Forums - Sony - What Sony needs to do to endear people to their first person shooters

Seems like you put some thought into this. I only started playing console multiplayer this generation with MW2. So i see the points you made are valid. I quite enjoyed both the single player campaigns of Black Ops 2 and Halo 4 also. So i generally agree.

My limited time with Battlefield 3 multiplayer on console (haven't played pc version) wasn't all that great. The scope is too big for my liking. Perhaps i would enjoy the choppers and jets were bit easy to get into.

So i generally like Halo/COD kind of FPS for multiplayer. Integrating solid voice chat would certainly help. It is bad by no means but one has to strive for better.

I can't argue that, but COD is still fun and competitive on the PS3. I wish I had bought it on the 360 but it was sold out. The online is just as healthy.

The online is just as healthy.. yes I agree. But the comunication is lacking and the skill of the average player is.. how would I put this.. in easy mode as compared to XBL.

The Xbox 360 might be the place to be to play these games, but really pertaining to this discussion thats neither here nor there. I've seen players on the PS3 that have trapped and and killed me in ways I've never experienced on the 360 and vice versa. They both have sold well enough to support a large variety of play types and aptitudes. Selling 20 M+ per year on both consoles is a telling story. Many gamers have made the switch since its become knowledge that COD is playable for free on PSN. Sony could just as easily change their public perception dealing with shooters and in particular the COD franchise, they just need to start off on the right foot.

I totally agree and your last sentence is the persistance most demand from Sony when it comes to this genre that seems fall out of their grasp so easily when some proper analyzing could definitely help their cause.

Battlefield is quite accessible, but yes if you dont master the vehicles and combat style of that game you can either get burned out or get killed quite easily. It takes more dedication.

The whole skills thing is such a silly perception. You get that because lot of youtube gaming celebs game on 360. There skill is good but the people they are playing against getting those 35/0 just seem horrible. Yet i don't go around saying one has less skill than the other.

Some just don't get it anymore, but the sales show that the superior days of the Xbox 360's sales dominating shooters are over. Sony has an audience ready to buy those types of games but just aren't pushing them to that group of people. They are there because COD sells between 10-12 million on the PS3 alone.

i have no idea who you played against on PSN, but i've got a crew that constantly handles Xbox and PSN ass with PSN being our worst KD yet still positive.

i've never lost a GEARS, or COD match on 360, and only 4 matches in Halo, but have lost plenty of COD and KZ matches on PS3 with my KD lacking by 1k on KZ2.

it's like 2165/3K something, and that's mainly cause of the pistol. i stoped playing when gliching picked up.

Crap you sound like you'll do some damage. What did you think of the post? Is there anything I should add?

man the only person that has ever equaled me is my brother, which is why we don't play against eachother anymore. i had to stop playing shoorters because i can't track the movement anymore. there was a point in time you couldn't sneak up on me. anyway those days are gone.

1. Games are intergrated into the community: I hate to use this but people are willing to pay for Xbox Live just to play Halo COD and Gears and it speaks to how compelling its hold is on the community. Party chat bolsters the teamwork aspect two fold (but I will talk about that later).

isn't this what you have mic's for? i don't need cross game chat for team work, i've got a headset for that. Turtle beach anyone? no i don't have, but it's like intergrated in my head.

2. Well made maps maps balance well open spaces, levels, bases, sniping points and choke points: (well placed cooridors or constricting paths for those who don't understand what a choke point is). Games like COD and Halo in most cases keep the maps varied between small at tight points that encourage high kill/death ratios and have a shorter learning curve so gamers can quickly become immsersed in the action, but mastery is left solely up to your aptitude.

On the PS3 with MAG and now with Dust 514, the maps are unnecessarily large. Battlefield has mastered how to make this type of action work without holding back the gameplay, because of their air/land/sea style combat. If you look at their sales you can see the formula still works.

i couldn't agree more but Halo nor does any other shoorter does it well enough. no matter the shooter you're still a sitting duck.

