Forums - Gaming Discussion - What would you do if Sony got out of the gaming industry?

Atari left, life went on, SEGA left, life went on, if sony leaves, life will go on.

Nintendo & Microsoft would fill any void left, (another company will likely join the console race in sonys place) and sonys games would go third party.

Wouldn't bother me as I mainly like 3rd party games anyway. I'm not really a loyalist to any brand and I can live without most of sony's exclusives.

Be pretty bummed, but I'm primarily an Xbox guy now anyways, although I do own every Sony console except Vita.

It's ridiculous to say that Sony's presence isn't affecting my experience at all, though. It is, in a number of ways. For one, Sony doing this stuff may push Nintendo to follow similar strategies, which means that Nintendo might not offer the kind of stuff I like. Also, as long as Sony is a dominant force in the industry, third parties will be more inclined to make the kinds of games that I don't like and will focus their efforts away from Nintendo consoles, both of which negatively impact me. Plus, competition drives Nintendo to do much worse, in my experience, so Sony's presence is just distracting Nintendo from entertaining me. There's about a million other reasons why.

I see. For me, it sounds like Sony isn't the direct cause of your problem. Instead, it's how Nintendo and 3rd parties respond to Sony's actions. And that really should be more of a problem with Nintendo and 3rd parties. Sony's actions don't inherently or directly cause harm to you; its how other companies respond to them. In fact, you would be  fine with Sony’s action if it weren’t for how Nintendo and 3rd parties's lack of integity and/or competence. I think that's telling of what your true problem actually is.

This is similar to the argument people use to justify hating Call of Duty. They say they dislike Call of Duty because it inspires other companies to release similar, casual games. Well this doesn't make sense as it is not Call of Duty's or Activision's fault that other companies lack the integrity and/or skill to make their own original successful games.

Now you could agree with above, yet still find it beneficial if Sony left because they would no longer indirectly harm yourself. They’re actions are part of a cause-and-effect cycle that eventually ends with you having a worsened experience. That’s understandable, but if you really want to go up the cause-and-effect cycle, away from the direct cause (Nintendo's/3rd parties actions) to an indirect cause (Sony's actions), then you might as well go all the way up to the root cause which is deeper Sony’s actions.

Sony's actions are just the effect of the demand of a particular segment of the market. Sony’s purpose and mere existence relies on meeting the demands of a sufficient amount of costumers. Because Sony’s actions are just an effect of a deeper, root cause, then there’s no point in being happy if Sony left the business. If Sony were gone, the market that they used to cater to wouldn't just silently vanish. They would still exist and Sony’s exit would be replaced by a new company, continuing the cycle leaving you with a worsened experience.

In summary, the only way you wouldn’t end up with a worsened experience is if the root cause (gamers that enjoy Sony's products) or the direct cause (Nintendo/3rd party actions) of this cycle vanished. If Sony vanished, your situation would probably stay the same for the most part.

@ ClassicGamingWizz.

When SEGA left, i continued console & handheld gaming (yes, even on sony devices like the ps2 & psp).

There was no sudden urge to "go pc only" and i certainly never considered quitting gaming.

As for hurting sony........... lots of "so called" gamers who had the opportunity to but never bought the Saturn or Dreamcast hung SEGA out to dry, so why should i show any remorse for sony?

yeah a lot of people didn't buy Dreamcast or Saturn because we were more interested in other consoles and their exclusives more.  I didn't, and I don't know anyone who did, hate SEGA and buy those 2 second hand and 30 games for them just to hurt SEGA.  Hell i even buy Nintendo first party games new and they overcharge for those damn things even when they're from 07 or 08

I am sure that most if not all of the now Ps3 Fanboys would get an Xbox than and it would not make a real difference. The successful Sony IPs would anyway still farther exist either other publishers like EA, and Activisoin would buy their IPs and Studios like it was the case with THQ a few weeks ago, or Sony would keep their IPs and goes the way to become a publisher for their own like Sega does after their Dreamcast end.

So i am sure after a few months of crying it would not matter for the former Sony fans anymore.

I would rather Nintendo go third party.  I don't want to pay for online but I want the hardware to be powerful for these new IPs to be as big and bad as possible.  I also would hate xbox because if Sony ever did leave the games industry it would probably be because of MS.  If Nintendo went third party and brought their franchises to Playstation though...the universe might explode with awesomeness.  New Sony IPs every gen full of story and variety and epic scale pushing the hardware while Nintendo brings those beloved money makers with mechanics polished over 20 years to near perfection onto the system.  It could outdo even the mighty PS2 if that happened.

I would buy a lot less games that's for sure. I would game on my pc a lot more if Sony left. I buy nintendo when they go cheap and m$ just doesn't offer enough exclusives for me to purchase a console from them.

More or less an exclusive pc gamer

Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!

Killzone 2. its not a fps. it a FIRST PERSON WAR SIMULATOR!!!! ..The true PLAYSTATION 3 launch date and market dominations is SEP 1st

Quit gaming......I've already tired to quit gaming so many times but playstation has kept me from doing that.

Not sure really.
I would probably loose a lot of interest. I wouldn't go to Nintendo all out but I would probs just own a 3DS and play every PS3 game. MS don't have an IPs that I'm interested in plus I won't be paying to use my own Internet connection. I would hope this doesn't happen
