exactly my thoughts.  Every time I say I like Sony or don't like MS people take that as I hate Nintendo just as much which is 100% not the case.  Love them both.

That's the thing.  Outside of the internet (IRL) and besides the three years all the Wii hype was going on, most Sony and Nintendo fans respect each other's consoles for the games it has on it.  MS is on its own and most of their fans don't like Nintendo or Sony because it's not suited for shooters and online like MS.

Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. Butthurt at Sony (80%), and the fact that Sega put a bunch of games on Xbox until they all flopped and they had to focus on other, more viable platforms (20%). That was always my impression, anyway.

Now most of the "Sega-like" games are exclusive to Sony's console like Valkyria and Yakuza.  They don't do well with the general Xbox fanbase I suppose.  I'm not exactly sure that because I liked Sega (and Nintendo / Sony) back in the day, meant that I had to become an Xbox fan and like Halo / Gears.  It's nothing remotely the same.  I think it must be an Internet thing where fans keep track of drama between console manufacturers and focus less on the games.

I would hope that Square Enix chooses Nintendo over Microsoft.

I'm sure they'd go for iOS instead.

OT: I'd probably lose a lot of interest in gaming, as my preferred "style" of gaming would be gone. I may jump ship to Microsoft but only if they stop charging for online and don't bundle it with Kinect, if not, it'd probably be Wii U. PC will probably take over as my main gaming machine though.

...Or I may not get into next-gen gaming at all (I'm even considering this now) and I'll become one of those retro gamers with their own Youtube channel.

If Sony left the video game business they would sell off all their gaming IPs and developers. MS would probably buy up some like Naughty Dog and EA and Activision would buy up others. I could see Nintendo buying Media Molecule and some family friendly IPs like Ape Escape. My point is that your "preferred style" of gaming wouldn't be gone, it would just find other platforms to exist on. Take for example THQ. It died, but it's game's will live on.

It would be a shame, as competition improves the industry, but I wouldn't lose interest in gaming or anything. I was happy owning just an Xbox and a Wii this gen.

Agreed.  3DS numbers are looking quite sexy but seeing the Vita flop around is quite dishearting.  Plus it would give the smartphone/tablet industry more fuel for their "Dedicated Handheld Gaming is DEAD" arguements.

Yeah, although I have no interest in ever getting a Vita, I'm sad to see it doing so badly because it means less competition.

It'd definitely be split over two platforms though. I would probably get both the Wii U and 720, a Western console and a Japanese console, but I'd still miss having it all on one platform along with the controller and features of a Playstation console.

The Playstation has a great library, but it hardly has it "all". Halo and Zelda are worth owning MS and Nintendo consoles alone and that's just the tip of the iceburg of reasons to own all consoles.

When you game on them all you don't really care what platform the games are on. I personly wouldn't not mind at all if all three got together and agreed on a single console. It would make my life easier and my wallet heavier.