3. Quicker action that works well with the controller you're playing (yes, subjective but makes ense.). Nothing is more infuriating than a slow and clunky shooter. Create a balanced controller for the PS4 that can work well with shooters, fighters, racer and action games without hindering each other. Those are the main genres to master.

lol i move at an angle before hitting corners, so i don't really turn when playing shooters, and i'm already aiming for a head shot.

4. A compelling lore with compelling characters: Halo has a great lore that spans numerous books and has an extremely loyal following. COD, not so much but Black Ops 2 had a great story that inspires at least two playthroughs. Creating a large and expansive world in the lore can inspire generations of games if the game is successful.

this is war. i've got nothing for this one. i never gave to much thought to it. but it's war, not budy budy time.

5. Character customization: On the Xbox 360 you'll notice a good amount of customization in Halo. Being able to play the game and gain parts or customize the controller to

weapon customization is more important.

6. Mulitplayer Perks: Give players incentive and buffs to give the players an edge in their style of play. Gaining more perks increases replay value. In COD you can have many styles of play and perks which include extra weapons, gameplay and buffs.

doesn't KZ have classes for that? depends on how well the work for the way you play the class

7. Rank: No...I am not talking about rank based on your  overall score giving you pull in MAG (which wasn't even properly utilized because most gamers didnt even have a mic). I am talking about rank and medals based on your achievements and level of play. Congratulate gamers for their dedication.

KZ2 has that.

8. Compelling DLC: Give consumers a reason to buy DLC. Make the maps provide some sort of varied challenge based on level design while still making the maps accessible. Marketing this should be easy and make consumers want to try their luck against the competition.

never bought DLC

9. Mics/ Party Chat/Cross Chat: Please prepare the PS4 for battle because THIS IS WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT WHEN THEY WANT TO GAME WITH THEIR FRIENDS. They want full acessibility choices pertaining to their friends when they game or are just watching a movie. We know the PS4 will have this, but I just had to add it. Mics must be accessible straight out of the box when gamers get their PS4.

i remeber doing this with PSeye

10. Talents unique to a character or class from the start of the game with evolutionary or changeable traits: There are many players out there let them choose. In single player teach them how to control a unique character that is going to take on his or hers universe. Perks or talents in the game change the way gamers see YOUR GAME from the other games, thus making it lack generic appearance. The risk is worth it if you want to gain appeal and it meshes with the core gameplay.

every shooter needs to do this better.

11. More vehincles (recently added): Give players a chance to have fun even if they aren't great. So what if they get shot off of their bike! Give them a fighting chance against veterans.

Starhawk

LOL@Marcus Turtle beach integrated in head.

Randomly going over some points:

Lore is very important. Went to Halo 4 midnight launch with a friend and most if not all the people were talking about the story and universe. They'd spend only 6-10 hours in campaign but it was more important and for most players the first thing they experience when they put the disc in. Games are even adding story to secondary components like Spec Ops in Modern Warfare and Zombies stuff in Treyarch games. The dialogue was hilarious in Black Ops 1 zombies. Haven't played much in 2.

Maps: Good maps design can enhance the mutliplayer experience so much. Ask the people who are still playing Dust in Counterstrike. Can't comment much on others as i mostly play COD but the map design in MW1 and 2 was great. Those ex infinity ward people knew how to craft something fun. BO1 did some interesting map design too but snipers complained (am not one).
MW3 - The worst map design other than few maps. Aesthetically ugly. There is piles of rubble all over. Yes the world was at war but this won't be the first time. Also add colour. Just all out bland. Somehow i did the best in this game.
Blops2 - Maps are small. I don't have much criticism. Nice use of colour. It adds to the experience when playing.

DLC: Only bought one map pack for MW2. These are not important to me as 6-7 months after these show up there is a new game for same price as map packs. They are important to keep people playing and moving to other games.
COD/Halo/Battlefield all boast some amazing DLC sales.

Also friend was pretty exited about TwitchTv/Youtube integration built directly into Black Ops 2. Not a big deal for me but there are customers who appreciate it. I guess these are just going to increase with time. I rather have the option to turn of tweets and facebooks about what game i am playing and such.
