Forums - Nintendo - Is Pokemon going a generation too far?

January 28, 2013 by

A Little History October 2013 will be the month of the release of a new Pokemon generation after seventeen years of hard work for the creators of Pokemon. The Pokemon franchise all started back when Satoshi Tajiri was a young child, playing with insects and tadpoles near his suburban house set in Tokyo, Japan. Over time, Satoshi became interested in writing for kids. Satoshi went to several friends of his for help on his new project. The original name for this project is "Capsule Monsters", but due to trademarking issues, it was changed to "Pocket" Monsters. He, then applied his love for bugs and interest in children's writing together, and out came Pokemon. Through-out the Generations The Pokemon series is composed of generations. Through-out the years, the series had accumulated six generations of Pokemon. Each generation sets the creatures in a different region, with new Pokemon, new towns, and new people. For instance, the first season is set in the Kanto Region, the next season is Johto Region, etc. As the anime progressed, Game Freak concluded that they should include movies into their franchise of money-making. Game Freak raked in over 163 million dollars just from their first movie's box office sales. After the addition of another 150 Pokemon, many became uninterested in any other season but the first. Others stuck around longer, but lost interest  after season three. Though, the anime isn't doing so great, many long-time Pokemon fans still play the new releases of Pokemon games. The reason for this is the anime is corny and uninteresting, while the game is kept a mystery to gamers because all can't wait to find out what Pokemon you'll run into next. Not only that, but many like the sensation of their Pokemon evolving, because they raised it like it was their own baby already getting ready for war. This leads us to the question: Is Pokemon being taken a generation too far? Many say that Game Freak is taking Pokemon too far, because it looks like they are running out of ideas for these critters.

Let's Talk: Generation Six Since, generation six (or, Pokemon X and Y) is not being released until October of this year, neither Game Freak, nor Nintendo has released much information on the Pokemon and their evolutions. Here is a description of each of the five Pokemon announced. Note: It would be best for anybody searching "Pokemon X" specifically, to search Pokemon generation six instead, or search up both versions together, so you do not receive any inappropriate content. The Starters Chespin: Chespin is likely to be number 001 on the region pokedex, and is a grass type. (By traditional standards, grass starter is numbered first, then fire, then water)  This little chipmunk has a tiny, shiny nose, a hat-like object made of leaves, cute oval-shaped eyes and a brown body. (composed of two shades) Chespin looks like the happy-go-lucky- tyoe of Pokemon, and is translated as ハリマロンor Harimaron in Japanese. The name is a combination between chestnut and pin. It may also be from urchin (an old term for hedgehog), chinkapin (the name of some species of chestnuts), and spina (Latin for thorn). The Japanese origin of the name, Chespin is a combination of harinezumi (hedgehog), hari (needle), and marron (French for chestnut).

Fennekin: Fennekin is likely to be number 004 on the region pokedex, and is a fire type. Fennekin is a fluffy fox, with red fur in and coming out of its ears, red caddy eyes, and a caddy tail to go along with its caddy walk. The name, Fennekin is translated to フォッコ or Fokko, in Japanese. Fennekin is based on a Fennec fox. The term, fennec fox means small nocturnal fox found in the Sahara of North Africa. Fennekin may be a combination of fennec and kindle. The word, kindle means to start a fire. The Japanese word, origin may have come from the word, fox, fuoco (Italian for fire), 狐 ko (fox), and 子 ko (child).

Froakie: Froakie is more than likely to end up as number 007 on the region pokedex, and is a water type. Froakie is a blue, frog-like creature,  who looks as if it has white fluffy and cloud-like hair growing along its back and chin. Froakie also seems to have an odd nose. as it has two white circles beneath a blue, tribe-like symbol, on the top of its forehead. Its eyes pop out greatly, similar to the other two starters. Froakie also posseses hands identical to Super Mario's white gloves. The name, Froakie, likely derives from a combination of frog, froth, and croak. Froakie is translated as ケロマツor Keromatsu in Japanese. Keromatsu is a combination of kerokero (onomatopoeia for a frog's croaking) and matsu (bubble or foam) or himatsu (spray or splash).

The Legendaries FACT: Xerneas and Yveltal are the only Pokémon to have their English names revealed before their Japanese names. Xerneas: Xerneas is one of the most powerful pokemon in this region, because it's a legendary. There has been no news regarding Xerneas's type, or number yet. Xerneas is a deer-like pokemon, sporting eight colorful antlers, a fluffy black tail, and black and blue (with streaks of white) body. Xerneas is meant to look like the letter, "X" but, doesn't even look a smidgen close to the letter, "X". Xerneas in Japanese is ゼルネアス. This name may be acquired from ervus (Latin for deer), Cernunnos (horned Celtic god), and Ceryneian Hind.

Yveltal: Yveltal is Xerneas's counterpart in this region, and is in comparison to that of a hawk. This hawk is red, with streaks of black on its wings, and a grey, fluffy fur flowing off of its neck. Yveltal gives off the most intimidating impression of all pokemon announced thus far, due to its fiery eyes and sharp claws. Yveltal represents the letter, "Y" and actually looks like one, but is also based on some kind of avian. The Pokemon's name is translated as イベルタル in Japanese. It may also be derived from yvel (a Middle English spelling of evil) and quetzal. (Quetzal is the national bird of Guatemala: rare and possibly endangered)

So, give me your opinion.. Is Pokemon going a generation too far, or is it completely appropriate for another generation to arise?

By the way I disagree with this article. I think pokemon still looks fine and the gameplay is amazing and addicting. Easily my favorite JRPG games and some of my favorite games of all time. In fact Black/White has been my favorite since Crystal so I actually think they are improving.

I cant wait for X/Y

lol. Pokemon has many more than one generation in its future, I promise you that.

Pokemon Gen VI be the most impressive, i bet they'll make it have a new experience! Cant Wait!!!

I lost track of everything after gen 1. Hundreds of new pokemon I've never even seen before... Might have to get a 3DS one day just for that. I know the games are fun, and moderately interested.. But, not going to get a system for one single game.

If we did'nt see a new generation on 3DS, ppl would complain about it and demand one. This is what ppl need to get into their head before critisizing.

This reminds me of some of the really annoying things I hear people in real life say about this.

"Why make it on the 3DS?"

^--- implying they should have stuck with the DS

"They only made this game to sell the 3DS"

^--- implying that the only reason to make the game is to sell the console. No, sales of the software are also really important and would most likely not have sold as much as they would have keeping it on the DS

"It would have sold more if they kept it on the DS because most people who bought a DS still have one.  I can think of more people who have a DS than a 3DS."

^--- Super annoying statement.  It ignores a LOT about how these things work and completely ignores the fact that there are a lot of technical limitations when they keep it on an inferior system.  One big aspect is the online one, and another big one is its capability for improving graphics and general computing (more eventful scenes, battles, etc.)

I quit caring about catching them all after Gen 1, having so many promo pokemon etc. Which was a really fun aspect of the Gen 1 and even Gen 2

I've always wanted them to limit the amount of pokemon refine the backgrounds, animations, and sounds which have always been dated when they released said generation.

However, they'd be idiotic to quit making them. And seeing new Pokemon is always fun.

From a business point of view. It would be utterly retarded NOT to release a new generation of Pokemon on 3DS.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

There will always be new players of pokemon. I remember 5 years ago at school everybody had a ds with pokemon. I think this will happen again and again. The formula of pokemon is after all one of the best, EVER. I just think that they should make a console version were the battles are like in the anime, to get the series to be a bit more innovative.
